Being an independent learner can be challenging for many college students today. Many people feel as if they always have to rely on the professor to teach them. However, others feel as if they are able to use resources to help learn if they feel as if they need more assistance. Being an independent learner is important because it relies on being self motivated, being responsible, and having time management. Motivation is also the key to being a successful independent learner. I learned that being motivated to learn has made me feel better about teaching myself the concept. Being motivated is not having someone else to force you to complete a task. For example, I took my own notes to study for my exam, and after I took my first exam in Pre-Calculus I received an B on the test. I am now motivated to make an higher grade on the next exam. Motivation and being an independent learner relates to each other. Along with being self motivated, you also have to be responsible. Having responsibilities are important for being an independent learner. Since I am now in college, I have to know how to complete tasks for myself. It is critical for me to take responsibility for my own work and making sure we complete them on time for my professor. For example, I am constantly doing what I have to meet all the requirements my professors …show more content…
Managing our time helps us to be less stressed about having to complete a lot of assignments. Time management is something I am getting better at. For example, I am getting all of my assignments out of the way so I can use my time wisely for other tasks. In addition, I keep an agenda book to keep a log of my assignments, and I have a calendar to keep track of due dates of my assignments and other events. It is important to manage your time to be an independent learner so you have time to relax. If I want to succeed throughout the semester I have to have time
Using time wisely is very important because the assignment and the teachers and your grades.Sometimes kids would want to horse play and they will never work on there stuff which makes them have a low grade and that causes them to fail that class. There are classes that have shortage of time or the teachers take to long on the same topic and never get to the project. At times there is a few people that have an attitude and that makes the class hold back because of the teacher has to talk to him or her.
Time management is about using one’s time to work productively. Education is about learning and one learns something new everyday. Putting time and effort in learning improves the way one’s educational
Willed learners need to be empowered from their own passion, and they need to have a substantial voice in their learning, which generates self-determination to succeed when their voice is truly heard. They learn by their choices, for them it is to lead, and not to be led by others. It generates trust, love, kindness and respect when a learner can express how they want to learn, and they are not prevented from learning in the manner they selected, but supported with trust, respect, love, caring, and kindness. It is personal learning, which is something instilled, willed by us, not a personalized learning which is selected for us. The responsibility of how one learns is largely their choice of how to learn, with assistance. The will to learn like young children wants to walk, talk, eat, or dress on their own. It is self-determination to succeed, and it is the self-determination within us, which drives us forward with our own interests.
For example, organizing my calendar where I have the time blocked out when I am in class, driving, the hours I will be studying, the time that I will spend getting Avery ready for bed and her school work done, etc. by having this all planned out in such detail maybe this will help me stay on track for efficient time management. Also, logging my time and keeping track of where I spend my time can also help me see where I can spend more time doing something more productive. (Chapman,2008) Setting priorities and learning to focus not only what is urgent and important but also activities that are important but might not be urgent, like Avery’s gymnastics or her 4H club meetings. Making a “to do list” would be helpful in helping me remember what needs to be done and what I would like to get done and finding time in my organized calendar to do so. (Chapman, 2008) Also, I should try to avoid multi- tasking, I am a mother which means I am a great multi tasker, I can cook dinner, do laundry, and give a bath all at the same time, although sometime the dinner gets a little burnt. But according to Chapman, multi-tasking is actually not a time saver but rather you lose time when you switch to different tasks. Trying to stick to one task at a time may be helpful in learning more effective time management skills. All of
Motivation comes in all different forms, and it depends on how a person perceives it. Motivation can be anything, and affects each person differently. A person can have multiple ways of inspiration that encourage them to succeed. A person has to be at the right place in the right time, and it’s just a matter of finding it.
“Motivation is the process whereby goal-orientated activity is instigated and sustained” (Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2008. As cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010, p.284). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)
I would say that I am a self-motivated learner. I enjoy learning that is one of the reasons why I enjoy my work and career so much because I learn something new every day. Grades and praise are important, but they do not drive me in my learning. I am more compelled to my own personal achievement i.e. by understanding for myself what I am learning. · Do you push yourself to think deeper about issues and draw connections to your personal, academic, and professional lives?
Managing time reduces stress levels in your mind and body. Setting goals and a timeline to get them done will give you more time to be productive in your tasks. Managing time can cause less barriers in life responsibilities. Not only does time management helps to get more done it also gives you more time to focus on other areas of your life such as nutrition and managing your
Learner’s self-concept: The second principle self-concept of the learner relates to autonomy and self-directedness of the
Self-concept of the learner- Adult learners are naturally self- directed which means they will take ownership of what and how to learn and how to manage their time and learning.
Self-directed or independent learning is a strategy which focuses on giving responsibility for students in their own learning. McInerney et al. (2015) state that this strategy is likely well-suited to teach adult learners since adults are autonomous learners. The example of applying this strategy in learning is by giving a project to students that lasts over several days and this is largely unsupervised. This is often employed by university lecturers when they give assignments to their students.
In conclusion, There are many things you will need to change and learn about yourself to be a success in college and taking accountability for all that happens while in college, will teach you growth and maturity. Relying on these positive techniques will allow you to accomplish not only being a great student but giving you the tools and exposure to be the best employee after obtaining your dream degree. I believe that most students may be successful in college and that the measure of handwork, devotion, and dedication are the features that divides the students who are effective from the students who are not. We may not all be effective at everything, yet don't work against yourself and at any rate try it out.
One contributing factor towards student success is student motivation. Motivation is reading unassigned books out of class that relate to the class subject matter, just to expand his or her knowledge. The need or want type of actions a persons’ mentality is, to reach a personal goal or objective of some sort. People’s motivational purpose in school can range from, higher earning potential, more job stability, greater benefits, and even just to gain more knowledge. In a YouTube video entitled “The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us” by Dan Pink, he suggests that three elements: purpose, mastery, and autonomy play a part towards true motivation. Autonomy is ones self-drive, while

Motivation is really important tool in a learning environment. Also motivation effects student learning and their behavior as well. It directs behavior towards particular targets. Also it effect the decision which students takes. In motivation mainly we have two types which is intrinsically and extrinsically being motivated. For example: when a student is intrinsically motivated they just do it for themselves not because of the reward that they will get back. It’s just because they have their own interest and they enjoy doing that. On the other side, when a student is extrinsically motivated they just do it for the reward that they will get. That’s why in learning process it’s important that each student should
