In the United States altogether people own 88.3 million cats. However not all of those cats are safe from declawing. An unacceptable practice. ‘Why’ you may ask. Well, for starters it’s harmful, also it isn't always a necessity, and there are other options. So, why do people still do it? “Cats wake up from the pain medication, and they're not crying or acting crazy,” Dr. James Nelson said. “They’re fine.” Although they may be fine when they wake up from a medically induced sleep, how will it effect them later on? Goode, a volunteer at Only Hope Cat Rescue, said she had cared for a cat that had been declawed on all four paws. Goode noted that “the cat would lash out and had a difficult time using the litter box because its feet hurt.” Is this …show more content…
Some people might say that “declawing is better than relinquishment.” Although that is true in some circumstances, I feel that people who are worried about their children and furniture getting scratched, shouldn’t have a cat. Cats need their claws for self defense and protection. Also scratching is a normal feline behavior, so instead of spending 100-250$ on a procedure that won’t effect the cat’s behavior positively owners can buy scratching posts and things like that for 20$ (and up). “A scratch from a cat can cause someone to get sick or infected,” some people may argue. Although there are other effective options to try before going straight to declawing. “Cat owners should frequently trim their cats' nails, and veterinarians can also place nail caps on to minimize damage,” Johnson said. If someone is worried about their cat hurting someone or something they can always bring them to a no kill shelter, where someone else can give that cat love and affection instead of cutting off the tips of its ‘fingers”. In conclusion cat declawing is an inhuman practice for many reasons. After hearing my opinion on cat declawing, you might want to think more carefully about declawing your cat. Next time you aren't sure about what to do, whether it’s declawing your cat or even voting, educate yourself
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
For many cat owners, their cat’s impulse to scratch can become a disastrous problem. Cat owners believe that the only logical solution is to have the cat declawed. It’s natural for cats to scratch and use their our claws to live their daily lives. Cats use their claws to play, climb, and in many situations as a form of self-defense. So the question that presents itself, is it really necessary for cat owners to have cats declawed. The only problem with declawing cats is that it is unnecessary and inhumane mutilation. Many cat owners should be more aware take advantage of the other safer and more humane alternatives for their cats.
The definition of grit is simple; it means being passionate about long term goals, and showing stamina to pursue them, but should students in public schools have a class dedicated to a grit-focused curriculum? This has become a major topic of discussion among teachers and mentors. Angela Duckworth, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, claims grit is not a fixed quality but one that can be developed. Many disagree with her statement. Grit is something everyone all have within themselves, but some just do not utilize this characteristic as often or as well as others. Grit is a puzzling concept. Duckworth has had an obsession with grit for over a decade. Her obsession started when she visited West Point,
In America, knives, forks, and spoons are necessary tools people have in order to function properly everyday. Without cutlery, people would continue to eat with their dirty, bacteria covered hands, slurping and licking their way through their meals. People would drink bowls of hot soup, maul steak like a feral dog stealing his first bone in weeks, and scoop large chunks of ice cream with frostbitten fingers. Like most individuals in the world, I never put too much thought into how important a spoon was until I needed it. I especially did not care where my family’s flatware came from or how they were created, as long as it was in the cabinet when I wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. Unfortunately, no one cares about a spoon, a fork, or
“The Wicked and the Just” by Jillian Anderson Coats, a novel filled with historical hardships, and bitter realities, all glued together with an unique manipulative twist. Despite the tragic story being told by the book, it was all spiced up with the author’s extraordinary way of structuring the plot. Dual narrative, also known as “split” narrative is the technique that Coats decided to use, because there are some specific purposes of why he chose to do so. After the beginning chapter, we are led to a special section in the book where words are printed in Italic. It’s seems like a new chapter in the book, but somehow the narrative voice changes to a whole different tone, not bratty anymore, but seems little hateful. It mights be confusing for a reader who first time experience book written in “split” narrative voice, but it’s also a strangely vibrant experience. The purpose of Coats “split”
“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature”. From the beginning of time man and nature has been in conflict with one another because, as a whole, there is no cooperating. Each one tirelessly wants its way. The Man is fighting for dominance and nature w never yielding its authority. In American Literature, many authors illustrate this theme in their writing. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
Every day, more and more attempts of banning books and taking away the rights of our First Amendment get violated. The challenging of a book is the attempt to remove or restrict materials, and the banning is the removal of these materials. I believe that books should not be banned for these reasons.
Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Animal cruelty comes in several forms, some of which people do not know. There is animal experimenting, animal abuse, and mistreatment of animals. and through revealing the results from research, one discovers the horrific effects of animal abuse.
What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". In order to be a good person, you have to do good and moral things in your society consistently. However people might think that by doing one good thing once in a while will automatically make you a “good person”, but in reality it doesn’t.
SpayUSA says that the benefits of spaying include no heat cycles, less desire to roam, risk of mammary gland tumors, ovarian and/or uterine cancer is reduced or eliminated, especially if done before the first heat cycle, reduces the number of unwanted cats, and helps cats live longer, healthier lives. Not only are many health issues reduced, but the overpopulation decreases dramatically. Those 66,088 cats are reduced even if only by a little bit. SpayUSA also says that the benefits of neutering reduces or eliminates risk of spraying, less desire to roam, therefore less likely to be injured in fights or auto accidents, risk of testicular cancer is eliminated, and decreases incidence of prostate disease, reduces the number or unwanted cats, decreases aggressive behavior, and helps cats live longer, healthier lives. This means less homeless cats walk around injured or lay dead on the side of the road. In short, if people fixed their cats, many problems could be greatly reduced.
Cats are natural born hunters. A 2013 study revealed that each year, domestic cats kill 20.7 billion smaller animals, including mice, chipmunks, voles and 3.7 billion birds. Cats are actually the number one killer of these animals. Cats spend one-third of their day just killing animals, and they don’t even do it because they’re hungry. They do it because they feel like it.
When you talk to pet owners about owning a cat versus a dog, it stirs up much controver-sy in many ways. By looking at both cats and dogs, the cat outweighs the dog in many ways, which makes the cat the superior selection when making a final decision on which one to get. Cats have very desirable qualities that make them an award winning choice to many owners. The qualities that appeal to most are the ability of the cat to live in small spaces, they do not eat large amounts of food for their meals, and they are very sedentary and independent in nature making them a low maintenance pet. One additional desired feature is cats are well suited for owners that have a very busy lifestyle and minimal time to give to their pet. This added feature
The myths that spaying and neutering is cruel, will change the animal’s personality, or will make the pet fat are not true. Spaying and neutering will give a pet a longer and healthier life. The risk of breast cancer in females, and testicular cancer in males is greatly reduced. Females will also no longer have messy heat cycles, and will not attract males. In males, the urge to roam and mark territory is eliminated. Some people would say that they do not want to give their pet an unnecessary, risky surgery. If this surgery is done when the animal is young and healthy, it is almost completely safe. The consequences of not getting this done are much riskier. The urge that males have to wander away from home can put them in very dangerous situations, such as getting ran over by cars or fighting with other males. For females, giving birth is a very risky
We all are busy people who are out of the house most of the day. We need a companion to help us ease the stress from daily life. For example, if you are purr-catinating on essays or preparing for speeches late at night, you at least have a companion by your side. A great companion is the cat, you get to pet a fluffy thing and get free scratches. Why cats? Well, cats are purr-ty interesting creatures. According to Discovery News, in 1960s, the CIA tried to turn a cat into a spy, but un-fur-tunately, they failed when the cat was ran over by a cab. Another interesting fact according to Buzzfeed is female cats are typically right-pawed while male cats are typically left-pawed. There is also a cat island named Tashirojima that are terrorized by stray cats in Japan. The main problem is there are too many cats in the shelters that need a home, according to ASPCA, approximately 3.4 million cats enter the shelters every year. Well the solution to this is you can adopt a cat. There are a few things you need to do before adopting a cat.
For many years, animals have been wonderful additions to families around the world and have changed the lives of people in many ways. They are usually welcomed and loved immediately. That isn’t always the case though. Sometimes there are various people who start punishing their pets for anything that happens to themselves. The main reason for why people hurt animals is because they don 't often think about what they are doing.
