Critical thinking is imperative to the development of ideas that portray in everything that is seen in daily life. Critical thinking is part of daily life that many people fail to recognize or maybe distracted to commit to logical reasoning. In the movie, Divergent directed by Neil Burger there are many pitfalls within the story and the characters. The pitfalls shown by the protagonist in the movie, Tris are using bias against change, appeal to tradition and stereotypes. Tris is an example of following appeal to tradition by believing in a single entity government and different factions. Tris is always questioning what goes around her. On Tris’s first test, she had to take a test as an initiate to get an idea as to what faction was best suited for her. Tris questioned herself of what was it that she wanted from herself in life and what society demanded from her. Her none conformist attitude and her bias against change eventually led her to discover not only herself, but what her meaning life was. As mentioned before, her journey began when she took the first test to find out which of the factions she would fit into accordingly with her test results. Her test results were inconclusive which meant that she was different from the rest of the initiates that took the test at the same time. As a result, when it came time to choose a faction, Tris decided to choose the faction that was the least similar to her own. Even though she was still uncertain about her purpose, Tris decided to make a daunting change in her life when she picked Dauntless as her new faction. Furthermore, during the Dauntless initiation process, Tris does not mind change at all, she arrived into Dauntless as a weak initiate being in last place during the early stages of the initiation process. As the initiation progressed, Tris was extremely focused on becoming the top initiate that she and one of the Dauntless leaders, Tobias fall in love with each other. …show more content…

The society in Divergent is shown as a society that has overcome many aspects in which plague today’s society. Unfortunately, the movie shows that is true that the factions have stereotypes for each faction. First, initiates can decide what faction they will join. Afterwards they will be put to the test during their training with their faction. If they fail, they will be segregated with the factionless. The factionless is a community of people who did not pass the test and must be marginalized from society. As a result, the other factions believe that only the weak become factionless. This is not entirely true that the factionless people who fail the initiation process, some of them could not decide which faction to choose from so they became factionless. In addition, there are many times in the movie where members of different factions call out the other factions by using stereotypes as an insult. For example, during the initiation trial at Dauntless, Tris is constantly harassed by her peers who came from other factions by calling her “stiff”, which is what other factions refer the Abnegation faction. This suggests that the different factions have different stereotypes for other factions. Moreover, Abnegation are not the only faction which suffers from stereotypes.
