In America, knives, forks, and spoons are necessary tools people have in order to function properly everyday. Without cutlery, people would continue to eat with their dirty, bacteria covered hands, slurping and licking their way through their meals. People would drink bowls of hot soup, maul steak like a feral dog stealing his first bone in weeks, and scoop large chunks of ice cream with frostbitten fingers. Like most individuals in the world, I never put too much thought into how important a spoon was until I needed it. I especially did not care where my family’s flatware came from or how they were created, as long as it was in the cabinet when I wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. Unfortunately, no one cares about a spoon, a fork, or …show more content…
a knife. As a society, we have become so dependent on these basic tools to the point that they are just second nature. Like the young couple who are newly married and have move into there brand spanking new home, and expect that these utensils are just supposed to suddenly magically appear in the kitchen drawer. In reality, the flatware will not be there because they forgot to get some, and they will be forced to order takeout till death due them part. It is my job a sales representative for Vector, the marketing company for Cutco, to make sure these problems do not arise for people like that young couple and others. For work, I make appointments to inform people about cutlery. It is my job to make people healthier, and more efficient by making their lives safer and easier with great cutlery. Many people unknowingly have a drawer full of knives that do not work. Surprisingly, those same household knives are actually engineered to dull or break after a year or two because of manufacturing. As a result, majority of the time people end up spending a lot of money just to replace their knives repeatedly. It was not until recently that I came to understand the difference between knives. Whether it is a good knife or a poor knife it is due to the anatomy that determines it. In order to distinguished a knife we must know the body of one: the handle. First, you have the old-fashioned Wooden Handle. You could probably find this at your Grandparents house and see them using it to chop some freaky fruitcake at Christmas. I will admit they are attractive when new, but over time, they crack, break, splinter and fade. Wooden handles are just plan ol’disgusting and unsanitary, since wood absorbs grease, bacteria and other smelly odors. Then there is the Low Grade Plastic Handles you see every single time peering out your eye, screaming obnoxiously that you are in the cooking section of Macy’s when you quickly walk by. They are more appealing to the eyes and sanitary, but they are usually glued on, so they often loosen or come apart. In addition, they are the most dangerous kind of handle, when wet they become very slippery. Furthermore, we have the Construction Handle that contains a partial tang (steel handle). However, partial tangs can easily break or and wobble. This causes them to be extremely dangerous. Now onto the shiny part, steel blades. The blade to a knife is like the abdomen/head to a bee. You just have to have it. Blades that contain Carbon Steel stay very sharp for a very, very long time. You do not come across them to often, because they easily rust and corrode. Moreover, who would want to buy a rusty knife? Thus, they are very unsanitary and less popular. Whereas the more modern of the two that I see on every Lowe’s and Home Depot store catalog page imaginable is Stainless Steel. They resist corroding, but can easily bend and break. To wrap it all together the teeth of a knife’s antimony is the Saw Edge (Serrated), it stays sharp longer than a straight edge. However, they rip and tear at food, and strangely enough, they can Never be re-sharpened. While the Straight Edge, makes a clean cut, but it have to be constantly re-sharpened Surprisingly, dull knives are the number one cause of kitchen accidents, due to constant friction with tough surfaces. This means that people are simply too lazy to sharpen their knives or ignorant that they must. In addition, statistically most people own their knives for 10-15 years. Meaning that people end up using unsafe and unsanitary tools, because of this reason this is how my company Cutco manages to solve these problems. Cutco knives uses a one of a kind design created by Thomas Lamb, an industrial designer, called the Universal Wedge Lock Handle, who had studied over 700 pairs of hands. Any hand that you can imagine ranging: large, small, medium, right, and left will fit this perfect handle. This type of handle is perfect for arthritis suffers; it allows cutting to be more comfortable and reduces hand fatigue. In addition, the handle is made out of a tough material that will not crack, break, and splinter called thermo-resin. It is completely sanitary, so sweet old grandmas and bored stay at home mothers do not have to deal with those nasty odors, moisture and bacteria getting in. In fact, it is the best possible playmate for dishwashers and detergents. There is even a full tang triple rivet construction, for that extra strength and balance. With the best of both worlds, Cutco knives abdomens contain high carbon-stainless steel. It stays sharp longer than any other steel and does not rust or corrode. Additionally, it has the ideal steel for cutlery: 440-A steel. Cutco’s edges are unlike any other edge, it is not serrated, so they do not rip and tear at your food. It has three edges that do different jobs. One cuts forward, one cuts backward, and the other cuts straight down. It cuts faster, cleaner, easier and finer than any other edge. Moreover, Cutco is an amazing company that does amazing things.
Established in 1949,Cutco is proud of their American roots in up-state Olean, New York. Personally, I like to help people and make their lives better in someway. One of the major reasons I had joined Vector was because of Cutco’s philosophy of aiding others, by giving back to their customers through providing the best possible deals imaginable. For instance, their Forever Guarantee, that actually last forever. If anything were to happen to your Cutco, you could send it back to the factory and the company would fix or replace it free. If at any instance a tool in your set needed to be sharpened, you just need to pay for shipping and it will be sharper and shinier than ever. If you damage your tools through misuse, it will be replaced with a brand new one for only half the retail price. Lastly, there is the fifteen-day trial or what I like to think of it as “the Intelligent Thinker’s Guarantee”, when you the customer get to experience Cutco for half a month. If for any reason at all that you are not satisfied with your Cutco, you can send it back for a full refund. I have never heard of a company that has deals lasting for an eternity. This deal is unparalleled to other
companies. There is a whole world out there about cutlery. However, most people do not take the time to grasp a better understanding, yet, it is just as important to know your knives, as it is to visit the doctors. During my time at Vector, the marketing company for Cutco, I have learned many things: confidence, public speaking, leadership, organizational skills, business tactics, and manufacturing cutlery. Most importantly, I now know the difference between a good knife and a low quality knife. If you do not want your knives to suck, give me a ring!
Last, Americans have no food traditions or universal culture on which they can fall. In many countries, there are food customs that are passed from one generation to the next. Because America is a melting pot of cultures, it does not have a single food custom that we all share. Without the guidance of a single food culture, Americans find themselves lost on which food nourishes and which harm. Pollan gives an example of the French benefiting from food customs.

Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. There are so many different aspects of the agriculture industry that many people never think twice about. Most people are not interested in agriculture because they think it is just about farming or
Football is a dangerous sport, in fact, retired NFL players are 19 time more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease of any other similar memory loss diseases, found by a recent study by the university of Michigan. CTE a disease that Acura as a result of constant head injuries and contact, and has been growing rapidly in the NFL. The NFL has been denied giving the many claims that CTE has a direct connection with professional football, until recently. The NFL has been taken to court multiple times over the topic of CTE. Although the National Football League is preparing to settle a class-action lawsuit with players with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the League should do more for players because not only has it profited from
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
The definition of grit is simple; it means being passionate about long term goals, and showing stamina to pursue them, but should students in public schools have a class dedicated to a grit-focused curriculum? This has become a major topic of discussion among teachers and mentors. Angela Duckworth, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, claims grit is not a fixed quality but one that can be developed. Many disagree with her statement. Grit is something everyone all have within themselves, but some just do not utilize this characteristic as often or as well as others. Grit is a puzzling concept. Duckworth has had an obsession with grit for over a decade. Her obsession started when she visited West Point,
With over 100 million users, 400 million snapchats sent daily, and 8,796 snapchats sent per second, Snapchat has been made into a multibillion dollar franchise. Snapchat was not meant to be turned into what it has become today. Snapchat, initially called Picaboo, was launched in Evan Spiegel’s dorm room. Spiegel started Picaboo as a school project at Stanford with his peers Robert Murphy and Reggie Brown. It was created to have the ability to send an image and have that same image permanently deleted. When Picaboo was first released it was not able to attract any users. However, today Snapchat is one of the most downloaded applications in the world.
According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, “The average American trashes 10 times as much food as a consumer in South east Asia” (Hsu). That is about equivalent to eating 10 meals to a consumer in South East Asia’s one meal. We throw away our left over food just because we are done ea... ... middle of paper ... ... ff every month you have to pay interest, which is a waste of money because you paying extra for that money you spent.
... is important. But now that we have done so, it is even more important that we take steps to change what is happening. That’s why the recent focus on being healthy rather than thin and campaigns like the Dove Beauty Campaign where women are encouraged to see the beauty in how they currently are so monumental to changing what Americans value. Even though Counihan wrote this article eighteen years ago, it still has applications today. I do question her study methods. Using a small sample of food journals from students being taught to think anthropologically could skew results. I would be very interested to see a larger study done today, especially with some progress being made in the adaptation of America’s values.
Over the past century, fast food restaurants have been booming. Chains of restaurants such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Rally’s, Taco Bell, and Burger King have revolutionized society with fast, inexpensive, tasty foods that can be ordered across the country. With these new eateries, plastic utensils have also gained popularity. The drive-up window makes metal utensils obsolete. Customers would drive away with millions of dollars in silverware each year nationwide. Plastic provides cheap, acceptably durable alternatives to the traditional metal forks, spoons, and knives.
“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature”. From the beginning of time man and nature has been in conflict with one another because, as a whole, there is no cooperating. Each one tirelessly wants its way. The Man is fighting for dominance and nature w never yielding its authority. In American Literature, many authors illustrate this theme in their writing. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
Every day, more and more attempts of banning books and taking away the rights of our First Amendment get violated. The challenging of a book is the attempt to remove or restrict materials, and the banning is the removal of these materials. I believe that books should not be banned for these reasons.
After the Civil War ended between the North and South there were many questions left to be answered. Likely one of the biggest questions looming over people was what would happen to the Southern states that had rebelled against the North? People had many different opinions on how reconstruction should go and how harshly the South should be punished, if even punished at all. Some people like William Grosvenor felt that consequences for the South should be severe (Dudley 7). Mr. Grosvenor was an abolitionist pre-Civil War and went on to be a commander of one of the original African American units of soldiers during the war (Dudley 7). Plenty of grudge holding Northerners had the same opinion as William Grosvenor, but some felt that the South
Every morning when I wake up the first thought in my mind is usually: FOOD! I often lie in bed for a few extra minutes, planning out what I am going to eat for breakfast. Seldom as I go through this routine do I stop to think about those who are less fortunate than me. I often take for granted that everyone wakes up and eats breakfast. But this is far from true, not everyone shares the luxuries that we have in the United States. Some people wake up and wonder if they will eat at all that day, let alone eat breakfast. Why? Because food, like many other things, is unequally distributed throughout the world.
Every person in America is guilty of this almost daily in some way or another, and that is wasting food by either letting it rot in your refrigerator, taking too much at dinner and throwing what is left into the garbage for some varmint to rummage through later, or even in the production process by throwing away a perfectly good potato because it doesn’t meet the size requirement for processing. In America, it’s something we don’t think about; rather it’s just a habit that causes us to lose money on that wasted food. Something we seem to forget about, however, is the fact that there are starving people in other parts of the world that could have benefitted from that. Contrariwise, American’s are not the only ones that can be accused of this heinous habit, because the rest of the world is just as bad at it. Food loss and food waste is a global problem that needs to be reduced to not only benefit people financially and protect the environment, but attempt to solve the food security equation.
