Recommended: Motivation theory
Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way according to Google. The three milers in The Perfect Mile attempt to achieve the four-minute mile, and they each have different forms of motivation. There are two milers that achieve success because their motive impelled them to prevail. What is motivation?
Some forms of inspiration are driven from defeat. The Garden City’s football team’s catalyst before their football game was, “Having lost to the rival Red Devils in each of the past two seasons was motivation enough for Garden City, Which rolled to a 68-20 victory that ended by the 45-point mercy rule late in the fourth quarter”(Whitson 1). Having lost two seasons in a row by the same team, caused each player to exert themselves to their highest capability to vanquish the Red Devils. The Lubbock tennis team, just like Garden City, was defeated, but the Lubbock tennis team lost at regional finals. “’Last year we fell short and lost in the finals of the regionals to Wichita Falls Rider, and basically we started working for this very thing at that point last year,’ Dotson said”(“Finding Motivation No Problem” 1). Their melancholy was used as fuel to ignite triumph that upcoming year. In the book The Perfect Mile, Bannister embraced this concept when Neal Bascomb said, “Bannister had stepped up his training. His failure in Helsinki had left him with a need to redeem himself- to deal with ‘unfinished business’”(Bascomb 88). “But the sting from his devastating loss at the Olympics had driven him to continue running and to seek the four-minute mile as evidence that his approach to sport still had merit”(Bascomb 242). Bannister desired to have satisfaction with his achievements and wanted to close o...

...he could prove himself worthy of breaking the four-minute mile barrier. Anger benefited in Santee’s case and Shanahan’s life. “There was no score when Tkachuk, only 22 at the time, caught Shanahan with a high-stick, opening his lip. ‘It was an accident, but I know he was (ticked) off,’ Tkachuk said recently. The first (goal), I shot it and it deflected off a couple of their defensemen and went in”(Rutherford 2-3). Shanahan’s anger facilitated his team to win the game because he expressed his anger by being competitive and aggressive on the ice.
Motivation comes in all different forms, and it depends on how a person perceives it. Motivation can be anything, and affects each person differently. A person can have multiple ways of inspiration that encourage them to succeed. A person has to be at the right place in the right time, and it’s just a matter of finding it.
This theme is very present in the book throughout the whole story but none other than the final race in Berlin. The race itself was not looking up for the boys with race odds getting worse and worse and the race continued. They had the worse lane, the boys were feeling extreme pain in their bodies, they got off to an extremely late start, and Don Hume was in terrible racing conditions and dozing off in the boat. All hope seemed lost for the boys but instead of throwing in the towel and giving up but they persevered and grinded out the rest of the race. With nobody giving up and nothing mattered to them but getting that gold rowing medal. With this determination the team won gold by the slimmest of margins but if they gave up earlier in the race they would have had shame on them plus the fact that their determination was for nothing. This idea can be applied in real life with the fact that everyone has to go through hardships and overcome some of the toughest challenges have to be after a person’s hardest drawbacks. However, this lesson can give us insight of how to survive these
motivation is a behavior that makes people want to struggle all the time until he or she achieved the things that they all wanted. motivation can be divided into two ways, intrinsic and extrinsic. the intrinsic one usually comes from his or her desire and this method is really proven that it can possibly achieved if this intrinsic method is used because we do not need to rely on people around like friends mostly. the extrinsic one is the reversal from the intrinsic that we rely on the people who taught us to be motivated and this method quite or often proven or succeed because human also need a help each other.
This paper explores the factors involved in success in the teaching field regardless of the environment. The information is based on the interview of current teacher Jane Satrom and her experience with a variety of adversities as a long time educator such as attending professional learning community (PLC) and department planning period (DPP) meetings. Her responses to various questions are compared to written advice for success in the college textbook Peak Performance: Success in College and Beyond in order to verify which skills and strategies are necessary in order to succeed. Major themes discussed are self-control, motivation, time management, and goal setting as used to succeed in the classroom. There are varying perspectives in the definition
What is motivation? According to text, motivation is defined as a set of factors that activate, direct, and maintain behavior, usually toward a certain goal. Motivation is the energy that makes us do things: this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied so that we have inspiration to complete the mission. These needs vary from person to person as everybody has their individual needs to motivate themselves. Depending on how motivated we are, it may further determine the effort we put into our work and therefore increase the standard of the productivity. There have been a wide variety of theories about motivation developed over the years. Several are drive-reduction theory, arousal theory, psychosocial (both incentive and cognitive) theory, and Maslow’s H...
What is motivation to you? Motivation to me is the process by which one is moved, whether the process is external or internal. It encourages one to do something they fear or achieve something good. It can bring about positive change or a negative reaction depending on the situation. The intouchables movie has many great examples of motivation. In this film Philippe is an extremely wealthy man who, after a paragliding accident became a quadriplegic. As as quadriplegic Philippe needed an around the clock caretaker to look after him, ironically out of all the men, he employs a poor man named Driss, who just got out of jail. Driss initially had no intention of being hired, and had applied for the job simply to be eligible for unemployment benefit. One could say that Driss was a selfish human being for only going to
Motivation is defined as the process that guides, initiates, and maintains goal orientated behavior and thought (Cherry, 2013). Motivation is what drives individuals to do what they do, whether it is something as simple as getting a drink because he or she are thirsty or something as big as getting up every day and gong to work for a paycheck.
According to Greenberg (1999) motivation is defined "as a process of arousing, directing and maintaining behaviour towards a goal." Where directing' refers to the selection of a particular behaviour; and maintenance' refers to the inclination to behave with consistency in that manner until the desired outcome is met.
Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviours. Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. Goal Setting is where we set specific targets aims that we wish to achieve, they need to be S.M.A.R.T or else they become dreams rather than believable goals. .
come from bodily capacity, but from the will of the soul" The motivation is indispensable to carry out what we want to achieve. Motivation is that driving force that comes from within and helps us to overcome the obstacles that we can find, to overcome us in our task and to achieve, with success, that which we have set ourselves to achieve. If we are motivating someone, be aware of this type of commitment.
There are many different ways of interpretation of the concept of motivation. To define motivation in general I relied on Oxford Dictionary (2017): “A reason or
According to Greenberg (1999), motivation is defined “as a process of arousing, directing and maintaining behavior towards a goal.” Where “directing” refers to the selection of a particular behavior; and ‘maintenance” refers to the inclination to behave with consistency in that manner until the desired outcome is met.
Every race has a finish line. In all activities in life, there is always the eventual finish line. More and more as I drew closer to finalizing this book, I found myself imagining I was entering the final straightaway of the greatest race of my life. Not more than a hundred meters in front of me was the finish line. I could see it and I could feel it. But as I had previously learned, one thing was always certain about a race. Crossing that finish line would either create a joyous conclusion to hours of hard work and dedication or, produce what can seem to be another inexhaustible flood of disappointment. However, I also knew that even if it became yet another wave of disillusionment, the frustration will soon be replaced by the birth of another strategy aimed at achieving success. It’s what made my running experience the never-ending voyage of hope that it was and what continually reminded me that in life, “Success is never permanent and
¡§Motivation¡¨ derives from the Latin verb ¡§movere¡¨ which means ¡§to move¡¨. Beck (2004, p.3) defined Motivation as an internal state which is the driving force that activates behaviour or gives directions to thoughts, feelings and actions of an organism.
Motivation is best defined as the needs, wants, and beliefs that drive an individual. It is the basis of what people work for and keeps them doing things they otherwise would never do. People act in a whole new manner when they are motivated by something. Motivation gives them a whole new perception of the task at hand. Motivation is not always positive though, and it does not always just come from one place, for example, your boss. Motivation can be negative by not receiving something, and contrary to popular belief it is not always money that motivates people to do what they do. People have different needs, wants, and desires and the finding what is most important to those individuals is the key to motivation. People and companies have used countless techniques and approaches to motivate others and employees, but what works for one person does not necessarily work for the other.
All humans wish to achieve greatness in life. Greatness varies from person to person and the thought of how one will reach success is what sets us all apart. The person with the most drive and willpower has the best odds. To look past the inevitable hard work and to look at the possible result is what it will take to keep one on task. The people who look at and fear the labor and hardship are those who will fail. Success is never guaranteed to the hard worker, but failure always looms and drags down the weak-spirited. The only person to blame for one’s failure is him or herself. People must accept responsibility and initiative to seek out success and take control of their future. They must find their muse along with willpower to reach the places they want to see themselves. Love for their work will carry them on the good days; willpower will carry them through their work on the rough days. The willpower one possesses will prove to be the most valuable asset to reach any and all goals he or she has set.
