This is what some individuals experience almost every night, a visit from the infamous beings known as Shadow People. Every year when the temperature starts dropping and the leaves begin to get crisp, many ghostly tales resurface themselves for another round of terrifying anyone who is unfortunate enough to be in earshot of their horror. Many nightmares, uneasy looks into the dark, and scary reflections could be avoided if this simple question was answered: is the existence of the paranormal just a figment of the human psyche, or is there significant evidence that proves otherwise? The answer is no. There is not any proof that any such “undead” walk among us. This can be disproved by debunking some of the bogus evidence out there, examining some of the most common “paranormal activities,” and understanding the sensory part of our brain that triggers these fears.
Ged, the main character in The Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula K. LeGuin, through an act of pride and spite unwittingly unleashes a powerful shadow creature on the world, and the shadow hunts Ged wherever he goes. After failing to kill Ged the first time, he learns the only way to destroy the shadow is to find its name. What Ged must realize is the shadow was created by the evil in his own heart. Also, the shadow is not entirely evil, and Ged can actually draw strength from it. In doing so, Ged will realize that the only way to discover the shadow’s name is to discover that he and the shadow are one. Carl G. Jung in Man and His Symbols, describes the shadow as containing the hidden, repressed, and unfavorable “tendencies” of the conscious personality. “Such tendencies form an ever-present and potentially destructive ‘shadow’ to our conscious mind.”

Parapsychology is the scientific study of interactions between living organisms and their external environment that seem to transcend the known physical laws of nature. To clear up the last sentence, a poltergeist is a ghost or other supernatural being supposedly responsible for physical disturbances such as loud noises and objects thrown around. My Sisters Shadow follows the lives of Joan and Laurie Connor. Since childhood, Joan had always felt inferior to her sister. Joan sensed her sister Laurie was their father’s favorite daughter, and this was affirmed the night he committed suicide. A hate crime is a crime motivated by several reasons that include religion, sexual orientation, race, nationality, gender etc. It typically involves physical violence, intimidation, threats and other means against the individual that is being targeted. It is a crime against the person and it can have a devastating impact on the victim. Several argue that hate crimes should be punished more severely. However, it is not a crime to hate someone or something if it does not lead to some sort of criminal offense.

Ursula Le Guin, a fantasy writer, starts off with a short story she remembered from her childhood, written by Christian Anderson. A story about a man who's too self conscious to go and talk to a beauteous lady across the street; jokingly he tells his shadow, made by a candle, to go into her house for him. Of course, this being fantasy, the shadow leaves the man behind and does so; the man was to never detect his shadow again until many years has passed. The Shadow is now with a princess and they admit planned to marry one another, the man who is now angry goes off on them both, causing him to be executed.
