In order to be the best at what you do or as a professional you will need to acquire a certain set of abilities and skills that will guide you in the right direction. In cases like the Human Resources Sergeant Profession it takes a lot of reading, studying, time, and discipline. Besides knowledge you will need the actual experience of conducting a lot of actions, understanding what you do and why it is done that way.
Being part of the Army Profession it’s an adventure. You get to follow the steps of many men and women who have trust the system, who have help in the process of developing leaders and with their service provide security to all. These leaders have to adapt between leading Soldiers who have military character and ability or Soldiers who present themselves performing a normal daily civilian job position. They also face dealing with the reality of suicides, ill warriors and how to reward the evolution of the Army’s calling.
Like all Professions the Army also has to deal with the never ending cultural situations and its many ranks. Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Louis Moeller shaped me into the Recon Marine I wanted to be and the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) that I am now. By embodying the Recon Creed and always setting the example, he made me want to be an NCO that my troops would look up to and want to follow. Even when not in charge he was constantly the one peers and junior Marines alike, turned to for guidance and inspiration. To this day, I still find myself asking “What would Louis do?” when confronted with a leadership dilemma.
However, development starts day one with training. Therefore, the Soldiers have to be experts who have assumed the character and identity of the profession; professionalism in Soldiers enables them to perform their duties with lots of motivation and inspiration. The functions of Human Resource support four fundamental competencies: Man the Force (ex. Strength reporting), Provide HR Services (ex. Postal operations), Coordinate Personnel Support (ex. Morale, welfare, and Recreation), and Conduct HR Planning and Operations (ex. Planning and operations) in which a HR personnel must accomplish to support the mission. As a result, a professional Soldier should meet very high standards of a profession, for example character, competence, expertise and morality to fulfil their HR role. Serving in the Army for the past fifteen years, as a Soldier, Non-Commissioned Officer, Cadet, and Commissioned Officer, I have gained a wealth of military leadership knowledge and experience. Since completing my undergraduate studies and earning my commission in the Army, I have held a variety of command and staff positions. I have led Soldiers in garrison, as well as on combat and operational deployments, each having its own unique challenges and rewards. Throughout the years, I have had the distinct honor and privilege of serving on many great teams and with many outstanding Leaders.
The Human Resources Sergeant (HR Sergeant) in the profession has the responsibility to balance the role of the profession’s Human Resources Leaders and the Army professional culture. The HR Sergeant in the Professional Arms has the role of supporting the Army culture. The HR Sergeant also ensures that a balance in the leadership role is attained. All these are for the purpose of achieving one common goal of the military in defending the U.S Society.
The U.S. military is a strong force and body that protects and serves the American people. Many people support the military and some even disagree with it. What people forget is that without a military the U.S. would be totally over run by foreign countries claiming ground. My leadership can expect a top tier performer who strives to be one of the most competent Non-commissioned Officer’s within the unit. I will do this by adhering to the regulations, unit sop’s and any other guidance which governs my section. I will ensure my soldiers do the same, holding them to strict but attainable standards and expecting nothing less. I will teach, coach, counsel, and mentor these soldiers-teaching them what a leader is and grooming them to be leaders also.
The role of a human resource sergeant in the Army profession is well-defined by the non-commissioned officer (NCO) creed “we are professionals, non-commissioned officers, leaders” (SFC Earle, Brigham, 1973). We build a camaraderie in our profession that is unlike any other. Not all can say that they are experts, it requires years of training in that field to become a professional. I have always wanted to be a soldier in the United States Army. I liked the idea of serving of my country. I started at a young age trying to help my community. I volunteered to help at soup kitchens, do yard work for elderly or disabled people, and I joined the Boy Scouts and later on became a Junior leader and an Eagle Scout. This desire of helping others led me to enlist in the P.A. ARNG in March 2015. I enlisted with the intent of becoming an officer. I originally planned on going to Valley Forge Military College. In June 2013 Army Doctrine Reference Publication 1 (ADRP1) “The Army Profession” was released and the website http://cape.army.mil was created. In (ADRP1), it states there are five essential characteristics of the Army Profession, trust, military expertise, honorable service, Esprit de Corps, and stewardship (ADRP1, 2013). Those characteristics is what I think separates a Soldier from a civilian. No one should think that their job or occupation is harder or more important than someone else’s. It takes all kinds of professions to make this country work but the Army could not be as successful as it is today without our professionals teaching, coaching, mentoring and preserving these five characteristics.

Changes to the profession of the American Soldier has changed since1776 when continental congress first founded the Army. The change is due to the cultural diversity of the young people joining the Army now a days. The number of ongoing combat operations in various third world countries affects this. The Army has begun a new way of training and planning to meet the constant changes. The US Army Officer is a professional, providing expertise, leadership, and an example for his soldiers to follow. Every soldier is a subject matter expert, trained in a specific competency. Before I describe to you some of the “routine” and specific situations, investigations, and actual cases and dispositions I encountered I feel I should outline some of the training that that I received starting with the Military Police and Basic Training. Looking back I see the importance of the initial Army training that centered on physical conditioning and the discipline necessary to obey and follow orders to become part of a team.
