Flavored milk, such as chocolate milk is designed to be a tastier alternative to plain milk. In 1942, chocolate milk only accounted for “2.2 percent of the total fluid milk consumption in [U.S.] cities and villages” (Hadary 210-213) However, as of 2009, “...flavored milks [in U.S schools such as strawberry and chocolate milk] account for seventy percent (emphasis added) of all the milk [children] drink” (Lunau 48), with chocolate milk accounting for around sixty-two percent of all milk (Hanks, Just, and Wansink) . Flavored milk’s popularity in the United States is controversial, given the fact that chocolate milk contains added sugar to make it have “roughly [the same amount of sugar] as a glass of orange juice” (Lunau 48). According to the New York City Department of Education, “school milk [which includes chocolate milk] is an important source of protein, calcium, and vitamins such as A and D” ("Effects of Switching from Whole to Low-Fat/Fat-Free Milk in Public Schools New York City, 20042009."70-73). All of these nutrients are commonly thought to be necessary for children, especially during their growth and development phases. As one of the most important minerals in the human body, calcium maintains a healthy bone-density as well as allows muscles to contract and helping nerves send messages through the body (Aceto 246+). In addition, vitamin A found in chocolate milk is vital to human intellectual development of people. A study conducted at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in 2006 examined the hippocampus tissue of mutant mice with a deficiency in vitamin A. Interestingly, the study concluded that a deficiency of vitamin A in mice broke important brain functions. More specifically, the deficiency “impaired LTP (long-term potentiation) and LTD (long-term depression) processes”(J.T. 360). The presence of these processes are very important as they are indicators of proper “connections between brain cells” (J.T. 360). Even though this study was limited to mice, it still demonstrates that vitamin A is important in humans as it helps fend off “learning and memory …show more content…
Dr. James Rippe, a Harvard Medical School graduate and professor at the University of Central Florida, “[dismisses the] claim [that] high fructose syrups in flavored milk [cause obesity] in children” ("Amid Bans at U.S. Schools, Research Highlights the Health Benefits of Chocolate Milk."). Since childhood obesity is a relatively new, complex phenomenon, we cannot jump the gun and blame added sugar. Dr. Rippe believes that HFCS is nutritionally the same as healthy sugars extracted from beets and canes, and therefore, chocolate milk cannot cause obesity.("Amid Bans at U.S. Schools, Research Highlights the Health Benefits of Chocolate Milk."). In addition, a study conducted in Canadian elementary schools from 1992 to 2002 noticed that the estimated contribution of added sugars from [flavored] milk, derived from per capita availability data, is low at <1 g/day, or ~1% of Canadians' total added sugars intake” (Henry 3). This study emphasizes that the added sugar in chocolate milk is not enough to cause the obesity epidemic in
For example, according to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) short term diseases can cause high levels of cholesterol, and saturated fat leads to obesity, most people say this isn’t true but studies show it is. Why have your kids get sick when there are other things waiting, this is important for parents to know and avoid this drink. In addition, PETA says “In long term conditions it causes cholesterol and saturated fat leads to heart disease and cancer.” This shows that chocolate milk can cause illnesses or diseases to kids or adults. To conclude, Dr.Frank A. Oski Director at the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University says that chocolate milk can cause cramps, diarrhea, and allergies, all things that can be short or long term effects. This supports my claim because, it shows that children or adults could get this from this harmful drink in disguise. As one can see, we need to stop serving chocolate milk because of the illnesses and diseases it
Chocolate milk should be banned from schools because from school because kids consume too much sugar. It’s a proven fact that kids consume about 20% more sugar than they are supposed to in just 1 week. This is a bad thing because having extra sugar isn’t good for you. Another fact about chocolate milk is that after a year kids would have drank 2 gallons of sugar. You don’t want
This article is talking about a mayor banning beverages larger than 16 oz. at restaurants, sports arenas and movie theaters. The reason this mayor wants to ban large sodas is because he is afraid for all of New York’s health. That’s a good thing because a lot of us don’t know what we drink and eat most of the time. We just eat our food we don’t even bother to look what’s really in side such as calories, fats and oils in our food. This Mayor is doing New York a huge favor by banning large sodas. He’s helping everyone in New York about their health but people of New York doesn’t see that. There are people who are trying to not let him pass this law because some of them probably drink 16 oz. every day of once a week or twice a week or even more.
Since the beginning of time, people have been drinking milk. Even today you will find a gallon of milk in almost every refrigerator in America. Milk is, and has always been, a staple of our diet. Because it contains essential proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins, milk is considered one of nature's perfect foods. Unfortunately, throughout the last century milk has been subjected to many forms of modern processing practices, which deprive milk from many of its natural qualities and benefits. Therefore many essential vitamins and enzymes are lost. Processing milk has altered one of nature’s perfect foods and changed it into something nature did not intend. Because of the abundant health benefits in raw milk, this report will explain why it should be made legal for consumers to buy throughout the United States.
What is the best dog food? Veterinarians are often hit by that question from scads of anxious dog owners. Every dog owner wants to feed their dog with the best that is available. However, the sheer variety of dog foods and the conflicting views on the best dog diet can leave you quite perplexed. While some experts assert that home made food is best for dogs, others argue that commercial dog food is better. Anyway, we have witnessed a shift towards commercial dog food, owing much to the fast paced life that we all lead.
According to clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), chocolate milk has little or no benefit for bones. This teaches us that chocolate milk is not needed in the cafeteria. Chocolate milk also doesn’t have the same 9 essential nutrients as white milk. And, Ann Cooper, the head of the nutrition services for Boulder Valley School district says, “ It works as a treat for home, but it doesn't belong in schools.” All of this shows that chocolate milk has little or no benefit for children's
¨ Chocolate milk has 18 total grams of sugar (12 grams of lactose naturally found in all white milk and 6 grams of actual added sugar),¨ According to the Western Dairy Association, the fifteenth leading milk producer in the U.S. On the other hand, sports drinks and colas have almost three times the amount of added sugar. Cola has nine teaspoons of added sugar and sports drinks have about seven teaspoons of added sugar, according to Melissa Dobbins a Nutrients. This shows that colas and sports drinks are the problem when talking about obesity not the healthy nutrition drink chocolate milk, Kids are not obese because they drink chocolate milk because it has zero grams of fat and very little added sugar. This proves that kids are not obese because they drink chocolate milk, but, because they drink beverages with mountains of fattening ingredients. This proves that chocolate milk does not cause obesity but colas and sport drinks
Consumption of soft drinks has an impact on childhood obesity. According to France Ellisle from France’s Institute of Health and Medical Research, there is a direct connection between weight gain and sugar. The average adolescent is consuming about fifteen to twenty teaspoons of sugar daily. (Scott, 2) Along with the sugar children are eating more and more fast food. The sit down dinner has come to an end. In most families both parents work fulltime leaving little time to prepare healthy meals. Parents look for food that is quick, cheap and satisfies the child. The problem with fast food is that has very little nutritious value and is often high in fat and salt content, with a good measure of preservative thrown in....

There are many different kinds of effects that come from not consuming the right amount of the nutrients everyday. Receiving the right amount is key especially for children ages zero to three years old. Some physical effects in early-aged children is the inability to fully develop in growth and their ability to fight infections is very weak. Other physical conditions found in children are chronic health issues such as, asthma and Cystic Fibrosis, also many children find themselves needing to be hospitalized. Mental effects are taken into account as well, because many children experience behavioral consequences and challenges: Children also suffer from anxiety and aggression issues. Young children are not only people affected from lack of nutrients, but adults experience both physical and mental problems too. Adults are not as affected by not getting the accurate amount of nutrients, these ages unfortunately do not get to live a...

Beef is “what’s for dinner,” pork is “the other white meat,” lamb is something many reserve for Christmas Eve or Easter dinner, turkey is the traditional Thanksgiving staple, and everything else tastes like chicken. There are plenty of meats out there in the local grocery store or meat market to choose from when selecting a protein for the dinner table, but there is one popular species of livestock that is missing from the list here that many enjoy around the world, but not so much in the U.S. Nope, not rabbit or quail, but goat. Although many Americans are not familiar with the cuisine gleaned from our caprine friends, goat is one of the most widely consumed meats in the world. According to an article by a researcher at the University of California, Davis, approximately 63 percent of the world’s population consumes goat meat on a regular basis. With the U.S. population only comprising a little under five percent of the total world population, there are many people missing out on this popular protein!
Food is a major part of everyone’s everyday life. It’s hard to imagine life without the chocolate cake on your fingers or a carne asada taco in your mouth. Enjoying delicious desserts and fast food seem extremely magnificent to eat and spend money buying them. Although, there have been many controversies in the United States on how it’s the largest country with the most obesity regarding children, which affects their health, many people are still going throughout their day snacking. Many people in America are having full course meals with thousands of calories in one sitting not knowing the short term or long term side effects that are going to take a huge toll on their lives. Food is delicious, but it comes with a secret behind the savoriness/sweetness.
“Healthy eating” means eating a variety of foods that gives you the nutrients you need to maintain your health, feeling good with your health conditions, and having enough energy throughout the day (Nordqvist). A poor diet can cause harm a person’s daily life activities. Research from Eating Healthy Might Prove Too Expensive for Poor ABC News shows, that the price of eating healthy foods may be expensive to a family who earns a low-income. So, eating fast foods may be more convenient for them knowing that the prices are way less. However, everyone should make the effort to stop eating foods that will later on harm your health. As mentioned in the article “Healthy Eating”, “Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically
