The use of animals in biomedical research has led to a breakthrough for diseases and sicknesses throughout history. However it has been a cause for a very heated philosophical, scientific and public debate for hundreds of years. The topic of animal testing has not changed over time due to the fact that animals have been being used for testing for hundreds of years. However due to certain organizations such as PETA, exposing what happens while animal testing is being conducted to the public, there has been an uproar and many people who are animal rights activists have changed the publics view on animal testing.

Many people believe that computer modeling can be an alternative to animal testing. “Computers can do amazing things. But even the most powerful computers can’t replace animal experiments in medical research.” – Professor Stephen Hawking, quoted by Seriously Ill for Medical Research in 1996. However, during a government meeting about funding for animal research former National Institutes of Health director admitted that experimenting on animals to help human has been a major failure. He stated, “we have moved away from studying human disease in humans. The problem is that animal testing hasn’t worked, and its time we stopped dancing around that problem.
