The U.S. military is a strong force and body that protects and serves the American people. Many people support the military and some even disagree with it. What people forget is that without a military the U.S. would be totally over run by foreign countries claiming ground. The military also helps with the nation’s economy boosting the balance of money in the works. Families have trouble with members who serve since there is always chance that they never return but it is because of their service that we are still a free country. Even though the military causes pain to families when a loved one is lost, the U.S. needs a military because with a military the economy increases and that without a military we would be invaded by a dictator or foreign …show more content…
This imposes problems on the military and even on the government. One article states that, “Reduced budgets and the threat of sequestration create a sense of uneasiness in the ranks, and those fears are fueled by politicians willing to shut down the federal government rather than compromise.” (Army Magazine) This is because with the increase of budget cuts they start to cause problems for the ones who are working and this creates lost jobs in the military. No one wants to lose their job not even the ones that have put forth a great amount of time and effort in the military. For the ones that have been in the military for a long period of time this can actually have negative effects on their life style and even cause problems when returning …show more content…
There has always been a differential between civilian income and military and this has only just happened in the past six years. (Army Magazine) This has allowed those who have joined the military to have that pay increase since they are giving more or less their own lives to protect their country. This allows them to realize that they are on a different level than most and gives them the responsibility of that. It is with the military though that the government can increase the economy even providing jobs. (Military Spending Can Grow the Nation’s Economy) This even allows civilians to find jobs in the military and contract out. So the military has also given back to the civilian
No matter how important our troops are to the people of America, President Obama is cutting the benefits for our military veterans. ”President Obama put his signature on the two-year budget bill, which includes a contentious provision to pare down annual cost of living increases in benefits for military retirees under age 62, saving the government an estimated $6.3 billion over a decade”(lawmakers, veterans groups push to restore military benefits 1).
Military spending should decrease because they are spending more money in defense then in us. “ Never underestimate the effects of cheap products and mediocre service on cost.” (Tierney 2) defense spending affects the country and the people. Spending less in product have more affect in products that cost more. You can spend in billion dollar rocket compare to a thousand dollar rocket and have the same impact and power. The result in high contractor turn over rates, which will drive poor performance and higher costs. Our government spends about 1 trillion of dollars per year in defense security programs. The U.S spends 54% of the money for military purposes. Overall its good to spend that much to keep us safe but you won’t be protecting nobody if we are all dead, for not supporting us. Whenever threats
"The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country” (-General George S. Patton Jr). Here within our borders we are the lucky ones, we have been blessed with the pleasure of so many brave men and women; to volunteer in the world's greatest military; and put their lives on the line for something that they believe is a moral obligation. But, think of some other countries, that have conscription (the practice of ordering people by law to serve in the armed forces) laws. We as a nation have some laws on conscription, and if you are male and above the age of 18 you have already signed the slip of paper stating that in the time of war; if our great nation re-instated the draft then there is a great chance you will be serving on the frontline of the next Great War. This brings me to my first topic of this page, is it ethical to have a draft? My second topic that I will discuss will be on if it is morally acceptable to "draft dodge". What I mean on the second topic is if you have a right; that morally allows you to not go fight in the war.
Will the security of our nation be compromised? Will U.S. enemies take it as a chance to land a brutal blow against America? Yes, these things will happen. However, they will only happen if the military budget is decreased too much, or if funds are not used appropriately. For instance, maybe the U.S. needs to invest less of its resources into meddling into foreign affairs. At some point, America became the terrorists in the “War on Terror.” Undoubtedly, America has the strongest and best-trained military on the planet. Mainly because of how many resources we’ve invested in building it. Granted, this great country will not falter with some military budget cuts here and there. Instead, it can take those funds and invest them into the leaders and workforce of tomorrow and brighten its
A great man by the name of Thomas Jefferson once said, “Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state.” Thomas Jefferson was a very intelligent man and would not have said something like this if he had no logic or reasoning behind it. Personally, I do not completely agree with this specific statement that he made. I agree that during the times of the Greek and Roman Empire that every citizen was a soldier, but I don’t think it needs to be that way now. Even though there are American forces attending to crises across the globe, I do not think that the United States needs a severe more amount of soldiers in its military. I do not believe that the United states should increase the size of the military by reinstating the mandatory draft because there are enough citizens that volunteer as it is, there is no war currently going on that requires more soldiers, and because many of the young men that got drafted couldn’t handle the mental part of being in a war.
The United States currently has a national debt of over $19 trillion dollars, with that figure steadily increasing at a rate of about $1 trillion every year since 2012. As a result, the defense spending budget for America has been a widely discussed topic as we seem to have lost control of our spending. For instance, before the attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States had spent an average of $280 billion each year on its Defense Budget. Following the attacks, however, that number has soared and the expected budget for the fiscal year 2017 was estimated to be upwards of $850 billion (Otto 2015). That increased spending was justified by many due to America’s level of involvement in conflicts both in Iraq and Afghanistan that have spanned the last decade. However, as wars have slowly come to a halt for the United States, the need to regain control of our spending has become apparent.
Of 2015, 6% of $1.15 trillion, or $66 billion, was designated for medicare and health. The reason for this budget change is because by increasing the budget, people will be taken care of. Before former President Obama’s proposal for Obamacare, many people struggled to afford medical care, since they weren’t able to pay for their bills. An increase in the medicare and health budget allows people to be able to afford their bills, and no longer will they be swimming in medical bills of thousands of dollars. In conclusion, the military budget should be decreased for other areas, such as education and medicare and health. By increasing the budget for education and medicare and health, people will be able to strive in the country and will not struggle to afford health care for themselves and their
Military services often force a man to forfeit property that he would be able to keep if it wasn’t for being drafted. Usually they give it up because if they are drafted for way they won’t be around to provide upkeep for it, defend it from damage, or defend it from theft by other people. The land that they could have for the rest of their lives is being taken away from them because they are drafted to war. Military duty also makes people unavailable for jobs, and employment opportunities which could be the result of their land being taken away. If they aren’t ever around to work and make money, then there is no way that they can pay for their land they own, so eventually their land gets taken away. Imagine the effect that military service could have on an owner of a small business. If he is the owner he has to be around all the time to keep the place in line and make sure things are going well around the business. If he has to leave for full-time military service there is a huge chance that they will lose their business. When a man is forced into military service by draft, he could lose more than his life or his liberty, he could also lose his land or
When a young man or women decide to enlist in the United States Military they know they are putting their lives on the line for their country and there is a possibility they will not come home. Typically, when a man or women is stationed in a different country, they stay there for 6-18 months depending on the assigned mission. After people in the military retire, they get a certain amount of money and benefit depending on their rank. With the benefits and money in place one might think a veteran will live a comfortable life. However, veterans have a significant chance at becoming homeless due to low socioeconomic status and mental health disorders.
We all know that the US spends the biggest amount of money on the military because of terrorism and wanting to be strategically ahead of all the other countries. They are just trying to protect our country from being attacked again especially after Pearl Harbor and 9/11. But maybe the military has gone a bit too far in some instances, like underwater sonar testing. The Navy was just renewed permits to conduct exercises in an extensive area in the Pacific Ocean. The training and testing range stretches from Northern California to the Canadian border. The navy claims “many adversaries have and continue to acquire modern, quiet subs, torpedoes, and underwater mines that pose serious threats to the lawful use of the sea, the global economy, and the safety of our forces”, which is why the navy needs to be able to have real life practice out in the ocean. The navy did think about the animals in the area and are practicing routines to protect animals, “such as using trained lookouts to avoid marine mammals or halting sonar if marine mammals approach our ships within certain safety zones.” But the percentage of "Visual detection can miss anywhere from 25 to 95 percent of the marine mammals in an area," says Heather Trim, Director of Policy for People for Puget
I agree that it is great that many military jobs are available to help employ Americans that really need jobs, however, that same money investing in the military could have created twice as many jobs in education or healthcare as in the military. Furthermore, military jobs do not result in useful actions. For instance, millions of people are unemployed and homeless while billions of dollars are spent to fuel, tanks, planes, ships, and to recruit and train young men and women, who may die in wars. Trained engineers and scientists are using their knowledge, to created weapons of destructions rather than using it to improve the lives of many. To add on, taxpayers pay to clean up the mess created by our
In the first twelve months, a person can expect to receive, after possibly paying a negligible fee, eligibility for the Montgomery GI Bill or the Post 9-11 GI Bill for education benefits, completely removing most, if not all, of the monetary responsibility from the individual (Official GI Bill Website). Not to mention, while they are on active duty there are tuition benefits that may pay for most, if not all, of one’s active duty education. No matter what an individual or his/her family’s financial status, additional funding can only prove beneficial. In fact, it lends the individual integrity as he/she has taken responsibility for their own education, effectively taking the pressure off of their families. It won’t become a financial burden on the government because not everyone will be in the military at the same time. Further still, the people enlisted mandatorily will be discharged after, no longer than, four years. This leaves room for those who enlisted voluntarily to continue on merrily in their military careers.
The mechanism of sequestration has and will reduce the country’s ability to efficiently manage the Army’s personnel requirements. As the Army reduces its personnel they should look at contractor levels and adjust them accordingly. The Army should reduce their reliance on contractor support personnel and increase the size of the Military to the appropriate personnel levels so that it can conduct and perform all of its missions. The increase in contractor numbers, though logical should not have occurred at the expense of the Military service member.
Saving money by decreasing spending on military defenses would help out a lot in the U.S. If the U.S. military were to save money, it’d be best to use that money on schools, hospitals, and poor communities or cities. Helping schools would be big, maybe even causing a higher percentage in graduation. Providing students with more advanced or smarter ways to learn would outcome in giving thus student a better chance to succeed. This may even cause more students to attend school and this would bring a better lifestyle (career wise) to those who strive for achieving in life. Money being used on hospitals would be outstandingly helpful. Better technology, more doctors, and more suitable ways to prevent sickness would benefit from saving lives. All this would be a big help those in need. Poor cities or communities that often get destroyed by natural disasters are in need of money and help. Giving to those communities would be a help to those
Military spending both can have positive and negative effects on the economy. “Government military spending during conflict does create more employment, economic activity, and new technologies resulting in a higher GDP, except the Afghanistan and Iraq war with its estimated cost of $1.4 trillion.” (thereformed broker.com). Most of the time, these benefits are short term. The most negative impact of war is that it creates the loss of humanity, and increases taxes for the taxpayer. Changes in economics occur during conflict they are; public debt and taxations, inflation, stock market valuations, economic consumption and investment.
