Maggie is introduced into the storyline quite subtle and quickly becomes the main focus of attention by the other three main characters. From the beginning, Maggie is a harsh contrast to the slum environment she has to endure. She "blossomed in a mud puddle ... a most rare and wonderful production of a tenement district, a pretty girl" (16) that not only had the physical beauty that her family seemed to lack, but also the hope that she could be better than what was around in her environment. Therefore, the slum environment that surrounds her contrasts her character greatly. "None of the dirt of Rum Alley was in her veins" (16) as she became the talk of numerous males in the neighborhood.
Crowded hallways, loud screams, and disappointment fill the airs. It only means that Mary, Maggie’s alcoholic mother is home, and ready to strike at Maggie. As the insults fly at her, she takes them like a stonewall, “Go the Hell” and “Maggie’s gone to the devil” (Stephen Crane 52). In one ear and out the other, all she can think of is Pete and the love that they share. In the book, Maggie: A girl of the streets, life wasn’t so easy for her. She dealt with an abusive alcoholic mother. Her whole life she tries breaking away and finally she can do that with her new love Pete. Things don’t always go Maggie’s way, but she stays tough and fights for what makes her happy, showing she won’t let her struggles get in her way. Throughout World War Two, many Americans such as Mildred Gillard and Fred. W. Kaltenbach, who worked as Propaganda broadcasters, faced many struggles, including some relating to loyalty to their home country and safety regarding their lives. They showed what being a loyal
...is a symbol of the past, but only in a sense that she must move on and never look back. On the other hand, Maggie sees the quilt as something she could use everyday in order to relive the ways of her ancestors in combination with her future life and aspirations. Though Maggie is limited in beauty and education when compared to Dee, Maggie is way ahead of Maggie in a stage of self-understanding. Maggie knows her abilities and respects what she has. However, Dee has no disabilities and could care less about her ancestors. Dee's ultimate goal is to feel distant from her ancestors, while Maggie's ultimate goal is to feel as one with her ancestors and their way of life. The saying that you must know where you come from in order to know where you are headed' is exemplified in this story. Without an understanding of the past, you can have no true self-understanding.
Maggie is a major character in Everyday Use. Because Maggie is quite and withdrawn, she is hardly recognized. “She has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since that house burned the other house to the ground”(316). While Maggie loved that house abundantly, Dee despised it. Although she became attached to her previous house, she portrays that materialism is not as important as remembering spiritual values. She has a true, un-superficial sense of family, or heritage, as she tells her mother that Dee may have the quilts because she "can 'member Grandma Dee without the quilts" (321). Maggie comprehends that she can recall her spiritual values without material possessions, unlike Dee. Dee becomes more concerned
"Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs, eying her sister with a mixture of envy and awe."(61) She is afraid of being weak and unable to project her happiness with the life she has chosen. Maggie attempts to remain quiet and reserved during the visit of her sister. The difference of their lifestyle interpretations is one of humble to extravagant. Unlike other young women, Maggie continues to live in an un-educated world where happiness is formed in the heart, not with possessions.
Maggie exists, naïve and uneducated, on her emotions and fantasies. She is unable to cope with reality and from the start has no chance for survival in an unforgiving world especially without any support or ability to distinguish fact from fiction. Crane shows the actuality of poverty and all it entails in Maggie’s story.
...reaches the clearing, he begins to gulp the water and has hallucinations that contain conversations with Aunt Clara and a rabbit. When George finally finds Lennie he reassures him that everything will be okay. At first Lennie is a bit confused, but asks George to recite their dream yet again. Before telling the story of their unique relationship, George tells Lennie to turn around and face the river. George begins to tell Lennie that their friendship is unique because they are there for another. He also tells him of their dream farm. Lennie becomes comfortable and hopeful suggesting they leave now. George agrees, raises the gun, and pulls the trigger. Shortly after, the lynch mob arrives only to find that George has already killed Lennie. In the ending moments of the novel, Carlson and Curly are confused by the special friendship that Slim and George have attained.
Right away, Crane paints the picture of the poor environment filled with violent children standing “upon a heap of gravel for the honor of Rum Alley,” (Crane, 1). The setting is described as being on the outskirts of any civilization, gruesome, and chaotic. Maggie is clearly the victim of the terrible environment she is put in. Despite being the only flower in a heap of mud and filth, she still couldn’t fully bloom. Crane, in a way, shows naturalism differently than other writers, since Maggie isn’t directly as effected by her environment as her family and neighbors are. When she found Peter, she knew thought she knew, that he was her opportunity to escape from that environment. Being the high- hoping type of girl, in such a limited environment, she saw Peter as her knight in shining armor. True, Peter was rich enough, but he wasn’t the perfect man, the man of the highest standards that she thought him to be. She failed to see that Peter possessed the wild and boyish qualities as her brother and the rest of the violent neighborhood kids. Being in such a class and raised the way she was, she didn’t have the ability to truly see Peter and society as a whole. That, along with her terrible life, family, and environment was what led her to her horrible fate. Cane wrote Maggie’s death very vaguely, as if her short life was meaningless to the universe. No one truly cared about Maggie’s death, showing how life goes on no matter
Landlord, “Oh look at you. You poor thing. What happened to you? You are crying, crying so hard.” (Landlord continues observing and he feels confused.) “What happens in Tony’s room? I’m going to find that out.”
