The sale of food products in the market of Tlatelolco with its various colors, shapes, smells, and sounds “unified Native American cuisines while preserving rich regional variations; [epitomized] the social relationships that depended on the feeding of gods and people; and [preserved] the cultural significance of taste for pre-Columbian cooking and eating” (9-10). Cuisine played an important part in the constructing of social hierarchies in Mesoamerica, and to this day continues to shape individuality not only in Mexico, but also for every country. Traditional forms of Mesoamerican cooking mainly belonged to women, and three simple utensils including a cazuela, a metate, and a comal, allowed them to frugally make delicious tortillas. But they “derived much of their self-worth from skill at the metate, the ability to grind maize so they could feed tortillas and tamales to their husbands and children,” (14-15). In Anaya's novel, Bless Me Ultima, Ultima serves the purpose of curandera or healer, but she also serves as the powerful force of good for the main protagonist of the story, Antonio, helping him understand the world as he tries to grow up.
Every summer my family and I go to our house in the cape just north of Boston. One hot summer morning, I was leaving the house to meet my family at the beach, suddenly I remembered my mother asked me to pick up a jar of “Kingfish Herring” for her and her friend to snack on at the beach.
The can of squid was a delicacy and when Única found it she was excited and said to Mondolfo, “Monboñombo, look at what my Guardian Angel put in the trash for me!” (109). They shared the squid and that night Única and Mondolfo’s relationship changed. That night “they sat down on the road by the shack. He pulled the easy-open tab and the can revealed its generous contents” (109). The author continues to describe the night using expository description, “Mondolfo had the courtesy to spear first, offering her a piece of squid to mouth, and her stomach did a double traction flip” (109). They continued to feed each other and Única was nervous because she was unfamiliar with that kind of feeling. They kissed and Única expressed how she has “never been kissed” they continued and “they took each other’s’ hands and devoured each other on Mondolfo’s cardboard” (109). After this Mondolfo asked Única to marry him, she said yes, and Oso Carmuco was asked to marry them. The wedding happened quickly and people were excited as “nothing else was talked about in the dump, and Oso Carmuco walked around a nervous wreck trying to memorize the Wedding Mass” (115). During the wedding, everyone was happy for them as they “broke out into applause, some threw trash up in the air, they shouted and the whistled”

The formation of the company Bacardi begins in the early 19th century in the prosperous trading town of Santiago de Cuba. Santiago de Cuba attracted the Bacardi brothers, Magin, Juan, Jose, and Facundo from the port of Stiges, southwest of Barcelona, Spain. The brothers worked hard, with the little money that they had, to establish a business, creating a shop to sell everyday goods (1). Around 1843, Don Facundo Bacardi Masso, the second youngest Bacardi Brother, had saved up enough money to begin his own business alongside his wife, Amalia Moreau. In France there are different kinds of music. Rap is one of the most innovative and unique products. For this paper, I decided to choose, Melanie Georgiades aka Diam’s who was a French rapper born on July 25th, 1980 in Greece. She was the unique child. While she was three years old, her mother moved to France after her divorced with her husband. The single mother and she lived in the Essonne Departement, in Ile-de-France. Diam’s discovered rap with the album “The Chronic” by Dr. Dre in 1992 and the “Je rap” by the famous French band NTM with Joe Starr.
Much like the banana industry of the past, there was once an incredible variety to the fish one could find and purchase at market, but recently only a few are easy to find at the local grocery store, due to the demand for a consistent and recognizable product. Cod is an instantly recognizable name in terms of fish breeds. It is a fairly bland fish, however its history is anything but; wars have been fought over Cod and it has been a famous contraband commodity. Consumer demand plagues this fish as well as directly influenced its decline. Unlike the cultural underlying influences found in the banana industry, Cod is remarkably simple. The old woman would hold hands of the young girls and watch. If the hands were smooth and pliant; if the spices placed on the palms sang their songs, the girls would be accepted or else they were hurled into the sea: Spices have strong colonial connotations and they also symbolise the subversive power of the postcolonial era. When we look back down the lanes and by lanes of history, the spices had first allured, enchanted and enslaved the foreign travelers with their latent powers. In the course of time, these travelers became the rulers of the land. In this tale of dreams and desires, the spices are mastered by a female, incidentally called Mistress, rendering a distinct colonial master-slave flavour.
