North East Portland’s Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood is a Charmer
The Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood of North East Portland is one of the gems of Portland’s eastside. The neighborhood includes the popular Beaumont Village shopping and restaurant district, Beaumont Middle School, and the Alameda Ridge, with its views of downtown Portland and the Cascade mountain range. Beaumont-Wilshire is bordered by the Grant Park, Cully, Rose City Park, Concordia, and Alameda neighborhoods.
The Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood is one of Portland’s older, more-established areas with a both a strong sense of history and a strong sense of community. Originally meant to be a part of the neighboring Rose City Park subdivision. Originally part of a land claim assigned to early Portland resident Joseph Backenstos widow by President Andrew Johnson in the years following the U.S. Civil War. The streets were laid out and paved over the course of a few years between 1911 and 1915.
Prior to the development of the area Beaumont was referred to as the Crook Tract by early settlers. Beaumont, which translates from the French as “beautiful hill” was selected to describe the Alameda ridge that serves as the neighborhood’s chief geographical feature. Today, the ridge contains some of Portland’s most expensive properties, boasting views of the Willamette River, downtown Portland, and the nearby volcanoes of the Cascade mountain
In the early nineteenth century, Boston increased in size by filling in the marshy area around where Washington Street is today. The city, concerned about crowding in the already established neighborhoods downtown and on Beacon Hill, decided to develop this area into new residential neighborhoods. The population of Boston had increased dramatically in the first half of the nineteenth century from the large number of immigrants and the steady rise of industry in a port city. Between 1850 and 1875, the area south and east of Washington Street (the ocean side) became the South End, which was intended to attract the growing middle class and to persuade them not to move to the suburbs. The pattern and plan of the South End are the main contributors to its architectural unity and also what sets it apart as its own distinct neighborhood. The choices in materiality and organization of space give the South End a visual coherence unlike any other neighborhood in Boston. It is one of the largest remaining Victorian residential neighborhoods in the United States.
Denison, Texas has been called “Katy’s Baby,” the “Gateway City,” and the “Infant wonder” (“History of Denison”). Every name mentioned is an accurate description of the ever changing Main Street in Denison, Texas. Main Street has adapted to modifications for well over 100 years. Main Street has transformed, developed, faded and reinvented itself, all while maintaining vastly needed improvements. Denison’s Main Street is known for numerous historical events from the past, present and hopefully the future.

There are many examples of cities reforming itself over time, one significant example is Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. More than a hundred years after the discovery of gold that drew thousands of migrants to Vancouver, the city has changed a lot, and so does one of its oldest community: Downtown Eastside. Began as a small town for workers that migrants frequently, after these workers moved away with all the money they have made, Downtown Eastside faced many hardships and changes. As a city, Vancouver gave much support to improve the area’s living quality and economics, known as a process called gentrification. But is this process really benefiting everyone living in Downtown Eastside? The answer is no. Gentrification towards DTES(Downtown Eastside) did not benefit the all the inhabitants of the area. Reasons are the new rent price of the area is much higher than before the gentrification, new businesses are not community-minded, and the old culture and lifestyle of the DTES is getting erased by the new residents.
Peanut dust in the air, shells on the ground, country music blaring overhead, and workers dancing around, Texas Roadhouse is known not only for its delectably delicious food, but also its friendly environment and excellent customer service. It is a restaurant I would definitely recommend to people of all kinds from those looking for somewhere to hang out with friends to a family looking for somewhere to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion or even two people looking for a place to have a casual second or third date. Texas Roadhouse is a popular restaurant, so our small wait (no more than 15 minutes) was nothing to be disappointed about. We got to enjoy the restaurant’s simple wooded look with a variety of wall décor representing Virginia schools. We also got to participate in their traditional birthday “YEE HAW” celebration twice while waiting.

Downtown has its own kind of stores. Now these stores you won’t find at a mall and only downtown has them. I love exploring each and every one of the stores. On one store they may be selling colorful figurines and a collection of vivid detail blankets and the store next to it may be selling clothes or electronics from blenders to HD televisions. One of the many reasons I like to go into the stores is to glance at the way they’re decorated. It’s just amazing

The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees. There are very few apartments there, unlike where I live now where my entire street is almost all apartment buildings.
