Throughout the movie Forrest Gump, the main character played by Tom Hanks portrays himself as being on the autistic spectrum. From start to finish the movie shows scenes from his childhood all the way through to his adult life. At a movie stand point Forrest has plenty of unintentionally funny commentary along with actions. On the flip side, what is made out to be comical in the movie are actually red flags for a developmental disorder. The combination of his socially awkward characteristics, knowledge, and repetitive behaviors, yet highly functioning led me to his diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome. To begin, from childhood all the way through to adulthood Forrest Gump was rejected by peers for his lack of social abilities. This was an automatic red flag, difficulty in social situations throughout his life was a major component to this disorder. As a child Forrest was bullied by other peers because of his lack of social skills, unless it was him rambling on about his life and his “momma”. In Forrest’s case, he attended the University of Alabama and played football there as well. It is more common than not that an individual excels within the classroom but not socially. Along with that many people with Asperger’s perform repetitive movements or words. Forrest repetitively talks about his “momma”, what she has told him and experiences with her. As far as repetitive movements, Forrest is notorious for running; the famous quote “Run Forrest Run”. The quote started when Jenny was telling him to run away from the boys throwing dirt at him in elementary school. From that moment on Forrest says that he never stopped running, this being his repetitive movement. A trait that makes Forrest Gump a great hero is that he is protective, of his friends & Jenny. Jenny was constantly being mistreated & hurt. Whenever Forrest was there & saw this, he punched that guy right in the face to defend her. Jenny also had a horrible childhood & was abused by her dad too. To begin with, Mister Forrest Gump has shown humbleness throughout his life. The first time he showed humbleness in the movie was less than 10 minutes into the film. This was when Forrest conversed, “My momma always said…” This phrase is repeated multiple times throughout the movie. It may sound useless, but is shows a lot. It shows the representation of ‘momma’. ‘Momma’ is showing the wisdom that Forrest never believed he had. This displays how humble Forrest is. Rather than calling himself smart and following his own rules, Forrest followed the rules and principles his momma told him to. This is just one big example of how Mr. Gump showed a pure humble attitude throughout the film. The second point in the exceptional film was when Forrest helped an African-American women by picking up a book she dropped. This shows the amount of humbleness in Forrest. Therefore, many behaviours that seem odd are due to neurological differences and not the result of intentional rudeness or bad behaviour.
In the 1940’s two doctors in different countries observed children displaying similar behaviors and deficits. One of the doctors was Viennese pediatrician Dr. Hans Asperger and the other was a child psychiatrist named Leo Kanner. Dr. Kanner was the first of the two doctors to report his observations. What he described were behaviors similar to those seen in children with what we call Autistic disorder. The behaviors affected the children’s communication, social interaction and interests. Dr. Asperger later published an article discussing what he dubbed “Autistische Psychpathen im Kindesalter” which translates to “Autistic Psychopathy”. Although some behaviors overlapped, there were differences leading to the belief that these doctors were documenting two different disorders. The two most prevalent were the differences in motor and language abilities (Miller, Ozonoff). Another was Asperger’s belief that his patients were of normal or above average intelligence. It was not until 1994 that Asperger Syndrome was entered into the Diagnostics and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM IV), finally becoming an official diagnosis. At the time, Asperger Syndrome (AS) was labeled as a subcategory of autism along with autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive development disorder. Since then, the community of people with Asperger Syndrome has grown to love and better understand the disorder that they live with every day. Some of them have even affectionately named themselves “Aspies”.
It is obvious that Forrest suffers from a mental disability, and Lieutenant Dan ends up with a physical disability. The audience can blatantly see this throughout the movie. Forrest’s IQ is significantly lower than the average person’s and as a kid, it restricts him from going to a normal school. Even though it is not him who creates the opportunity to have a proper education, when he is given the chance he makes the most out of it by graduating high school, and going further to attain a college degree. Academics are not the only part of school that pose a challenge to him; Forrest has to put up with exclusion as well as verbal and physical abuse. Even though it is not easy for Forrest to get along with others, he is able to get through his social hindrances by finding someone special named Jenny. She loves him, looks out for him, and through the bullying Forrest ends up finding great happiness with his one special girl. After school, Forrest joins the military, which is one of the best solutions for him. As a result of his IQ, finding a long lasting career would be very difficult. The army is a respected job that Forrest excels at far past the ordinary person. Thus, joining the army creates many opportunities for Forrest, changing his life for the better. He wins a medal of honor and discovers ping pong which he goes on to play in the Olympics. As Forrest Gump’s famous slogan goes, "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna (sic) get." It cannot be held any truer than during the era of the Cold War (1947–1991). The mighty nations of United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics were the main players. Although the movie shows the 1940’s era leading up to 1980’s the Cold War was a fraction on it. It was not an actual war but more a standoff between two strong nations the United States and Soviet Union. It leads to our involvement in Vietnam, the moon landing, and government scandals. All where illustrated in the movie Forrest Gump. America was changing rapidly not only the people even our government. It showed how policies and people would change the focal point certain decades. Although the events were seen through a fictional character they were accurate in illustrating the mood and emotion of how the world was in those times. While it would be possible for a single person to be present at all of these events, it is unlikely that anyone was, so that part of the film is not true, otherwise most of the facts are true. The differences between the history in the film and real life are mostly small details and are changes made to add Forrest into all of the events. The movie was historically accurate and was able to show how over time in each decade had its own stepping stones. Although not any single person could have actually been at every single event illustrated in the film the possibility of it happening is the base it off the film maker made such reference to many historic events. Many people across the world are unfamiliar with disorders associated with autism. Some people do not even know what autism actually is. Asperger’s Syndrome is one perplexing disorder, of countless, that needs to be acknowledged. Although it is one of the more well-known disorders, an understanding of Asperger’s is far from common knowledge. There is an abundance of misconceptions and people unaware of what Asperger Syndrome actually is. Being uncertain about the characteristics of a person with Asperger’s allows people to go through life not understanding the disorder itself and people who have it.

...nd genuine kindness extend further than just treating the President of the United States like a normal person, even though Forrest Gump is ignorant of the ‘issues’ of different people. At the University of Alabama, two African American students are granted acceptance after an enormous ordeal on blacks going to colleges with whites because of the insane amount of racism the United States of America had. As the two African American students made their way up the staircase, one dropped a book and Forrest rushed through police officers and rioters to pick up the book and hand the book to the colored student who dropped it. Forrest’s ignorance definitely contributes to his selflessness and generosity towards people who are different (during the time period in American history the movie was based on), however, it is one of his traits that makes him a true unexpected hero.
The Movie "Forest Gump" has many underlying messages that are shown throughout the story; as told by forest Gump himself. These stories center around the main character Forrest Gump as he overcomes the struggles and hardships throughout his life; and although he might of not had the picture perfect life, he always seemed to be optimistic and prospered even in the worst of times.
