Systemic injustice and obstacles preventing opportunity and equality were heavy during the twentieth century for men and women. While America advocated for liberty, equality, and prosperity both domestically and internationally, many Americans frequently did not experience the fulfillment of these promises. These women faced obstacles to full acceptance in American culture and frequently faced sexism, social isolation, and brutality despite the country's promises of liberty and equality. Men and women of color have also faced difficulties in the American society. Men and women of color faced prejudice as well as economic exploitation. According to America, all Americans were equal and had liberty, equality, and prosperity. This points out how African Americans of both genders are still facing racism and inequalities. Another piece of evidence that shows this is Fannie Lou Hamers's testimony at the Democratic National Convention in 1964. Hamer describes the violent beating she received from law enforcement for her advocacy, among other incidents of racial prejudice and violence. She speaks on the challenges African Americans face in the South, such as being denied the opportunity to vote, not having access to opportunities and basic rights, and being exploited economically. In her speech, she says “The first Negro began to beat, and I was beat by the first Negro until he was exhausted.[a]fter the first Negro had beat until he was exhausted the State Highway Patrolman ordered the second Negro to take the blackjack.” All of this was just because she got off of the bus to see what was happening outside and she was arrested, beaten and verbally beat down. Hamer states, “All of this is on account we want to register, to become a first-class citizen.” She, among millions of other African Americans, just wanted equality and this is what was happening in America to them!
