An archetype is a human experience or symbol that is universally known and accepted. Archetypes can be images or stories passed on through history. Carl Jung, a prominent psychiatrist in the early 1900’s, used archetypes in his theory about the human psyche and how humans can recognize these symbols because they reside in the collective human subconscious. Some common examples of archetypes are The Hero, The Mentor, The Mother, The Villain and many more. Archetypes like these can be seen in everyday things like books, tv or movies. In The Complete Stories by Zora Neale Hurston there are many different archetypes in each story but three prominent ones are The Trickster, The Devil or Evil, and The Hero. In the novel The Trickster archetype …show more content…
The people used to get mad but they never could catch him.” (62) Coon Taylor is a trickster because he is a petty thief but one who can not get caught. Other Tricksters in the novel are Sweet Back and Jelly from Story in Harlem Slang. While they are not thieves like Coon Taylor they are still Tricksters because they are liars, only lying to one up and impress the other person. “Put your money where your mouth is”, he challenged, as he mock-struggled to haul out a huge roll.” (129) “Jelly slammed his hand in his bosom as if to draw a gun. Sweet Back did the same.” (131) When these characters are arguing they begin trying to be better than the other person as shown in these quotes. Another archetype seen in the novel is The Great Devil or Evil. An example of this is in the story Sweat. The character Sykes is evil …show more content…
She seems like an unlikely hero but she saves her love John from being killed. “I’m going and get it, Ham’ she announced as she stepped over the threshold to freedom. ‘Lawd! He’ll kill me sho’s you born.’ Her feet were already on the stairs. I’ll have that key or die. Ham, you put some victuals in that rowboat.” (38) Another Hero is John De Conquer in High John De Conquer. John de Conquer is a symbol of freedom for anyone in need and who summons him but especially for slaves. He is highly renowned in the story as a savior and the person who freed the slaves. He is compared to the great historical figure King Arthur. The author writes “Like King Arthur of England, he has served his people, and gone back into mystery. He waits to return when his people shall call again.”(142) This is an example of John de Conquers great power and leadership. John de Conquer was considered the true freer of the slaves. He put the idea of ending slavery into the people's heads and gave slaves hope for when it would end. The author portrays this when writing: “John de Conquer had done put it into the white folks to give us our freedom, that's what Old Massa fought against it, but us could have told him that that it wasn't no use. Freedom just had to come.” (143) John de Conquer was a Great Hero in this story because he was a symbol for hope and freedom and that is what he gave the
The different archetypes are the shadow, the mandala, the great mother, the transformation, the hero, the spiritual father, and the trickster. All archetypes were drawn from a part of what makes us human and hidden in our subconscious. Many of the characters in the film often play more than one character. An example of this would be Ben Kenobi seems to play the archetype of Luke’s father, then he also plays the archetype as an old, wise man.
"The Devil and Tom Walker" is a short story by Washington Irving that many wonder about. It teaches a lesson and has many archetypes in the characters. In literature, an archetype is a typical character, a type of action, or a situation that leads to the representation of such universal patterns of human nature. An archetype may be a character, a theme, a symbol or it can even be a setting. Tom walker is the protagonist of the story he is the main character.
Consistent in literature throughout every era and culture, archetypes represent a recurring image, pattern, or motif mirroring a typical human experience. An idea developed by Carl Jung, archetypes in literature exist as representations reflecting vital perceptions of the human psyche expressing the manner in which individuals experience the world. Using Jung’s concept, writers of all epochs embeds archetypes in structures, characters, and images of their narratives. John Gardner, in his novel Grendel, integrates several of Jung’s archetypes into his epic tale derived from the early story Beowulf. Gardner associates Jung’s personas of the outcast, the shadow, and the mentor-pupil relationship through the identities of Grendel, the narrator of events, and the dragon.
Flannery O’ Conner’s short story, “A good man is hard to find”, explains emotional reactions, betrayal, and violence. The misfit is an example of a devil figure. This character archetype is best seen when we see the misfit’s true colors shine as he murders the grandmother and her family. O’ Conner uses setting archetypes best when she uses a clear bright sky or an open dirt road, which can mean a variety of outcomes. This helps understand the many plot twists in the story. We best see symbolic archetypes as the three bandits including the misfit. They represent a mock of the holy trinity and represent evil. “The fall” is a good archetype that shows the misfit’s lack of innocence when he betrays the grandmother. This best explains the whole
An archetype in literature is defined as a typical example of a certain type of person. A character in a poem or play can be placed into many different archetype categories. Archetypes help a reader to gain a better understanding of who a character in the work is on the inside. This deeper insight into the character allows the reader to follow the flow of the story easier and more effectively. There are many different archetypes that can help to advance the story. One of the most useful in advancing this story is the typical powerful character. Whether it be supernatural or cunningness this character always comes out on top in the situation and holds the most control over others and their actions. “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”,
The Maze Runner is a 2014 mystery/science fiction film that can be viewed from an archetypal perspective. An archetype can be described as a pattern that can and is copied and recurring symbols or characters. The concept of archetypes came from Carl Jung a psychiatrist who believed that all cultures use archetypes to build stories without communicating to each other about them. Two groups of archetypes are the character and symbolic archetypes. The film The Maze Runner should be analyzed through an archetypal perspective because it has character and symbolic archetypes.
Archetypes refer to the persistently recurring symbols or motifs in literature. The term itself has its origins in ancient Greek and continues to play a prominent role in analyzing literature. Archetypal images and story patterns encourage readers to participate ritualistically in basic beliefs, fears, and anxieties of their age. These archetypal features not only constitute the eloquence of the text but also tap into a level of desires and concerns of civilization. The Anglo-Saxon poem, Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, integrates many of the common archetypes that still exist today. The outcast archetype is one that particularly expressed the desires, anxieties and values of the people who lived during the Beowulf era. Grendel, a character of monstrous appearance and hazily human emotion, is portrayed as the principal outsider in Beowulf. The incorporation of a banished character against his fellow society effectively expressed the anxiety and fears that the Anglo-Saxon culture felt towards seclusion and abnormality, caused by a societal absorption in family lineage and traditionalism.
An archetype is a model of a character, that reflects what everyday people believe how a character should look or act in a situation. Archetypes help the reader easily understand a character’s purpose, and follow commonly accepted universal traits. Two recognizable archetypes include The Villain and The Hero. In the book Highly Illogical Behavior, Lisa Praytor is willing to do anything to be accepted into a psychological college. She uses the town hermit, who is known as Solomon Reed to promote herself for college acceptance. Lisa’s decisions and behavior present her as The Manipulator, (a person who plays with people, situations, or opportunities to get what they want) who is self-absorbed, determined, and underhanded.
“The archetype is probably Jung’s most difficult concept. Archetypes are inherited predispositions to respond to the world in certain ways. They are primordial images, representations of the instinctual energies of the collective unconscious” (Frager). The archetypes in Jung’s analysis are the shadow, anima, animus and self. Beginning with the shadow, this to be a person of the same sex but possessing different traits. The Wicked Witch represents the shadow, the dark or unconscious part of the personality that the conscious ego tries to ignore. Along with the witch, her heinous flying monkeys could be categorized into this archetype. The Wicked Witch of the West is a dark, controlling presence who seeks to dominate and control. Any person seen throughout the world could be symbolized by the witch as a foreboding character and one who thought all was right with their plan of action, hence a universal
Psychologist Carl Jung proposed that humankind has a collective unconscious, which is manifested in myths and dreams, which harbors themes and images that all humans inherit. Carl Jung’s proposal about the collective unconscious is expressed when archetypal and mythological criticism applies to literary works (Archetypal Criticism). Neverwhere is a novel written by Neil Gaiman, which is heavily influenced by archetypal and mythological concepts. Neverwhere is the story of a young man who tries to help an injured girl named Door on the street, when he soon realizes that this is no ordinary person that he has come across and he has to go into the underworld to get her help. Richard goes to get her help from a man in the underworld named Marquis
The archetypal literary criticism centers itself around archetypes. Archetypes represent the first model of something. Writer and literary expert Elémire Zolla explains archetypes appear as patterns and exist in an intangible fashion. Another interpretation describes them as patterns of “instinctual behavior” (LaLlave and Gutheil). In literary terms, they appear in the form of characters, traditions, events, stories, or images existent in other works. Regardless of different cultures or time periods, archetypes remain present in literature.
In the novel Bless Me Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, he uses archetypes to connect the reader to every person whose has ever existed. By adding these archetypes to his work, it helps the reader connect to the novel and it helps us associate with the human experience. Through his experience as a writer, he found his own way of writing. Anaya can relate to many other authors in the way that they try to write a story from their roots and what their childhood was like, not like all the American books they are used to reading. Rudolfo Anaya, Sandra Cisneros, and Chinua Achebe all have a similar way of writing because they all include archetypes in their literature to connect us as humans.
... typical archetype. These characters are obviously supposed to mirror the archetypes that are common in fairy tales, but their flaws are contradictions to the archetypes that they are supposed to represent; through this Goldman mocks typical and standard fairy tales.
In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury indicates the archetype of snakes, the motif of guns, and critical symbolism to generalize that one needs to “cut off [the] terrible emptiness” in order to allow their thoughts to be clear and heard.
For my first archetype, I'm choosing hero because it's one of my favorite archetypes. Therefore, it makes it easy for me to list examples of it, and there's plenty of films and television shows that display this archetype. So it will be fun and easy to put it down on paper. As history has shown everybody loves a hero. From legends to Bible passages to comic book series, a hero tends to be the pinnacle and center of the story. People root for the hero.
