Parenting style is one of the most important factors influencing children’s academic performance, since parents are the ‘first teachers’. In Hong Kong, A lot of parents take authoritarian parental methods, which emphasizes children being absolutely obedient to their rules. In Hong Kong, parents generally believed that authoritarian parenting is the best way to enhance children academic performance by having a ‘good starting point’. Therefore, this essay will discuss how authoritarian parenting affect children’s interest of learning and psychological problems. Afterwards, it will provide arguments that authoritarian parenting not a best way to develop children academic performance.
In the first place, Children might loss the interest of learning through authoritarian parenting. In order to improve the children’s school achievement, the parents enforced their children join a wide variety tutorial and extra-curricular. Then, the children will do not have enough time to rest, it will influence the effective of learning, the children do not have enough attention during the lesson. According to the most famous ‘Tiger Moms’, Amy Chua, stated that “Love is plus punishing high expectations, she do everything, it good for her daughter. So that, no matter weekends and vacations, the children must keep studying and practicing”(Annie, 1). So that the children should obey and follow the order,and she believed the most important thing to achieve success is practicing, then the children should spend time to studying, not playing. Growing up, two group of people, parents, and grandparents, took the time and the energy to raise me. Both of them had different approaches when raising me. These approaches were different parenting styles. According to Baumrind, parenting style was the “[capturing] normal variations in parents’ attempts to control and socialize their children” (Darling, 1999). To put it simply, parenting style goal was to lecture, influence, and discipline a child. In general, there are four parenting styles with their own specific benefits and disadvantages. Furthermore, parenting style, granted the dynamic of the family was understood, can be identified in families.

Lindo Jong provides the reader with a summary of her difficulty in passing along the Chinese culture to her daughter: “I wanted my children to have the best combination: American circumstances and Chinese character. How could I know these two things do not mix? I taught her how American circumstances work. If you are born poor here, it's no lasting shame . . . Telling a child they have to be number one in every subject, leads them to believe anything less is unsatisfactory. He says, “The children of ‘Tiger Moms’ are too programmed. They get into a good college, but they don’t know what to do next,” (Yi). Parenting is one of the things in life where there is not a rulebook and there are a lot of beliefs on how to raise children. Parents tend to raise their children based on their childhood experiences whether they were good or bad. Some parents raise their children just like they were raised and some raise their children differently because they don’t agree with the way their parents raised them. The focus of our group project is on Chinese Americans. We studied various aspects of their lives and the preservation of their culture in America. The Chinese American population is continually growing. In fact, in 1990, they were the largest group of Asians in the United States (Min 58). But living in America and adjusting to a new way of life is not easy. Many Chinese Americans have faced and continue to face much conflict between their Chinese and American identities. But many times, as they adapt to this new life, they are also able to preserve their Chinese culture and identity through various ways. We studied these things through the viewing of a movie called Joy Luck Club, conducting interviews with Chinese Americans, and doing outside research.

Parenting styles have been widely defined by Baumrind into three categories, authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. Parenting styles can be defined as a pattern of attitudes in how parents choose to express and communicate with their children. These styles are categorized based on the level of nurturance, parental control and level of responsiveness (Dwairy, 2004). Authoritative style exhibits high levels of demand, responsiveness and nurturance; authoritarian style exhibits high levels of demand but low levels of responsiveness, permissive style exhibits low levels of demand but high in responsiveness and nurturance (Dwairy, 2004). These parenting styles have been proposed to have a significant impact on a child’s development as well as academic achievement and psychological well-being. Children reared by authoritative parents are stated to have the highest levels of academic achievement, self-esteem, emotional adjustment and well-being according to Baumrind’s category of styles (Dwairy, 2004). However, these three categories are based on Western samples and have been said to describe parenting styles mainly in the West and question its limitations in describing parenting across cultures, as each style’s defining patterns may have different meanings across cultures.

To be more specific, authoritarian parents are close to their children because they usually get involved in their child’s every activity. According to Amy Chua, the author of “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”, she claims that, “Chinese parents spend approximately 10 times as long every day drilling academic activities with their children.” Chua’s point is that Chinese parents are likely to spend time with their kids to make sure that their kids are doing well and safe. For example, when kids have assignments from school, helicopter parents would help with their kids’ homework. Some strict parents may not teach their kids’ homework, but they would force or push their kids to do homework by keeping an eye on them.
