For my movement, I decided to talk about Autism Speaks. I chose to talk about this organization because I believe that they are an organization that has truly been helping people and families who have children that have been diagnosed with autism. The goal of this paper is to share the message of Autism Speaks and share how they have helped people along the way.
Autism Speaks is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright. The Wright’s created this organization after their grandson was diagnosed with autism and they wanted to help other families whose children had been diagnosed with autism. When a family member is diagnosed with autism, it is often a difficult and challenging time for the family. That is where Autism Speaks steps in to help. Autism Speaks has the mission goal of “We are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a possible cure for autism” (Autism speaks).
Even though Autism Speaks has not been around for a very long time they still have done a lot to help those who are diagnosed with it. Autism Speaks has been a key player in raising funds for research. When they first started researching Autism Speaks was a key player in trying to prove that vaccines were linked to childhood autism. After

extensive research, they then decided to focus their funds towards helping those with medical bills and by helping to learn how to help people who are diagnosed with autism so that they are able to live a happy and fulfilling life. There are numerous ways for people to get involved in Autism Speaks.
If someone is looking at getting involved in the organization they are able to volunteer within their local chapter. During my interview, I asked the representative how people often got involved. The representative that I talked to was named Ida. Ida said that a lot of the people get involved in two ways. She says that people can run in one of their races, and if the person isn’t able to make the race, they can donate online or sponsor one of the runners. Ida also said that Autism Speaks has a lot of plans for the future. They hope to continue to help and support people who have autism and their
families. Autism speaks is an organization that is well known for its contribution’s that it has made towards helping people who have autism. Autism Speaks helps these people in a number of different ways. The have funded a lot of research in the past in the hopes of finding a cure for autism. They were also a key player in trying to see if vaccines did indeed cause autism in children. After extensive research, there was no proof of this connection. Autism Speaks receives their funding through private donors and through their Autism Speaks walks that people participate in. Autism Speaks hopes to continue to support the research of autism and the people that this disease affects.
Ethos: A key element of ethos is the speaker credibility. Ethos is also created when the writer is an expert and/or the writer uses evidence from reliable source Autism speaks a non-profit organization is providing first responders training at the national level is an important step towards increasing the safety of the autism community, by ensuring that first responders have the tools they need to effectively responds to an an emergency involving a child with autism (Autism Speaks, 2017).
The short documentary video “Prisoners of Silence” focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders with a clear emphasis on autism. It further delves into the rather controversial method of treatment for autism known as facilitated communication, which was first developed in the early 1990s. The video follows the introduction and ultimately the downfall of such a treatment as controversy quickly ensues after a series of sexual abuse cases and ample scientific evidence are produced.
The video begins by introducing a revolutionary new possibility in the understanding of what autism is and how to approach those persons afflicted. Through a technique called "facilitated language" many autistic children were seemingly freed from the inability to communicate. Many were able to "speak" freely through a letter keypad with the help of a facilitator or guide. There are stories upon stories of success - of students, teachers, families, etc.
This book was a great read. The heartwarming tale of two young children who manage to overcome the disability under the category of autism. The author, the mother of these two children, uses her language to make the reader feel connected with the struggles of the family and the elated feeling when the children are deemed functioning within normal levels. This book gives insight on several different therapies, some that seemed helpful and others that seemed silly. It touches on the subject of inclusion as well. This book allows individuals to relate to those who have children with autism and gives parents of children with autism hope that their child's disability is not a permanent one.
To begin defines what autism is, and the stress that is bestowed onto the caregivers that support a child with this type of mental disability. Adam M. Hutton, the author, had conducted an interview of 21 families about the recognition, diagnosis of autism in their child, services accessed, and the impact of having a child with autism on their family. A common thread throughout the thesis is the empowerment of families, that have to endure the joys and hardships that come with having a child with specific needs. The author also encourages families to use the resources available to them to better care for this type of
The first genre I did for my research on autism awareness is a character profile featuring myself. What a typical character profile look like is a picture of that person along with information such as name, age, hobbies, race, etc. I choose the character profile because, as a person with mild autism, I simply wanted to show that people with autism can have similar interests and abilities with others. Throughout my life, I always feel a bit different from other people and couldn’t express my own feelings without being judged. Over the years, I did found a few people that accept me as a person and I was very comfortable to express my personality. I still have my moments but at least I feel a bit more comfortable expressing what I want to express.
Have you ever heard of the term ASD? What are your thoughts when you see a child in public who is misbehaving? Well the two of these questions might be linked together. ASD is better known as autism spectrum disorder which is a disorder of the development in the brain according to Autism Speaks Inc. (2015). Due to this developmental issue children can be thought of as being bad or unruly, but in reality they cannot help it. The reason it may seem that way is because the brain isn’t processing like it should be. The brain may be sending multiple messages to the body at one time or to the wrong places in the body which can cause children to seem bad. According to Autism Speaks Inc. (2015) there are multiple variances of autism. Although we know

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that effects the brains development. It is characterized by affecting communication, cognition and social interaction. The spectrum of the disorders ranges from a mild condition called Asperger’s syndrome to a more severe form, which severely impairer’s development. The Office of Communications and Public Liaison states that the disorder affects one and eighty-eight children, however ASD effects boys more frequently than girls (Office of Communications and Public Liaison, 2013). ASD emerges in all age, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The significant varied character and severity of the disorder is why ASD is considered a spectrum that poses a broad range of symptoms.
Autism Speaks is a non-profit organization that works to help people and their families who have Autism. I picked this organization because I truly believe that they are helping to get rid of the stigma that those who have autism are not like everyone else, therefore they should be treated differently. Along the way, they are also helping those who can’t always afford doctors and medicine. Autism Speaks is more than just a voice for the individuals and their families. They also have the goal of raising funds for the families and for research concerning autism. All their values are outlined in their mission statement which is: “Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research” (Autism Speaks).
Having worked in an Autism program first hand I can tell you these people are doing everything they can to help these kids into functioning members of society. Though some will need to be assisted their entire lives some can lead semi-normal lives. In these classrooms these programs not only focus on learning the fundamentals like all children in school (english, math, science, etc..) they also teach social skills and activities, they teach the kids things like proper etiquette in public places, safety on the phone, all the things that that isn 't 'common sense ' to them because of their disability. They work hard to help the students who are more high functioning to integrate into normal classrooms and the children who are more so low functioning to be able to do the basics and beyond for themselves. These programs are continually developing and reshaping to best fit the needs of their
Autism is a problem that people have with communicating. It can affect many contrasting types of people in divergent ways and there is not yet a complete cure for it. People need to know about this disability and what people can do with people who have it.
Autism is a disorder characterized by significant problems in communication and social functioning. Autism is actually called Autism Spectrum Disorder and encompasses a broad range disabilities such as Asperger syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome, and Pervavasive Development Disorder (Dunlap & Fox, n.d.). There are also varying degrees of the disorder from low-functioning (no communication and no social interaction) to high-functioning (some communication and inappropriate but existent social skills.)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder that affects children and individuals all over the world in large quantities. There is no known cause or cure for Autism. Autism awareness is extremely important for individuals that are affected by autism every day. Individuals and their families are struggling throughout the years, financially and emotionally. Insurance coverage for individuals on the autism spectrum is important for the duration of the individual’s life and all those involved. Autism Awareness is an important priority for the wellbeing of humanity. Autism is an epidemic.
I know autism when I see it. For those not familiar with autism, Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, defines autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees (hence, a “Spectrum” that includes both low- and high-functioning individuals), by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.
