Dog grooming is an essential part of dog ownership. All dogs need grooming but different breeds have different grooming requirements. Some dogs are considered as high maintenance breeds while other breeds would require the least grooming to keep healthy and to have an impressive appearance. With the attachment pets form with their owners, you would think that grooming them would not be a problem but some of these pets would put up a good struggle. It is therefore necessary to accustom the dog to grooming routines early on.

Regular brushing, trimming and stripping are the basic routines for grooming the dog's coat. Stripping is a coat grooming method done about twice a year on wiry coated breeds like most breeds of terriers, Dachshunds and Schnauzers. Dog breeds with wiry coats have two types of hair - a downy under coat and a coarse top coat. This top coat will be thick, well pigmented and strongly rooted to the dog's skin. This healthy hair follicle will soon become weaker, become thinner and weakly rooted at the end of its life span.

Stripping is necessary to remove the dead hair root. If the hair is trimmed the dying root will not be removed and this will certainly mar the appearance and the condition of the coat. This coat grooming procedure is also done by hand or by processes known as rolling or carding. Hand stripping is a tedious and time consuming job. Stripping a small dog would take several hours. The process can be speed up by using a stripping knife as it would enable the groomer to have a good grip on the coat thereby removing more hair with every stroke.
