While I was doing my field research I learned that being mindful is being aware and attentive to what is going on in your head and what is going on with your surroundings. According to the American Psychological Association, mindfulness is reducing stress, improving your focus skills and improving relationships. As I had that definition in my head, and during my observations, I noticed that a good amount of students would sit outside in the common and just simply enjoy what is going on around them. Many of them would be laying down, doing yoga, or eating. As I was walking around and taking notes down, I saw a friend and decided to ask him about what being mindful is. Multitasking is a growing trend in today’s busy world. People seem to be constantly doing many things at a time and enjoy doing so. Walk down any street here in Boston and you can observe people multitasking everywhere. People are on social media while walking, posting while eating and even texting and driving. Dzubak describes multitasking as an “individual’s engagement in discrete tasks that are performed in succession” (Dzubak, 2007). Multitasking allows people to experience more than one thing at a time and according to Dzubak and the studies she performed on the pros and cons of multitasking, the more you do it the better you become at it (Dzubak, 2007, pg. 8). Dzubak does explain though that even though you get better at doing more than one thing at a time, tests and studies done using MRIs show that different parts of the brain are used when multitasking as compared with focus on a single activity and that this is because multitasking often involves repetitive behaviors.
