Recommended: Why should we ban animal testing

Animals have been used in testing since around 322 BC, and no one has done anything to stop this (Hajar). Medical breakthroughs and safety procedure would have been easily accomplished without the torture of these animals. To ensure the safety of a product tests are conducted and due to these tests 115 million animals are killed worldwide. (About Animal Testing). Animal Testing should be banned because animals are put under harsh conditions and their lives should not be at risk for our selfish needs. Proponents who believe animal testing should not be banned argue that all animals are treated fairly. This isn’t true, animals are terribly treated and put and harsh conditions to solve human problems. Some include forced chemical exposure, intoxication testing, exposure to drugs and genetic manipulation. These practices aren’t ethical- they cause physical, mental, and emotional pain. Some examples of drugs passing animal testing but having devastating consequences in humans include thalidomide, benoxaprofen, troglitazone, and many others. Thalidomide was given to pregnant women to control nausea and caused 10,000 births with limb-reduction defects. It was tested on pregnant mice, rats, and guinea pigs and all tests came back negative. Benoxaprofen was a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and caused extreme liver toxicity and phototoxicity. It was only withdrawn when there were 3,500 serious adverse events and 60 deaths, in Britain alone. Troglitazone was a drug intended to treat type 2 diabetes. Tests on rats brought no serious side effects but when caused fatal liver failure and led to 391 deaths.
