A pet groomer needs many skills and they have to love being around most animals. Becoming a pet caretaker is a mission unto itself because it has many requirements in educational preparation, personal qualities as well as in the daily expectations for this career.
In 3000 B.C. Egyptians kept cats well groomed because they were seen as religious, household pets and felt it unhealthy to keep them outside. People with farms kept their animals healthy and well groomed to show at county fairs and showing contests. The American Humane Association founded in 1916 worked with animals used in the war effort to heal them (Encyclopedia).
Pet groomers mainly work with dogs and cats maintaining the animal’s appearance, but they can receive any type of animal. They usually work in shelters, pet stores, shops and kennels, bathing and grooming small pets. They are either working alone or in groups of two to three people. They can also work by cleaning out the pens for animals (Occupational,Missouri).
Becoming a pet groomer requires at least a high school diploma or equivalent. They typically work under another pet groomer. Pet Groomer Certifications can help the pet groomer enhance their skills. Attending schools with grooming programs is also a way skills can be increased. Pet groomers can also learn by working under the guidance of an experienced pet groomer ( Study, Occupational).
The skills you need to become a pet groomer are high standards of cleanliness and good customer service. You must be prepared for any pet and have the patience for customers and animals. You also have to be able to treat the pets with care and kindness. Knowing all kinds of breeds and the traits of those breeds of animals is also a skill needed to be a pet
