Baby bottle caries is defined as the presence of one or more decayed, missing (due to caries), or filled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth. This condition is usually seen between birth and almost six years of age. Baby bottle caries is often referred to as early childhood caries. Early childhood caries is a significant public health problem and is found throughout the general population. It is extremely important to recognize the susceptibility of decay on any child’s tooth as soon as they erupt. There are many aspects of early childhood caries, baby bottle caries is recognized as one of the more severe syndromes. There are many factors which can cause tooth decay. The bacteria can be passed to the baby when the mother puts the baby’s feeding spoon in her mouth or cleans the pacifier in her mouth. One common cause is the frequent, prolonged exposure of the baby’s teeth to drinks that contain sugar. These drinks include those with natural sugar, such as milk and formula. Bacteria uses this sugar to make acids that attack the teeth. The acid damages the enamel causing the demineralization that leads to cavities. Giving a baby a sugary drink as they’re going to sleep is harmful because the flow of saliva decreases. Baby bottle tooth decay often occurs in the upper front teeth, but other teeth may also be affected. First way to prevent early childhood caries is to educate the public about the importance of the children’s primary teeth. More importantly the newly expecting parents should be educated whether it be at their regular check-ups or at the pediatrician’s office. Good oral hygiene at an early age is necessary even if there are no teeth currently erupted. Every time the baby is fed with a bottle it is suggested the wipe off their gums with a clean gauze or washcloth. Once the first tooth erupts is when the parents would begin brushing their baby’s teeth and simply cleaning and massaging the areas that do not yet have teeth. A pea-sized dab of toothpaste across a small soft brush can be used, any excess toothpaste should be wiped off. Early childhood caries is common in areas where water fluoridation is lacking therefore, it is possible to ask the child’s dentist or doctor if a supplement is needed. Dentists may offer special sealant coatings that can help prevent tooth decay which is why scheduling regular dental visits by the child’s first birthday is vital. Other techniques to prevent baby bottle caries is to not fill the baby bottles with sugary drinks. Even when giving a child juice it is recommended to water it down. Soft drinks are not recommended as for they have no nutritional value. It is never too late to break bad habits, it is easier to break the habit now and cut the risk of baby bottle
