Sumant Bysani 10/05/17 English 1101 The minimum wage the initial amount most will be paid for their work. Whether or not that is the wage a worker receives is always a huge concern for most people. No one should have to decide between keeping the lights on, clothes on their back, or food on the table. A living wage is the least an employer can provide for their employee. Most people expect to be able to afford to survive and living paycheck to paycheck is not an easy way to survive. However, the minimum wage was never established for people to live on. The ugly truth is many live every as such either the right choices in life were not made, or perhaps school was not a reasonable or affordable option.. There are many number of variables
in life that would force someone to work a job that pays them the absolute minimum the government requires them to pay. This does not devalue employees nor make the company cheap. Unfortunately, the underlying issue is for most employers the only thought is about the bottom line. Paying people, a higher minimum wage increases their operating costs. Costs that can put small business owners, who are the backbone of the economy at risk. Employees who are paid a higher minimum wage are also the most likely to be laid off to help offset the costs of a wage increase. Unfortunately raising the minimum wage also raises other issues. Goods simply do not cost the same as they used too it would be nice if an entire week's’ worth of groceries cost a few nickels like back in the day. No longer the case anymore due to people's demand for more money. It is a double edged sword either an increase in cost of goods or worse employers start to lay off employees. Employees who may be perfectly satisfied with the wages they are receiving whether or not it is minimum. Leading to a decrease in staff that could result in shoddy service. Putting businesses in even more trouble with unhappy consumers. Possibly leading to the shutdown of the business that would put even more stress on an already strained economy. While it is true that inflation caused by other economic factors put a strain on the working class, another issue causing the inflating costs of goods and services is people’s desire for more money. At first it may seem the wage increase is like a godsend and people are able to live in a less stressful situation. No more living paycheck to paycheck and hopefully able to put aside a little nest egg to be able to save for future issues. Until they need to start cracking that egg open to help pay bills or buy groceries, It is a never ending cycle if people want to make more money to support their families they need to make themselves more valuable to the company as an asset not just another replaceable pawn that will be sacrificed to save the king( The company). They need to prove to their employers that they are a much more valuable piece. Someone that is useful and can be utilized fully not to be thrown away to make room for the next wave of happy employees who would do anything for the job. If that is not an option and they cannot prove how valuable they are to that king. They need to move on to a different board. While the job market may not be the most stable thing at the time. Decisions need to be made and need to be a few moves ahead. The employee needs to become the chess master, not just another piece on the board, destined to be thrown away the moment there are any signs of distress. They have to become the more important pieces instead of trying to make everyone important and devaluing themselves in the process starting the game all over again.
Because the education system does not relate classwork or homework to the lives of students, they do not see how writing essays or solving math problems can help them in everyday life. “By the time Roadville children reach high school they write off school as having nothing to do with what they want in life, and they fear that school success will threaten their social relations with people whose company they value. This is a familiar refrain for working class children” (Attitude 119). As students begin to realize how low their potential is within school, they chose to cut school out of their life and start working. These students do not understand how they can benefit from what they are learning. “One woman talks of the importance of a ‘fitting education’ for her three children so they can ‘do better’, but looks on equanimity as her sixteen-year-old son quits school, goes to work in a garage, and plans to marry his fifteen-year-old girlfriend ‘soon’” (Attitude 118). Students are settling for less than what they can actually achieve to have, just because they see no purpose of being in school, and believe they can do better without the help of the education system. Even parents are not actually supporting and encouraging their child to stay in school. “Although Roadville parents talk about the value of school, they often act as if they don’t believe it”
Understanding the basic concept of minimum wage is important for every single individual. We all live in this world together and it is obvious that there is an order. In order to continue our lives and afford our basic needs, we all need to work and gain wealth. As the old adage says ‘‘There ain’t a such a thing as a free lunch.’’ We need to give up on something that we like to get something else that we like. That’s why, every single individual in the society face trade-offs. However, people have different status. Some people work as employees and some work as employers. In that case of minimum wage the trade off is between employees and employers. Employees work for employers in order to gain money and afford their minimal living expenses whereas employers give up on their money and pay for employees because employers take care of their need of labor. Employers pay for their workers who we call employees and employees gain hourly money. The calculated minimum money that they gain in an hour base called minimum wages. Besides, there is this cycle that everyone actually works

The living wage movement is an economic reform movement that has become one of the most important public policy issues that has come up within the last 10 years. Although there is no single definition, it is often defined as an hourly salary that allows working families of four to have an income that is above the federal poverty line. This means that the livable wage laws often stipulate that hourly wages should be two to three times above the federal Mininum wage. However, unlike the Mininum wage, the living wage has so far only been enacted on the county and city level. Cities and counties enforce the living wage for companies that have contracts with their respective cities and counties, receive subsidies from their cities or counties, other economic benefits cities and counties provide to companies, and in some cases a livable wage is required for the tourist areas of the particular city. For cities and local governments, the livable wage is perceived as a measure to increase the welfare of the poor. However, like everything in life the livable wage creates its on costs that along with its benefits of increased wage to some low income earners.
In recent years the minimum wage has been a heated topic. People want to hike it up to 15 dollars an hour which they call a living wage, while others just want to keep it the same. There are also others that suggest to bring the minimum wage to around $10.78 an hour, which should be around the minimum wage now if we account for inflation from the 1960’s. I agree with that to a certain point. We as a nation need to bring up the minimum wage only up to ten dollars so that less people are living in poverty, and not any higher so that states with smaller economies don 't crash and burn.

The minimum wage being too low has been a public issue in America for generations. Basically, the debate includes two different opinions. Firstly, people who want to raise the minimum wage, and second, people who would rather is stay the same. The overwhelming majority of liberals are on the side that favors a raise. Additionally, a somewhat smaller proportion of conservatives favor the change as well, but for different reasons. The liberal opinion on raising the minimum wage is based on the idea that putting more money in the people’s pockets, will stimulate the economy, and decrease poverty. The problem that conservatives and liberals alike have with this, is that a few direct consequences are proven to apply when raising wages. Some proposed consequences include unemployment, inflation, and unfairness to higher educated people. Another main point is that raising the minimum wage is thought to helps small business by increasing worker satisfaction. This issue of minimum wage has become increasingly popular and important in current times, as president Obama has proposed the idea of raising the minimum wage of contract workers to 10.10$ per hour (about a 30% increase from the current 7.25$ per hour minimum wage). A large number of people consider this wage hike unnecessary due to the fact that today’s value of minimum is higher than it has ever been since the 80’s, and because the wage hike comes at too high of a cost. All things considered, the issue of raising minimum wage is not a battle of political parties and their agendas, its really a debate between everyone.
The living wage is more and more being called a movement because the current federal minimum wage laws does not provide enough money for an individual that works a full time job to be able to support a family. Making them feel like they should not have to raise a family in poverty. Across the United States there are efforts to provide what is called living wages for workers which began with requiring all employers to pay at least the minimum wage to its workers that is equal to the living wage for the area (City/State) they are working in. The current minimum wage is set, depending on where you are living it can be up to several dollars short of what should be the living wage. The “Fair” Work Commission has ruled that over six hundred and fifty thousand Australians working in retail and hospitality, would have their penalty rates diminished at the government's decisions to scrap weekend penalty rates. Unfortunately for some workers, they are amongst the lowest paid in the country and as a result of, Sundays and public holidays, essentially a day for Australians to “rest”, will have workers on those days being paid less. Many Australians will become disheartened by this decision as Australia swears to have a proud nation of democracy and many of our workers who already are enduring assiduous physical work at a very low pay already will have their pay slashed even further.
: I think the income for the different demographic groups will increase or decrease depending on the economy. Ultimately, one’s primary source of income is from a form of employment. If the economy is in a neutral or growing state, chances are employment can increase and therefore will provide a better income for some. I do believe that earlier this week, it was mentioned that the minimum wage in California will increase to $15, so those working minimum wage will be earning more, yet we shall wait and see if prices for goods and services will be increasing too.
The commentators kick off the debate by asking the candidates about the minimum wage and taxes. Donald Trump answers this question with declaring that he would not raise the minimum wage because it would mean having to raise taxes, likewise it would not allow the United States compete with other countries. Ben Carson answers this question however with stated that he would like to make the minimum wage lower, but only for younger people, like teenagers so that they can get working experience in order to become more successful in life. However the commentators ask Carson if he would raise is and he like Trump states no. Rubio answers the question by stating that he would also not raise minimum wage, but rather try to bring jobs and industry
For the past three decades minimum wage has been seen to rise several times. Only helping some but more than anything harming most. So who are the ones feeling the effects? Certainly not the wealthy, it never is them, mainly it would be the working poor, unskilled and teenagers. Raising minimum wage would cripple the public even more than what it would actually help.
