For many cat owners, their cat’s impulse to scratch can become a disastrous problem. Cat owners believe that the only logical solution is to have the cat declawed. It’s natural for cats to scratch and use their our claws to live their daily lives. Cats use their claws to play, climb, and in many situations as a form of self-defense. So the question that presents itself, is it really necessary for cat owners to have cats declawed. The only problem with declawing cats is that it is unnecessary and inhumane mutilation. Many cat owners should be more aware take advantage of the other safer and more humane alternatives for their cats.
To some people, declawing is known as a simple and minor procedure. Declawing is much more complex than just clipping their toenails. It’s actually an invasive surgery known as feline onychectomy (PETA). The problem is that declawing a cat is basically another form of mutilation. declawing leads to the removal of a cats bones in their feet which then leads the cats to have less than the paw they were

born with. There are more compassionate alternatives to take into consideration. For instance, cat owners can trim their cat’s nails regularly. It’s a rather simple to do. When the cat is relaxed, press the toes until the claws extend, then just trim the carefully claws. Like any animal, cats can be trained. Another alternative is to have the cat trained to use a scratching post when they have the urge to scratch (PETA). While training a cat it’s good to build up a relationship with them. There is also another nice alternative. It’s important for cat owners to discourage certain behaviors. Some cat owners should consider using a spray bottle with water, so whenever the cat’s scratching is unnecessary the owners are making it clear that the cats shouldn’t be scratching. There are products such as nylon tips which cover the claws and reduce the need for frequent trimming. An adhesive is used to attach a plastic cap over each claw. In using nylon tips it proves to be a great alternative. In addition, the nylon tips last up to six weeks. Another great thing about the tips is that they are also nontoxic so it isn’t harmful to the cat in any way. Further more, the tips still allow the cat to use their claws on a daily basis, but prevent the painful scratches. Taking these alternatives into consideration, can have benefits for both the cat and the owner. Therefore, cats can still use their claws to exercise, play, stretch, climb, hunt, and live their daily lives. There are so many other ways to guide your cat healthily use their claws for daily activities. Not only does declawing effect a cat anatomically, but the procedure can also affect them both physically and psychologically. In the event that declawing takes place, the cat’s ability to walk will be an adjustment. The consequence of removing the claw changes the way a cat’s foot meets the ground (Andee Bingham). Therefore, cats who are declawed must have to re-learn how to walk with their new paws resulting in bone spurs and nerve damage. Feline onychectomy can cause unnecessary trauma after the for a cat. So, in result, cats may become extremely timid or unusually aggressive As a result, cat’s primary defense no longer exists, so a cat will often resort to biting. Declawing is definitely not the answer. Many people will argue that cats should be declawed, but is it really beneficial to both the cat and the pet owner?
Declawing solves the issue of torn up furniture and unnecessary scratches. Having a cat declawed puts an end to ruined furniture, torn up carpet, and having the household look a wreck. If that’s a pet owners concern, then they should definitely reconsider even having a cat. A cat's claws can inflict a considerable amount of pain and damage to their owners. Cat scratch disease may also be a result of having a cat declawed. This disease is caused by a bacteria known as Bartonella henselae. Statistics show that About 40% of cats have this bacteria at some point in their cat lives. This bacterial infection shows no signs in a cat. Kittens are also more likely to scratch and bite while they play with their owners. Although, your cat might use your hands or furniture for clawing and scratch, declawing is certainly not the
answer. Declawing is viewed as a “cosmetic” procedure rather than a must. Think about it, to whom is it really beneficial for? Is it for the owner’s sake or for the cat’s? Sure, the cat is wrecking everything up and causing painful scratches. Pet owners should know what they are getting into when bringing a cat home. If a cat owner’s main concern is something as superficial as torn up furniture, they should definitely reconsider the choice of getting a cat. According to an article in New York Times, “cat declawing, or onychectomy, like any surgery, should only be the last resort, that is, when not doing so is worse and could lead to the cat’s death” (Alan M. Beck). The only time declawing seems plausible is whenIn some cases, claw could be damaged or the cat can have a tumor. In cases like this, it may be more beneficial to remove the claw. Unfortunately, cats feel an cats immense amount of pain even long after their paws are healed. Feline onychectomy can lead to health issues such as lameness, back pain, and necrosis of the tissues in their paws. In Cat Time, A cat’s paws will be in unsterile areas such as a litter box, most likely, the wounds around the surgical area will become infected (Andee Bingham). When a cat is declawed it does not only take the happiness out of a kitten’s life, but it also can affect a cat emotionally, physically and anatomically. It can decrease your cat’s ability to function and move. Using claws is a natural form of self defense for a cat, even an indoor one. Further more, declawing won’t always slove everything. Think of declawing as cutting a person’s fingers off right to the knuckle because thats basically what happens then cats get declawed. Now that you think of it, is that really humane?
Conformity, the act of changing to fit in. Conformity can completely change a person whether it be their looks, such as their the way they dress, or their personality, like the way they act around certain people. In The Sociology of Leopard Man Logan Feys argues that being human has a right to it, and that right is to be who you are. Society pushes out certain people for not fitting in with everyone else, but also says that nobody should fit in, because everyone has a different personality.
We want to keep our animals and pets healthy as wells as other ones too. We can help to stop this happening by spaying and neutering our pets. Works Cited ASPCA. “Top 10 Reasons to Spay and Neuter Your Pet.” www.aspca.org.
In many cases Savannah cats are known for being cute, furry and cuddlable but we need to respect them in their natural behavior tendencies to provide them a suitable stimulating environment. Animals are precious, loving, and sweet creatures but many are having their lives cut short. Did you know that 7.6 million animals enter shelters every year? Of those animals, thirty one percent of dogs are euthanized and forty one percent of cats are euthanized. If you do the math, that is 2.4 million dogs and 3.1 million cats. Why are we doing this to our animals? They're living creatures just like us, even if they can't tell us. As you read this paper, you'll learn about what euthanization is, learn the reasons for shelters killing our furry friends, and get an inside look at the terrible practice of euthanization.
Aggression directed toward owners is not a unique occurrence, and it is one that causes an emotional struggle between owner and pet. Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Animal cruelty comes in several forms, some of which people do not know. Cats are natural born hunters. A 2013 study revealed that each year, domestic cats kill 20.7 billion smaller animals, including mice, chipmunks, voles and 3.7 billion birds. Cats are actually the number one killer of these animals. Cats spend one-third of their day just killing animals, and they don’t even do it because they’re hungry. They do it because they feel like it.

Stray animals are dangerous reason being is children or elderly people can be bit while walking or playing around at parks. I live in Mercedes and at one point when I was walking from stars to the high school, and stray dog for no reason started growing at me and my instinct was to run until I got the a building. This can happen to anyone, they can be attacked trying to touch a stray or just simply walking by, or even worse a child can catch a disease. Also owners with their pets are also getting attacked by stray animals because they strays tend to be over protective of their territory, or they just want to fight with the pet of the owner.
