The purchase for week five assignment was an Apple iPhone. Apple is known to be a multinational corporation that develops, designs and sells electronics such as computer software and personal computers. It is the world’s second largest information technology company and the world’s third largest mobile phone maker (Statisticbrain.com, 2014). Apples best-known hardware products are the Mac laptops, iPod media players, iPhone smartphone and the iPad tablet computers.
Market segmentation is the process of identifying a group of people similar in one way or more ways based on a variety of characteristics and behaviours. The goal is to identify these groups of people with similar behaviours so that product packaging adjustments or communication strategies can be adapted to meet their specific needs, thereby increasing the possibilities of sale to this target group (Blackwell, D’Souza, Taghian, Miniard & Engel, 2006). There is no single way to segment a market however the main variables that might be used to structure the market is geographic segmentation, demographic segmentation, psychographic segmentation and behavioural segmentation. Geographic segmentation is dividing a market into different geographical units such as nations, regions, states, municipalities, cities or neighbourhoods (Kotler, Burton, Deans, Brown & Armstrong, 2013). Demographic segmentation is dividing the market into groups based age, gender, income, education, nationality, family life cycle and occupation. Psychographic segmentation is dividing a market into different groups based on social class, lifestyle or personality characteristics and behavioural segmentation is a form of segmentation based on consumer reactions to a product after it is available in the ma...

Currently in Australia there are 21 Apple stores which provide online customer service and free telephone calls 24 hours, 7 days a week plus online chatting methods to improve personal interaction (Store.apple.com, 2014). Delivery is always promised within two weeks for online purchases and for over-the-counter purchases there are customer friendly assistants to help immediately; products are bought by cash or credit.
Overall it is evident why Apple Inc. is a highly ranked multinational corporation as it never fails to satisfy their customers. Every aspect of Apple is taken care of therefore all customers are pleased with the products.
Segmentation variables can be classified into four major classes; geographic, demographic, psychographic and behavioural. The use of these categories either individually or in combination assists companies to identify and establish market segments which is relevant to the product or service they are offering. This in turn helps these organisations to evaluate the relevant segments to choose the pertinent target market.
Many factors should be addressed when defining a target market. These factors include market segmentation, product life cycle, and the four "P's" that make the marketing mix. Market segmentation is the process of dividing a total market into market groups consisting of people who have relatively similar product wants and needs. There are four major segmentation variables: geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral. Geographic segmentation includes world region, country region, city, density, or climate. Demographic segmentation can consist of age, gender, income, occupation, education, race, religion, or nationality. Social class, lifestyle, and personality fall into the psychographic segment. The behavioral segment divides buyers into groups based on their knowledge, attitudes, uses, or responses to a product (Bethel, 2007). Once the market segment is identified, that market can be targeted.

As discussed in Chapter 3, there are several bases for market segmentation. Because the needs and wants of consumers in various markets differ, there are general indicators that are used to segment markets—geographic demographic, and arguably most importantly, psychographic segmentation. The principal conclusions of this report show that the iPhone is a successful product that combines interesting features: iPod, internet browser and mobile phone, which satisfy the customer’s needs moreover it is also exceeding their expectations thanks to its fashionable design. However the UK current mobile market is very competitive, so Apple will have to deal with tough competition against established mobile phone manufacturers. Market segmentation strategies are utilized to identify these groups of consumers and strategies are designed and implemented to make the product or service appeal to them. Businesses and organizations may come up with different type of strategies involving different products and catchy phrases depending on the product or the target segment.
Market segmentation allows marketers to easily categorise customers in order to identify target markets and products for certain types of customers. Elaborating on this, Pine, Peppers and Rogers (1995) mention that market segmentation is a set of broad characteristics that focus on a group of customers. Furthermore, Kotler (1988) states that segmentation is the act of separating a specific set of customers, that open up markets, with apparent needs, behaviours and characteristics that require specific products. With this being said, marketers use this foundation in order to build and gain more information to target certain markets.

Not only are major tech companies competing against one another, but they are also competing against little programmers that know how to code. In our time you will never know with certainty when a small group of engineers or computer scientists are going to create, “next big thing”.
