Every morning as I start my day, I am obligated to step on the scale and weigh myself whether I want to or not. Reason being, I must ensure that I am not accumulating fluid from congestive heart failure. There are days where I can gain anywhere from five to ten pounds, if I am uncareful, in turn that takes a toll on my self-image regarding my weight even though it is fluid weight. Growing up, I never had major issues regarding my weight. I was active in sports, clubs and always outdoors. It was not until after I had a child, that I began having major issues and had to do a life style change to save my life.
Weighing too much is a matter of energy balance, a matter of calories going in verses calories going out, right? Maybe not. New research and new thinking in nutrition has started shifting this idea of energy balance to a view centered on food as a whole. It may be that getting rid of those pounds does not require hours of pounding on a treadmill as much as it requires rethinking what you eat.

It is currently estimated that almost 70% of adults are either overweight or obese. Although, the increase in prevalence rates of obesity seems to be slowing down since 2008, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys show that overweight and obesity continues to be a growing problem among some groups of people, including those with low income and less education, and in some ethnic and racial minority groups.

The author still states that “these arbitrary designations do not take into account individual characteristics such as body shape or natural muscularity, nor do they apply to children or seniors” (Renneboog, 2014, para.6). However, BMI not always is accurate and presents some limitations in measurement of body fat, sometimes classifying people as obese when in fact they are not. Since BMI is not 100% trustable it is acceptable that “this is one factor which requires more attention in the use of the term “overweight” and “obese”” (Eaton & Clydesdale, 2014, para.10). Accordingly to Eaton & Clydesdale, 2014, “BMI has been used in numerous medical studies, but even the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States realizes its limitations to directly measure body fat or muscle”. Finally, “it is accepted that the most accurate way to measure body fat is to weigh a person underwater or in a chamber that displaces air” (Eaton & Clydesdale, 2014, para.3). According to this same author, “there is another accurate test to measure human body fat, which is called the dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) test, uses X-rays to measure body fat” (Eaton & Clydesdale, 2014, para.3). The food tracker benefited me in so many ways. I total three days out and all calculated 4800 calories. The food tracker allowed me only 2000 calories a day and wanted me to target at least 150 min/week in physical activity. The recommendations for my calories were very direct and limited to only a certain amount that I could manage. It help me manage my daily food intake, inform me of the calories and fats I was placing into my body, and educated me on the need foods needed from the food pyramid. My son even loved placing the items we ate into the system to look at “our numbers” (he it calls that).
If you're overweight at 191 pounds, weight loss can not only make you look better, it can also improve your health. Being overweight heightens your risk of various health conditions including heart disease, sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Whether you need to lose 10 pounds or 50 pounds, the way to go about it remains the same; you must burn more calories than your body uses every day.
Unfortunately, the weight-challenged are becoming a larger part of the US population. In 2008, approximately 20-24% of Arizonans had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher which defines obesity. BMI is “a measure of an adult’s weight in relation to [their] height” (Kim). The causes of obesity are related to many factors including genetics, biochemistry, gender, physiology, culture, and psychosocial issues. There are different factors that should be taken into consideration when designing with overweight people in mind. The first is the building entry which should be wider than the minimum to accommodate for larger sizes and bariatric wheelchairs. Elevators should also have a 6,000-6,500 pound weight capacity to hold people of larger sizes and wheelchairs. Another area to adjust are waiting areas. They should provide seating for larger individuals, intermixed with standard seating. Different options include loveseats that provide a larger surface to sit on and seats that are 30-40’ wide with a reinforced structure to support larger weights. It is suggested that 10-20% of general seating can be used to accommodate larger patrons (Kim). Bathrooms are another area that can be discriminatory towards overweight individuals. Floor-mounted toilets with a weight capacity of 1,000 pounds is preferred; the height of the seat should be around 17-19”. Grab bars should be utilized
Being overweight has made me under active in my daily life. Because of my weight, I have back problems and I am unable to keep as active as I would like. My weight also inhibits my ability to walk as long and as fast as I would like to. I think the most inflicting thing my weight has done to myself, is the depression I developed. Being overweight my confidence is not as strong as I would like. This makes me feel unmotivated. These are all things that can affect me as I age.

In this lab, body measurements are taken to find the body percent fat, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index (BMI), and basal metabolic rate (BMR). Skin folds for the chest, abdomen, and thigh were taken for males, and triceps, iliac crest, and thigh for females. Age, height, and weight for each person were recorded as well as the waist and hip circumference.
