In the book divergent Tris Prior deals with authority. She chooses to live a dauntless lifestyle which is very different than the one she was used to. There are many leaders at the headquarters that she has to listen to. Tris is outspoken and courageous which can lead to trouble when it comes to authority. Tris stands up to Eric, one of the Dauntless leaders in charge of the recruits. She did this to protect one of her friends that Eric was mad at. Her punishment for talking back to Eric was having to stand in front of a target and letting Four, the other leader in charge of recruits, throw knives at her. If she flinched she would have been kicked out of Dauntless. Tris stood up because she knew it was the right thing to do. She stood up for her friend in his time of need. They have orders sent to trackers in their neck. The Dauntless are killing innocent people and have no choice over what they do. Tris is not effected by the tracker in her neck because she is divergent. This means that she does not fit into just one faction like most people. She is not just brave or just smart. She is a combination of all of the factions. At first she pretends like the tracker affects her so that she will not be killed. She finds four who is also a divergent. They follow the others to see what is going on, only to find that the faction they both come from, abnegation, is being murdered by this army. They don’t follow the orders given by the leaders. They want all of the innocent Abnegation to be killed. Tris and Four break off to find the leaders of Abnegation. Tris eventually finds her dad, her brother, and four’s dad. Her mom had died just before trying to save
