I have always pushed myself to be as active as possible in a variety of clubs, leadership roles, and community activities, and being involved in organizations such as FFA, National Honor Society, and Student Council, as well as being the senior class president, have all guided me down a path of volunteering and helping out the community more than I ever thought possible. Although I have participated in a variety of community service activities like trash pickup, painting local park benches, helping in the local blood drive, setting up for the Grand River Homemaker's Silent Auction, and a variety of other activities, there is one community service project I was a part of that really opened my eyes to the difference one can make in their …show more content…

The backpack program is designed to ensure the children in our community do not go home hungry over the weekend or holiday breaks. After learning a little more about the number of students that are a part of this program, my heart was broken, but a fire was ignited from within me to make a difference in the lives of these children. To do this, we decided to hand-make drawstring backpacks, design recipe books that would ensure they knew how to use the food they received, and collect extra food so they did not go hungry over Christmas break. This project took a lot of time and dedication to accomplish, but despite the setbacks we faced, we were able to get the job done. I can hardly begin to describe the feelings I felt after packing the backpacks with the extra food we had collected and recipe books, and finally being able to deliver our hard work to the elementary school. This project taught me how important it is to get to know the people in your community and learn about what you can do to help make a difference in their lives.
