Gathering Meaningful Opinions and Perspectives
When evaluating a program, it is important to have meaningful data gathered in a way which makes sense for the methodological framework chosen. When evaluating the efforts of a community college in implementing an Allied Health program, Appreciative Inquiry is an appropriate methodological guide to assist in the formation of assessment questions, analysis of responses, and the development of recommendations for the future of the program. The purpose of this paper is to apply Appreciative Inquiry to data collection instrumentation and evaluation to understand the benefits and contributions of the community college Allied Health program.

Appreciative Inquiry is a methodology which can be applied to assessment which would guide evaluators through the principles of discovery, dream, design, and destiny (Whitney & Trosten-Bloom, 2010). The community college Allied Health program is a relatively new program which is still in development. Currently, the program offers certifications in medical assisting, phlebotomy, electrocardiogram, and patient care. Students can choose to seek one or more of these certifications. Education experiences consist of didactic classroom lectures, hands-on laboratories and simulations, and clinical experience in the community hospital and/or other clinical sites. To ensure that the program is developing according to the mission and goals of the community college and the needs of the community, evaluations must be …show more content…
The evaluators have the duty to keep stakeholders and constituents informed in a clear and transparent manner. In order to ensure these duties are effectively executed, the evaluators would espouse the U7, Timely and Appropriate Communication and Reporting, and U8, Concern for Consequences and Influence, standards. U7 indicates that stakeholders be kept aware of needed changes and given insight into the timeline, results, and recommendations of the evaluation process. U8 requires evaluators to consider potential influences of the evaluation results and the possible future consequences of the recommendations made (Yarbrough et al., 2011). Using these standards in the application of Appreciative Inquiry will allow evaluators to carefully and honestly assess, modify, and recommend appropriate changes to the program based on the information gathered (McNamara,
The University of Phoenix Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration (BSHA) program is intended to support the educational and career progression needs of both trying and experienced health care professionals through complete and coordinated learning. Students concentrate on creating key market-driven abilities and aptitudes which address the opportunities and difficulties of an ever-changing health care industry. There are six student learning outcomes that faculty and staff hope for all students in the program to accomplish. These SLO’s are evaluation statements that test the knowledge of the student. If the student can effectively analyze and apply the outcome in relation to the degree program, the student and faculty has successfully
The role of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in health care has been identified as a critical role in the goal to provide high-quality health care. APRNs have a bigger role to play in the health care system and it is important that students are provided with relevant and valuable knowledge as well as experience that improve their abilities. Achieving course objectives are critical for APRNs with the goal of contributing positively to the health care system. As a future APRN, I place high priority on life-long learning and the development of other people’s skill sets. All duties associated with health care require a dedication to excellence and selflessness. These are two components of learning that will improve the capabilities of
Admittance into the University of Georgia’s Honors Program would push me to continually test my potential in the pursuit of my Pre-Medical studies. I take pride in challenging myself to completely master a field of study that enhance my capabilities, and therefore, prepare myself to strive for my next goal in life. In order to grow into a better and improved self, one would need to test unfamiliar waters and reach new heights. The Honors Program ensures this growth by bringing in unaccustomed, rigorous, and beneficial material one cannot simply find in a traditional setting with their head in a textbook. Students are more able to grasp information through exploration and peer discussion which the Honors Program would provide. I believe that
At Seton Hill, I will be a student of the 5-year physician assistant program. From visiting campus and interviewing with the PA program staff, I am confident that Seton Hill will shape me into a competent and compassionate medical professional. Furthermore, I am confident that my fellow students and I will have an opportunity to make a difference in the community. A main pillar of the physician assistant career is catering the underserved populations. With a simple internet search, anyone can deduce
It just so happens that I believe that I can best and most effectively “lend a hand” when a person is at their bodily weakest. From a single semester of shadowing—a total of 11.75 hours—under physicians and surgeons alike, I have experienced a taste of the medical field from the fascinating gruesome finesse of an open-heart surgery to the day-to-day clinical patient interaction that makes up so much of a medical professionals career. From a community standpoint, I believe that a person does not need to be a doctor to express and achieve care. Because of that, I have joined organizations such as Chords4Kids on the TCU campus—that sings nostalgic songs from the 2000s to down-syndrome children at the local education center as well as at retirement homes, and other events alike—and the TCU GO Center, which mentors local high-school students during their college application process. For the later, I have been given the responsibility as the Executive Organizer for their annual “College Access Day” which provides local students with college information workshops and campus tours. I have also actively
In recent years, health care has experienced an endless struggle between patient care and economic viability. Advanced practice nurses play a vital role in successfully achieving and carrying out hospital patient care missions (Cathcart, Greenspan, & Quin, 2010). Additionally, advanced practice nurse roles are sometimes poorly defined making responsibilities unclear with unrealistic expectations (Spence Laschinger, Wong, Grau, Read, & Pineau Stam, 2011). Undoubtedly, advanced practice nurses are quickly becoming more educated, vision driven, and influential in response to the advanced nursing practice demands of current healthcare demands. In this paper I use the Appreciative Inquiry model to explore my future as a nurse in an advanced practice role.
After over 15 years of working as a CNA and Caregiver, I decided that I wanted to continue my education in the medical field. In 2013 I took the first step towards gaining a better future with more experience as a medical professional. I enrolled into a Medical Assistant program at IBMC college of Longmont. It has been a long road and I am almost to the finish line having gained essential skills needed to move further into my career. It has been a grueling and eye opening experience for me being an adult learner returning back to school at 33 years of age. I persevered through these pass two years with courage and determination, never letting my short comings get the best of me. As I approach the end of my journey with IBMC I have realized that I have a passion for helping those persons who
Presently, my extracurricular and academic interests are combined in my two year Health Science class. The class provides real-life medical situations that I may come in contact with in the future. Like any health science class, we study the body, in both its’ functional and dysfunctional state. This survey class also includes an introduction to equipment, medical protocol, and ethical issues. A sense of teamwork guides our procedures. Next semester, I will study at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Ramstein High School’s Career Practicum program. After initial on-the-job application of classroom learning, we will work with patients, supervised by the hospital staff. Living so close to a hospital that services thousands of seriously injured patients every year provides opportunities that other students lack, even in their college programs.
...rn, this is the time to put a plan in place to make a change. This could be restructuring the entire evaluation process or seeking educational opportunities for those in need. For decades evaluations have been so tied to monetary compensation for the employee that the organization has lost sight of the opportunity for change and development that they present.
Nursing students at State University need better clinical experiences and better clinical sites. Clinical sites that have nothing to do or preceptors who don’t want to educate should be cut out and replaced with better sites. Ideally each clinical should allow nursing students to gain experience in critical skills and patient ca...
On October 12th 2016, I had the wonderful opportunity to tour Richmond General Hospital as part of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Langara College. My clinical educator and group of eight peers were introduced to the many different disciplines associated with health care. The goal of this experience was to orientate nursing students to their future line of work. During this tour, we were introduced to various diagnostic-imaging techniques like X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, we got to explore the hospital pharmacy and learned how it operates. The group ended the tour by meeting with a staff member of the Richmond Hospital Foundation, who educated us on the value of generosity and fundraising in order to purchase essential medical equipment, improve patient care programs, and enhance the facility as a whole. This experience was educational and inspiring for me because it allowed me to critically think, as well as appreciate the teamwork that goes on in a hospital setting.
*As my first year in the nursing program comes to a close, I am to write this assessment based upon my abilities in each of the listed outcomes. I know I have much to learn, but I have also gained a tremendous amount of knowledge in the short amount of time I have been a part of this program.
In my journey through my undergrad years, I have realized that becoming a health administrator will allow me to address several of my interests while also allowing me to serve my community. I will be able to expand my thirst for knowledge while also making a self-efficiency community. I feel as a health care administrator, I need to encompass the role of a lifelong learner. For this to be continuing achieved, I need to be critically reflective of my environment and the people in the community.
The portions best parallel to the objectives of the Triple Aim are Education and Integration. Along with strategies to increase translational and transformative medical/biomedical education, the hospital also plans to advance interdisciplinary teams of physicians, nursing, pharmacy, public health; advancing staff and faculty development, and increasing space for training, are key aspects of creating a workforce more versatile and apt to enhancing health care services (John Hopkins Medicine, 2013, p.9). Objectives also include funding an assessment and evaluation office to maintain and track student performance and create electronic portfolios for all students and graduates to monitor the progress and performance of enrollees. With an impressive culture that encompasses advancing the expertise and knowledge of the health care workforce, provides support to the health care worker shortages that are seen and improves access to services and also the quality of care provided for
There are several reasons organizations initiate performance evaluations, however the standard purpose for performance evaluations is to discuss performance expectations; not only from the employers perspective but to engage in a formal collaboration where the employee and the manager are both able to provide feedback in a formal discourse. There are many different processes an organization should follow when developing its performance evaluation tool; in addition essential characteristics that must accompany an effective performance appraisal process. I will discuss in detail the intent of a performance evaluation, the process an organization should follow in using its performance evaluation tool, along with the characteristics of an effective
