Goat: It’s What Should Be for Dinner
Beef is “what’s for dinner,” pork is “the other white meat,” lamb is something many reserve for Christmas Eve or Easter dinner, turkey is the traditional Thanksgiving staple, and everything else tastes like chicken. There are plenty of meats out there in the local grocery store or meat market to choose from when selecting a protein for the dinner table, but there is one popular species of livestock that is missing from the list here that many enjoy around the world, but not so much in the U.S. Nope, not rabbit or quail, but goat. Although many Americans are not familiar with the cuisine gleaned from our caprine friends, goat is one of the most widely consumed meats in the world. According to an article by a researcher at the University of California, Davis, approximately 63 percent of the world’s population consumes goat meat on a regular basis. With the U.S. population only comprising a little under five percent of the total world population, there are many people missing out on this popular protein! In 2012, the USDA’s National Agriculture Statistics Service reported that there are over 2.25 million meat goats produced in the U.S. each year. I’m an individual of Irish descent who lives in Wisconsin, so there is nothing refutable about the impact that meat and animal byproducts such as milk and eggs has had on my upbringing and daily diet (not forgetting potatoes of course). However, my reasoning for eating these food items isn’t because of necessity based on a dietary need or market constraint. I eat these items because I’m a young male athlete who requires a ridiculous caloric intake and these are the food items that I grew up purchasing, preparing and consuming. The scenarios in which I eat meat now occur on a sporadic basis depending on current costs, meat sources and diet, but are greatly influenced by the food culture I grew up with not by whether it is permissible or not.
The abuse of livestock is a widespread problem that affects everyone who buys and consumes meat products. Most people are not even aware of how slaughter-destined animals are treated while alive, what chemicals are forced into their bodies, what they are forced to eat, and how they are slaughtered. Fortunately, an increasing number of slaughter plants and small farms have been conforming to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA), after it was passed in 1958, and amended to be fully enforced in 2002, but there are still slaughter plants that abuse, neglect, and provide poor conditions for livestock (“Humane” Animal). When looking at the realities of mass producing meat and animal products, two serious problems arise: the quality of life for the animals, and the possible negative health effects for the people who consume these products.

Today people are concerned with what they eat in order to lose or maintain their weight. What people do not know is how their food is obtained, how veganism is beneficial to their health and what the food industry thinks of vegans. Veganism is the avoidance of any animal products particularly food. Veganism confronts the issues of animal welfare as well as dietary concerns for humans. It is an effective method to live a healthy and humane lifestyle.
Processed foods are in everybody’s lives, but are they safe? Processed foods are foods that are in boxes, cans, or bags usually containing artificial colors, flavors, and other chemical ingredients that most people can’t pronounce or recognize (SFGate). For my operation, I will be producing meat and hides/pelts for leathers. My reasoning for not choosing mohair is because of the decline in this market with the increase of polyester and non-wool/mohair products. This increased demand has let to an increase in price per pound of goat that the producers can market their products, and thus, produce a greater profit. In order to maximize your profit, the producer must have goats ready to be sold to the market and ready for slaughter almost year round in order to hit the market during peak times, such as Muslim holidays like Ramadan or Christian holidays such as Easter.
