Antecedents and Consequences of the Concept of Pain
Antecedents
The events that happen prior to concept taking place are known as antecedents (Walker & Avant, 1995). In the concept of pain, three main actions happen for pain to occur. First, an internal or external noxious stimuli is received. This stimuli travels to the brain through the peripheral nerve system (Brunner, et al., 2010, p. 234). Second, the individual must become aware of the stimuli. Lastly, the stimuli must be perceived as painful. Each person will respond differently to the pain experience. Therefore, the individual’s attitudes, personal experiences and knowledge are also antecedents to the concept of pain. Oscar’s mother states that she found him bleeding on the bathroom. Oscar states that he did not try to kill himself. Oscar’ mother admits that he had seen a psychiatrist in the past due to his self-mutilating behavior. Upon assessment the nurse notices multiple scars from previous cuttings from his wrist up to the elbows. Oscar has two new lacerations that need repair. Oscar admits that he cut himself. He says that he feels pleasure and relaxation when he does it. Oscar state that he did not want to cut himself so deep. He says that everything is a misunderstanding. This case is contrary to the concept of pain. Two of the main recurring themes of pain, which are unpleasantness and illness, are not present. Oscar is feeling pleasure that is the opposite of pain. The noxious stimuli coming from the tissue damage is not perceived as negative. Pain is a feeling that is avoided by those experiencing. On this case, Oscar is looking for that experience because it is perceived as positive. Some of the concepts associated with pain may or may not be present. For instance, Oscar could be feeling anxious about the situation.
