Being laid off is not the same as being fired because it is not considered to be fault of the employee. It is actually the fault of the employer. A lay off is often called as “reduction in force”. Whether it is being laid off or being fired, to be without a job may be one of the hardest times of your life. Losing your job is something that is unexpected and shocking. Now your regular life seems to become different from your professional life. Your self esteem gradually dents. This situation can demotivate you in such a way that you can't even think about your future. If you are not smart enough about your future plans to overcome this phase, it can derail your career.

The straight truth about lay offs: Right now, you might be thinking that the work you have done till now has broken down into pieces. Lay offs are the decision that is often outsourced to fancy expensive consultants. Neither culture nor the loyalty of the long- term employees is considered.
