To begin, ethos is the appeal to credibility. Ethos use of persuasion to show the writer has a full knowledge of what is being said. Amanda Coyne displays this rhetorical device when she notes she has a family member is prison. This small amount of information credits her knowledge on the emotional effects and the experiences one may have inside a federal prison visitation room. Hasselstrom is a female poet, essayist and writing teacher who is using experiences in order to debate the issue of carrying a weapon. To start off with, Kristof has a very credible background to back him up. It includes the likes of graduating from Harvard and being a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. He has also written as a columnist for the New York Times since 2001, meaning he is established and meant to be trusted by daily readers. This trustworthy background of the author is important because he is showing the audience that he is a credible source and is worth listening to. Statistics play a keen role in helping persuade the audience because it shows reliable information that reader trust and that he is not bias. Kristof states,

Many people and organizations use writing and visual methods to persuade readers to their view. In such pieces, the author will use many different tricks and appeals in order to draw the reader to his or her train of thought. According to Andrea Lunsford in her instructional book The Everyday Writer, these appeals can be broken down into three main types – logical, emotional and ethical. A logical argument uses facts, statistics and surveys to back up what the author is saying and is commonly referred to as logos. An ethical argument is one that tries to build up the authors characters and prove to the reader that the author is qualified to give his or her views on the topic at hand. Ethical arguments are commonly called ethos. Finally, the most effective (and possibly misleading) appeal is emotional. Pathos, as it’s commonly called, is achieved by simply appealing to emotions or making the problem more ‘human’ (Lundsford 115-116). Any sort of persuasive piece, be it an essay, a video, or an editorial; employs ethos, pathos, and logos to try to prove its point.
