2.3 Bathtub Model 2.3.1 Introduction Reliability has gained increasing importance in the last few years in manufacturing organisations, the government and civilian communities. With recent concern about government spending, agencies are trying to purchase systems with higher reliability and lower maintenance costs. As customers, we are mainly concerned with buying products that last longer and are cheaper to maintain, i.e., have higher reliability. The reasons for wanting high product or component or system reliability are obvious: • Higher customer satisfaction • Increased sales • Improved safety • Decreased warranty costs • Decreased maintenance costs. 2.3.2 What is reliability? The reliability of a product (or system) can be defined as …show more content…
To carry out production activities you need to use up resources. What are the typical resources used in the production process? Product and process technology is rapidly evolving. Competition is becoming more global. Customers are placing an increasing emphasis on quality and reliability, but at the same time looking for good value. Speed to market is becoming a paradigm of world class manufacturing. To respond to this increasingly dynamic and challenging environment, manufacturers are implementing integrated product development (IPD) concepts to reduce design cycle time and improve product value. Integrated product development is based on the integrated design of products and their manufacturing and support processes. It is a matter of assessing manufacturability, reliability, and supportability of the product after it has been designed and making appropriate changes to the design to enhance these competitive factors. This approach extends the design cycle time, increases product development cost, and may not result in the most optimum way to produce the product. Instead, these factors must be considered from the very start of product development and designed into the product. 3.2.1 Organization and

‘The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis often forms the bedrock of any product planning process. It provides a simple yet effective framework for analysing both internal resources and external trends and competitors’ (Pender, L, 1999: 179)
Because of the recent decline in product quality and problems successfully developing and delivering products, IRSC BAS is in need of a change. This proposal seeks to provide a strategy to align our products and services with our organizational goals based on an analysis of our product offerings. Part of our new strategy involves eliminating obsolete or unprofitable products in order to allow greater opportunities for innovation. The rest of the strategy focuses on remaining customer centered, partly through dedication to producing only technology which the customer truly needs.
Every business has an evolutionary clock speed measuring the rate of change in products, processes and capability. At the core of everything is the organizations ability to design a sustainable supply chain. When this becomes an organizations core competency, they are then positioned to continually win the temporary advantage. By simultaneously working to improve products, process design/creation and supply chains (three dimensional concurrent engineering), a company can drive the “turn of the helix” thus changing the clock speed for the industry.

The business model for IDEO began as an open-minded place to design, develop and manufacture new products. The last 20 years of proven product design driven by innovation has translated into profit margins for their clients and continuous refinement for IDEO’s process. IDEO pioneered “concurrent engineering” where design and engineering work together to produce aesthetically pleasing products that are also highly functional. This was different from many other similar companies that placed more emphasis on the industrial design than the engineering. IDEO’s strengths grew out of the ability to master this ability with high tech clients. Corporations came to IDEO because they had a proven system of developing the best products through using their key ingredients for innovative strategy.
Even the least experienced do-it-yourselfer can build a concrete hot tub. The key is to plan out the size, type and location of the hot tub before purchasing any materials. In addition, learn what materials and steps are necessary to achieve the best result. Often, permits or written permission is required by the city to build concrete hot tubs, so it is vital to make sure that all laws and regulations are being followed before beginning to build.
The process of product design has several steps to having a successful product. There are all different levels of expertise needed to complete the process and concurrent design engineering allows for this to work. Concurrent Design Engineering was defined by Sohlenius as "a way of work where the various engineering activities in the product and production development process are integrated and performed as much as possible in parallel rather than in sequence." Different disciplines within the process are kept informed through the database of any and all changes to the product from start ...

emerging or new market. It can originate from new technology or new market opportunities (Eliashberg, J., Lilien, G. L., & Rao, V. R. 1997). Literature defines product development as exploiting an untapped market opportunity and turning it into a value product for customer satisfaction. Development and introduction of a new product requires extensive research on understanding customer needs, market structure, emerging trends and analysing the internal & external competitive market environments. To evaluate customer satisfaction previous researches provide strong relationship between customer satisfaction and product quality, product features and value for money. ***
More recently, entrepreneurship has also been added as one of these factors. Understanding these is essential to understanding the two production functions which this WIKI article focuses on. (2) Land Understanding what is meant by land is relatively simple. This comprises all of the natural resources that a particular producer has at their disposal. Most often this means immediate natural resources, like oil or the property on which the production facility is located.
The main challenges in the manufacturing companies are in the following stage of product development.
Reliability is one of primary criteria of any maintenance activities. It’s an industry that requires high reliability levels throughout the operation of the aircraft. Preventive maintenance procedures are applied to maintain this reliability at an optimum level. Although higher level of Preventive Maintenance is not economical but if not performed than it may lead to failure of parts or equipment which lead to the aircraft grounded for long duration which may lead to huge economic loss to the company.
Computer integrated manufacturing is a relatively new technology arising from the application of many computer science sub disciplines to support the manufacturing enterprise. The technology of CIM emphasizes that all aspects of manufacturing should be not only computerized as much as possible but also linked together via a computer communication network into an integrated whole. In short, CIM has the potential to enable manufacturers to build cheaper, higher-quality products and thus improve their competitiveness.
