Animal testing is an immoral, heinous, atrocious act. One should never put an animal before his own life; we are all here on earth due to some strand of evolution or the other, making prejudice and other discriminations (man or not) obsolete and meaningless. Those who would think themselves above another creature are each failures in their own individual way. The rights of animals cannot be questioned, it is an inalienable fact that most do not understand, when given thought that is free of bias and the plague of arrogance, as Arthur Schopenhauer once said: “The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.” In a society as unquestionably advanced as man, a society in which even the consumption of meat is an indulgence and in no way necessary, the duty of treating all life with anything more than a central nervous system is nothing less than a law.
A law that many of us seem to be breaking; testing on animals for our own benefit is quite possibly the most disgusting thing any of us could take part in. Surely any self-aware being would be conscious of the crime being committed the universal felony of putting another being behind your own selfish desires. Excuses like “it’s for the greater good” and “we are above animals” are grotesque. If torture is for the greater good, then I’m not so sure that the greater good is something I want to see. Curing diseases at the cost of animal lives is immoral, and nobody has the right to make that decision.

...ind an alternative let it be this: “If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson's eyes and ask him if it hurts.” - Ellen DeGeneres.
Few things are wholly and truly incorrect in this world; there is always a perspective of somebody, making the word evil somewhat obsolete. While evil as about as useful of a word as good, animal testing is one of the things that can only be taken as a crime on the cosmic level. There is nothing good that comes out of an atrocity such as this, nothing worth the cost at least. The human race can only hope that we can forgive ourselves in the future, when we all understand the basics of right and wrong.
One must remember that scientists who carry out animal testing are human to and most definitely do feel some sense of guilt using these animals for the sole reason to benefit mankind. However, “if there were good alternatives to animals that worked better or as well, for less money and hassle, scientists would use them” (Source D). Many believe that animals testing is wrong, but they must understand that at the current time there is no other option. It is difficult to find a different practice has been so substantial and has improved millions of lives and society as a whole. Animal testing, though the testing on animals may not be the best option, the after effects of testing has been successful over the past decades and will continue on this path as scientists and researchers gain more knowledge. There may be a point in time that society becomes so better off that there would be no more need to test
Animals are used as a part of experimentations in order to accomplish new openings. A few individuals think that it is satisfactory, while others contend that it is not moral to sacrifice animals for science. Estimated, that fifty to one hundred million of animals are used for tests in the world. Despite the significance of experiments, the quantity of animals and purpose of research are not under any control. Animals testing should be banned under a few circumstances; we can enhance the situation by using alternative ways such as replacement, reduction, and refinement according to International Society for Applied Ethology.
Throughout history, beginning as early as 500 BC, animals have been used to test products that will later be utilized by humans (“Animal Testing” 4), what isn’t publicly discussed is the way it will leave the animals after the process is done. Many innocent rabbits, monkeys, mice, and even popular pets such as dogs are harmed during the testing application of cosmetics, medicine, perfumes, and many other consumer products (Donaldson 2). Nevertheless, there are many people whom support the scandal because "it is a legal requirement to carry out animal testing to ensure they are safe and effective” for human benefit (Drayson). The overall question here is should it even be an authorized form of experimentation in the United States, or anywhere else? The fact of the matter is that there are alternatives to remove animals out of the equation for good (“Alternatives” 1). They are cheaper, and less invasive than the maltreatment of the 26 million innocent animals that are subjected to the heartlessness of testing each year (“Animal Testing” 4). All in all, due to the harsh effects of animal testing, it should be treated as animal cruelty in today’s society.
There is a moral blind spot in the treatment of animals that enable us to justify the cruelties for the perceived benefits of humans. Animals are living things. They have lungs which breathe, hearts which beat, and blood that flows. In fact, animals sense of smell, sight, and sound is much more acute than our own. Therefore, we can assume that their sensitivity to pain is at least equal to ours. According to Hippocrates, “The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different.” This can go with the Duty Theory that states that every individual gets treated the same. The intentions of animal testing is not to harm the animals, but that is exactly what it does.
Animals should have rights just like humans and should not have to go to through torture. Killing animals is wrong and should be stopped because animals have done nothing wrong. Imagine not having a choice and being used for testing without having a say; for everyone this seems like a horrible nightmare but for animals this nightmare is reality. Animals should not be used for testing. They do not have a voice so they have no way of saying no and testing on animals is wrong in every way possible. It is unfair to the animals because they do not have a choice. Although animal testing is wrong, it is a good way to make sure the product research is safe before retailing it and letting people use it. Animal testing should not be used because animals
Animal testing is wrong and no matter what the circumstances are, it should never be condoned. Imagine living your life in a miniature cage where your body is unable to move due to the little space surrounding you. Imagine not being able to give your opinion on anything. Your life consists of getting coated in creams which could potentially burn your skin, yet nothing is done to stop it. Picture it as if it were yourself in that situation, you wouldn't like it, would you?
I believe animals were brought to this earth not for testing ,not for meat but for us to take care of them and have them as long life companion. Testing on innocent animals is cruel. Animals were made to be companions not for us to use them for our own benefits, Benefits that don't usually have the outcome or results we need and/or want. One example of this is the statistic that fifty to one hundred million animals die each year due to animal testing. Imagine how scared, weak, vulnerable an animal feels when they are beings strapped down and tested on. Then shoved in a small cage so they can wait for the unknowing results. Once the result doesn't go as planned they are either killed and tossed out like trash or are left there to
Imagine that you woke up one morning and discovered that your favorite pet was gone, and later found out that it was kidnapped, sold into experimentation, and later discovered that your pet had died from animal testing. How would you feel? Because according to Daniel Engber in his article “Where’s Pepper?” this happened to a farmer back in 1965 where his dog Pepper got kidnaped and later died of experimentation. As far back as ancient Greek writing we have been testing on animals and there have been strong feelings from both sides. Those who are for animal testing say animal testing has made some great medicines like vaccines for hepatitis B and C. And those who are against animal testing say that it is cruel and inhumane, that there are other methods, and animals are so different
Now that we have a good feeling to what animal testing is and where it is being done, I will explain why animal testing is wrong and the negatives that come from it. Humans are animals, so it may seem like non-human animals are perfect for finding out answers that we may not know about medications, chemicals, and products. But what people do not understand is that these animals are suffering. Animals and humans are morally equal therefore animals should be awarded the same respect as humans (Liou, July 6, 2010). As animal rights activist, Ingrid E. Newkirk quotes, “When it comes to having a central nervous system, and the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a rat is a pig, a pig is a dog, and a dog is a boy.” We all feel, think and behave in the same way but we still continue to harm and test animals for our own benefit without giving them a say. This is well said by Indian philosopher and poet, Sri Aurobindo, when he says “Life is life- whether in a cat, dog, or man. There is no difference between a cat or man. The idea of difference is a humans conception for man’s own advantage.”
While there are certain rights in place for humans there also needs to be certain set in place to benefit the animals that are being tested and killed on a daily basis. “In part II of Animals Experimentation the writer specifies harming the animal is highly undesirable and should not be done unless justified. Experiments can be justified if the social good derived from them actively outweighs the negative aspect of harming a sensitive creature.”(Pal T. Part II) While the ways that have been mentioned above are unethical scientist should resort to finding alternative ways in making scientific advancement whether it’s through medicine, research, or science. Many will agree that the brutal killing of these animals is downright immoral when it comes to ethical code and
Proponents who believe animal testing should not be banned argue that all animals are treated fairly. This isn’t true, animals are terribly treated and put and harsh conditions to solve human problems. Some include forced chemical exposure, intoxication testing, exposure to drugs and genetic manipulation. These practices aren’t ethical- they cause physical, mental, and emotional pain.
First of all, animal testing should be banned in order to protect the rights of animals. In other words, animals’ rights are infringed by experimenting on them. Animals and humans are similar in many ways. To begin with, they have similar levels of biological complexity. They both are aware that they exist and they both make conscious choices. Philosophy professor at North Carolina State University Tom Regan points out "Animals have a basic moral right to respectful treatment. This inherent value is not respected when animals are reduced to being mere tools in a scientific experiment." (F. B. Orlans) Experimentation on an animal ...
Animals feel pain and understand when they are being shown love or abuse. Testing on animals has regularly been a favorite to test drugs and cosmetics. In actuality, there are several methods of testing drugs without the use of animals. To achieve a world wide halt of animal testing changing the current law to recognize that all animals are worthy of protection is impertinent.
To start, animal testing is harsh and “...has no place in our modern world,” (Alexis Croswell). Just like humans, animals have the same right to live in our world without being forced into suffering. These creatures that are used for experiments are usually left with severe pain and serious trauma. For example, some animals are forced underwater for a long period of time or purposefully have their legs broken. Many are even deprived of
In conclusion, animal testing has been overused for too long. Nothing essential has been the outcome of it, and no scientific breakthrough has stopped anything from damaging us. The many, many animals are mistreated, many times killed. They need to begin to establish a more protective act, just like the AWA, however this time, it should strive to protect the majority of the animals used, so they can live safely. Finally, if we are able to find and develop successful alternatives to all animal testing, it might be gone forever. If all of these things can come together and make it happen, we may be able to see the day where all animals are treated ethically and with sheer, utter, respect.
