Since 2004 the automotive manufacturing industry in Australia has seen a steady decrease in the production volumes and profitability for manufacturers (Industry, June 2014 Automotive Update, 2014). Many governmental schemes have been introduced over time to increase efficiency and facilitate international competitiveness with varying degrees of success, however despite these attempts by the Australian government to increase and sustain international exports of automotive products, local firms still struggle against rising imports and increasing international competition. As a result of this, the three major Australian automotive manufacturers Toyota, Ford and Holden have announced plans to cease production in Australia by the end of 2017 (Ford plans to withdraw production in 2016, with Holden and Toyota ceasing manufacturing in 2017). A major factor …show more content…
Proponents of free trade suggest that corporate welfare should be absent from the automotive industry, and instead left to the forces of the market, insisting that if the industry is not viable or competitive it should not survive (Cowan, 2014). Government support for unsustainable industries are seen as ineffective and detrimental to taxpayers. Contrastingly, supporters of protectionism in the Australian automotive industry propose that the industry requires more that the current level of governmental support provided. Overseas governments are seen to be heavily subsidizing their own automotive industries, making it extremely difficult for Australian manufacturers to compete without the same levels of governmental protection. Protectionists emphasize the impact of losses in the workforce and of the resulting “spill-over effects, including to advanced manufacturing and research and development (R&D)” (F.C.A.I., 2013) in the event of the industry’s
In the early 1960’s the Canadian automotive industry faced a growing crisis of a seemingly uncontrollable decline in the production and sales of American brand vehicles, which was a major industry in Southern Ontario. Several domestic and international factors had contributed to this economic crisis and the task of stabilizing it fell upon the shoulders of the federal government. Official inquiries were established and several economic policies were put into place to help remedy the situation, but it was not until the monumental passing of the Automotive Products Trade Agreement of 1965(APTA), signed by Prime Minster Lester B. Pearson and President Lyndon B. Johnson, that significant reorganization of the entire North American auto sector could take place. Commonly known as the Auto Pact, this treaty essentially allowed for the free trade of automotive products across the Canada-US border, given that certain industry requirements had been met. Through analyzing the history and the weaknesses of the Canadian automotive industry in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, this essay will affirm that the Auto Pact was a necessary restructuring of the North American car industry that inherently benefited Canada’s continental automotive trade with the United States.
In many ways, the automotive industry has huge impacts on Canada. The impact it has creates jobs, and services. It also boosts economy and contributes to its success. Over the last two decades, the automotive industry has been a leading contributor to Canada’s economy and is a primary factor as to whether or not the economy will be successful. There are many contributing branches of the sector that allow it to be successful. This is shown through the production and manufacturing of vehicles, as well as the sale of the vehicles. The automotive industry has had a significant impact on Canada’s economy over the last 10 years. If the production and sale of domestic vehicles were to decline, Canada’s economy to be severely crippled and fall back into a recession.

Over the past 150 years, Canada’s relationships with other nations has led to the development of many trade sanctions. The nations involved in these trade sanctions haven’t always had the greatest relationship, allowing Canada to become the tie between the nations, advancing the development of countless Canadian industries. Due to Canada’s relatively small population, its automotive industry, hasn’t been able to grow as a self-sustained industry, leading the industry’s development to occur solely through economic sanctions. The two dominant forces these automotive sanctions face are the United States and Europe, each having a large stake in the development of the industry.
First, protectionism will hinder Canada’s ability to compete against other countries of the world. Free trade does the exact opposite. Selling foreign goods in Canada pressures Canadian companies to produce better and cheaper items, and allows Canada to raise its competitiveness worldwide, not just domestically. The inefficient factories in Canada must close for Canada to remain prosperous, and Canada should not subsidize those companies unless it is du...

Although there most job tasks have been taken over by machines, there still are some tasks that only us humans can do, for example, machines can’t build engines or install them correctly either. But we can also repair and maintain mechanical equipment, select what parts the machines make so we can install them into the vehicle, and many more.
The automobile industry is a pillar of global economy. Globally automotive contributes roughly 3 % of all GDP output. It historically has contributed 3.0 – 3.5 % to the overall GDP in the US. The share is even higher in the emerging markets, with the rates in china and India at 7 % and rising. China produces the highest number of automobiles followed by US and Japan (oica.net, 2015). Many other industries such as steel, iron, glass, aluminium, textiles etc. are associated with the automotive industry and resulting in more than 50 million jobs owed to the auto
Automobiles are a necessity today, just as they were back in the early 1900’s when Mr. Ford built and started his company. Over 100 years ago, the Model A, and Model T were very basic and made of heavy steel to withstand the use and the harsh environments they faced (Ford, 2015). Throughout American history the automotive industry continues to change, and the changes create a ripple effect on the industry in regards to competitors, labor force, suppliers. While there is no real threat of a new auto manufacture, joining America’s Big Three, there is a threat when one of them introduce a new automobile or completely redo an existing one, like Ford’s latest F-150 series. These changes create additional effects felt by others outside of the automobile industry.
One of the most cited arguments for intervention is that of protecting jobs and industries from unfair foreign competition (Hill). While industries like aerospace are protected given their importance for national security, job protection appears as a result of unions and industries putting political pressure given the threat of more efficient foreign firms (Hill). Many countries achieve this by increasing the tariffs on imports of foreign products. What really happens when a certain industry is ...
