A. Hook: Sexism is imperceptive in everyday life in a substantial aspect as we are consistently told “act lady like”, “be a man”, or “boys will be boys”, but when have such things of gender justified the reasons for the molestation and criticism we situate upon one another?
B. The most common definition that plainly explains what sexism is, is the discrimination between woman and men that consequently leads to the oppression and desolation between both sexes. Such who believe the unwinding issue of sexism, claim the biological and cultural differences of the sexes bring one another down and restrict each gender from living a fulfilling life free from all discrimination based off of the sexual orientation they were born with. 1. Evidently, the perspective of female and male roles that are portrayed in commercials are reflective of the traditional notions of gender views, where women are consistently dominated by the male gender in the real world. For example, in a commercial advertised to sell a sports car, a handsome, masculine male will attract a beautiful female and drive off to “happy town”, but in a realistic view point, the female is represented as a decoration to a successful man with a nice car and plenty of money. Men and women both drive cars, it’s a simple necessity to be able go to work for most people, however, from the commercials on television, one would assume that men are the primary purchasers of cars. In Steve Craig’s essay, Men’s Men and Women’s Women, he analyzes four commercials to illustrate how advertisers strategically targets the viewers. Craig argues that advertisers will grasp the attention of the viewer by the gender ideals that both men and women have of each other. Not only do advertisers pick a target audience demographic, but they also will target the audience at specific time to air their commercials. By analyzing an Audi and Bud Light commercial, one can see that Craig arguments are true to an extent but it appears that commercials have gone from an idealized world to a more realistic and relatable stance. for are still [true, however it seems that commercials may have altered to appear more realistic.] [relevant to an extent. Common sense seems to dictate that commercials just advertise products. But in reality, advertising is a multi-headed beast that targets specific genders, races, ages, etc. In “Men’s Men & Women’s Women”, author Steve Craig focuses on one head of the beast: gender. Craig suggests that, “Advertisers . . . portray different images to men and women in order to exploit the different deep seated motivations and anxieties connected to gender identity.” In other words, advertisers manipulate consumers’ fantasies to sell their product. In this essay, I will be analyzing four different commercials that focuses on appealing to specific genders.

Sexism is a highly talked about issue read about online, seen in the news, and experienced in the day to day lives of many. The importance of this issue can be found in many writings. Authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Linda Hasselstrom, and Judy Brady have all discussed the topic of sexism in writings and how they affected their lives. Although each writer addresses the issue of sexism, each author confronts a different type of sexism; the kind we are born into, the kind we learn growing up, and the kind that is accepted by society at the end of the day.
Sexism is much like racism in a sense that it is the unequal treatment of individuals based on an ascribed characteristic; in this case, their gender. Sexism is directly related to patriarchy, the system in which males dominate females in most spheres of life (Thompson 300-301.)
Sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on sex or gender, especially against women and girls. It can be the belief that one sex is more superior to the opposite sex. In this movie, Jean Kilbourne narrates how media perpetrates the idea that the male is superior to the female. She proves her point through presenting examples of how women are altered in advertisements.
Gender discrimination is the action of being treated worse than others, simply because of your gender. It can occur once or continually over time, by the opposite or same sex. It is an illegal practice here in the United States, based on laws enacted in 1963-4.
Contrary to popular belief the perception that females are the only ones discriminated against on the basis of sex is clearly false. Yes, it is true that women tend to receive more sympathy in the case of sexist acts and or comments made against them by men, but that leaves no reason for the neglect of a situation with reversed genders. Now more than ever, we specific male stereotypes depicted in advertisements and popular culture: In his writing, Noor Sanauddin noted that David Benetar referred to sexism against men as "the Second Sexism,” Sanauddin went on to that using the appellation "Second Sexism" Benatar was referring to the wrongful discrimination against men and boys on the basis of sex, which Benetar says is '[s]o unrecognized [...] that the small simple indication of it will appear humorous to persons”(Sanauddin p1).
‘Boys will be boys’, a phrase coined to exonerate the entire male sex of loathsome acts past, present, and potential. But what about the female sex, if females act out of turn they are deemed ‘unladylike’ or something of the sort and scolded. This double standard for men and women dates back as far as the first civilizations and exists only because it is allowed to, because it is taught. Gender roles and cues are instilled in children far prior to any knowledge of the anatomy of the sexes. This knowledge is learned socially, culturally, it is not innate. And these characteristics can vary when the environment one is raised in differs from the norm. Child rearing and cultural factors play a large role in how individuals act and see themselves.
This essay will attempt briefly to argue the damages and benefits of how advertising shapes women's gender identity. First of all, gender identity, sometimes referred to as an individual’s psychological sex. It has been defined as the "fundamental, existential sense of one’s maleness or femaleness" (Spence 1984, p. 83).There are many types of advertisements that might form women gender personality for instance: smoking, drinking, weight and thinness and other supporting sorts that keep women in line trying to be good-looking and fashionable. Advertising surrounds the world every second of the day. This form of influence has had the power to influence how society views gender roles ever since men and women began to appear in advertisements. Through the exposure to many different gender portrayals in advertising, gender roles become developed by society. This stems from how men and women are depicted, which forms stereotypes regarding the individual roles of men and women. People often shift their definition of an ideal image towards what they see in advertisements. From this, they tend to make comparisons between themselves and the advertisement models. Throughout the ages in Western Civilization, a double standard for men and women has existed. Although in modern society women have started to level the playing field with men in terms of employment and leadership, but the gender gap in opportunities and in societal views persists. However, women can achieve true equality in society by evolving people’s actions through governmental action.

Women who sought to get rights were seen as radicals and sometimes even blacklisted from their jobs for protesting. Since ancient times, women had served as the caretakers of the home, children, and husband, getting nothing in return. Society had made it an expectation that women had to be married at a certain age and at times, not even finish their education. It was frowned upon if a woman wished to do more, such as get a job, or not get married at all. During the late 1800s to the 1900s women’s rights activists such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, to name a few, had stepped up and fought for women’s rights to vote and be heard as a valid voice. This had been the first step towards feminism and equality. The war of gender equality has been in existence throughout history and it is only until recently that it is being taken seriously. It was not until the 19th and 20th centuries that women have pushed to make their rights on the same level as men. Through the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities, Feminism was formed around this time and those involved with it have changed history since they first started. Feminism has been through three waves, each with their own set of goals and ideas they had wished to accomplish throughout those times. In spite of this, there are those who oppose their views and feel as if the feminists have accomplished nothing. Even if discrimination of women still exists, feminists have come close to accomplishing their goal of equal rights between genders through the passing of women’s suffrage, equal education opportunities, and equal pay.
