According to Michael Wilmington, a movie critic from The Chicago Tribune, “‘Forrest Gump’ may be a tale told by an idiot, but even though it's full of sound and fury-and tenderness and whimsy, horror and beauty-it doesn't, like Macbeth's mad metaphor, signify nothing”(par. 1). This lets Wilmington show that the movie has meaning behind it and does signify influential messages. Forrest Gump is one of the best comedic drama films because it gives watchers real world events that they can relate to.

An early scene in George Roy Hill’s film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) shows illustrious bandit Butch Cassidy walking into a bank and observing a series of security upgrades (e.g. an alarm system, a safe, and several different locks). As Butch Cassidy exits the establishment, he asks the security guard, “What happened to the old bank?” The guard responds, “People kept robbing it.” Butch remarks, “Small price to pay for beauty.” Although Butch Cassidy’s disappointed assertion may have been rooted in disappointment for the loss of a heist rather than the loss of architectural merit, it leads one to question: To what extent are cultural attributes lost at the expense of new technology? I will consider this question as I examine the ways in which Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid highlights the

Slavery in America has always been and always will be an emotional, sometimes even volatile, subject. The culture of the American people shows that more than any other culture, as we have enslaved millions of people simply because of the color of their skin. The subject of slavery was much debated until the 13th amendment was passed. President Abraham Lincoln made it his personal quest to get this amendment passed. In Steven Spielberg’s film, Lincoln, it showed the last months of Abraham Lincoln’s life and his will and determination to get the Thirteenth Amendment passed. In the film, Spielberg portrays the president as a charismatic voice of reason whom gets his point across with annoying personal anecdotes. While the director portrayed President

...nd genuine kindness extend further than just treating the President of the United States like a normal person, even though Forrest Gump is ignorant of the ‘issues’ of different people. At the University of Alabama, two African American students are granted acceptance after an enormous ordeal on blacks going to colleges with whites because of the insane amount of racism the United States of America had. As the two African American students made their way up the staircase, one dropped a book and Forrest rushed through police officers and rioters to pick up the book and hand the book to the colored student who dropped it. Forrest’s ignorance definitely contributes to his selflessness and generosity towards people who are different (during the time period in American history the movie was based on), however, it is one of his traits that makes him a true unexpected hero.
The film “Jonestown: The Life and Death of People’s Temple” goes beneath the surface of the infamous religious cult created by a charismatic man by the name of Jim Jones in the 1970s. He is a higher power in his own sense and makes his followers believe that he can save them. A prime example would be the incident where he gave a woman in a wheelchair the ability to walk again, but come to find out it was a mere set up. The people living in this era are in search for answers to their problems, so they turn to Jim Jones. Jim Jones brainwashes these innocent people. He tells them how they should live, but does he live that way himself? In this all-telling documentary, people who lived during the era of Jim Jones speak out about the infamous cult and the events that eventually led to the horrifying mass suicide in 1978, and even traces back to Jones’ unhappy childhood.
It is a great example of how persevering through life’s obstacles can make life even better than before. Therefore, the movie reveals that life will not always be perfect, but it is important to persevere through the adversity that it is filled with. Ultimately, no matter the circumstances, any obstacle can be
These qualities make The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald’s most influential novel. No wonder it is dubbed “The great American novel” (Yardley). From its use of characters like Daisy representing greed, Nick an observer, and Gatsby as a typical 1920’s man chasing the American dream, to its parallels to Fitzgerald’s life (Lantz) and its historical context (Caldwell). , The Great Gatsby is no doubt one of Fitzgerald’s best and most influential works. In fact, it was even adapted into films twice. The one with the most similarities and accurate representation of characters is the 1974 version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. There is more than enough proof to show that one piece of work, such as The Great Gatsby, can have an impact on so many people over many years.
The character Jenny Curran from the movie Forrest Gump, had a tough life from the very beginning of the movie throughout to the end. During the movie, most parts were assumed and not actually said. For example, as a child she was physically abused as well as sexually abuse, however, it isn’t said, a scene of her with dirty ripped clothes and older Forrest narrating says “her father was always touching and kissing her and her sister” that implies that her father was sexually abusing her. Jenny’s father was not only abusive but an alcoholic and neglected the care of Jenny. Throughout the rest of the movie, Forrest is always there to support and love her, and the detrimental decisions she makes and the different paths she endeavors, inevitably catch up with her in the end. In this essay, one of the main points we see by Jenny’s character are all of the metaphors between what she says and the advice she gives to Forrest, for example, to run from danger and her own constant behavior to fun away from whatever she is afraid of. Jenny Curran will be the focus observation and personality study. Although the main character in this film is Forrest Gump, we are able to see the trials Jenny’s incurs and how it develops her personality. The main idea of this essay is to look at Jenny’s life and find the foundation for what her personality was build on and all of the influences of change throughout her life. Her various personality and life changes will be examined as well as the environmental and social influences.
What makes a movie or a play important? The messages of course; no text will ever go without messages intertwined within the story line. Tom Stoppard is a master of this technique which is shown throughout his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. This is a play about two gentlemen who are from William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Stoppard writes this play expecting readers to know the play Hamlet extremely well; some parts of the play are even performed within Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. However, this is a play about two dead men walking; readers who know the play Hamlet know that these two men are going to die at the end of the play. This is a play where everything is a metaphor, a message, or a theme, some of which reference back to Hamlet, others refer to other things throughout history. There are specific messages that arise throughout Tom Stoppard’s play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which includes the use of language, the question of identity, and lastly the uncertainties of life and death.
