Anger is “an emotional state that varies in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage” (American Psychological Association 2). Anger can be caused by both external and internal events. The anger can be geared toward a specific person, event, or by worrying or brooding about personal problems. Memories of traumatic or enraging events can also trigger angry feelings (American Psychological Association 2). The purpose of anger-management is to give the individuals a safe healthy place to express and discuss their anger, while simultaneously being provided coping skills to further alleviate the biological and physiological changes that occur during anger outbursts. Leadership can be looked at as status and power in the group. The direction of conversation and sometimes the choices made by the group is effected by the values and perception of the strongest personality in said group. There are five different ways to attain power in a group. First being reward power which is based on rewarding others to obtain the power. Second is Coercive power, which is applying rules and punishment. Thirdly is expert power which is a person’s ability and skills to influence. Fourth is referent power, which is related to the likability of a person that gives them the power over others. Finally, there is legitimate power, a legitimate right to make demands of others (Ashford, LeCroy, & Lorti 2001). Katherine seems to demonstrate referent power. She has a very caring and friendly side to her that draws people in and makes them want to listen to what she has to say. She seems to be unaware of the power she possesses and is not pushy with her views of the other members’ issues. Nor does she consume the group with her own views of her problems. A task group will work toward a common goal like domestic violence but not concentrate on the individual suffering from domestic violence. In contrast, a process group will focus on the individual and their need for improving their coping skill and functioning in society in a healthy manner. Both groups focus on rehabilitation, correction, socialization, prevention, and problem solving to name a few. This anger management group is most definitely a process group that focusses on each individual’s specific need. No one person’s issue is more important than the others. Through time and effort these individuals will be able to change their lives step by step.
Anger is such a difficult emotion to control without the proper tools. It can cloud the judgment of the most level headed person anywhere. With the help of anger management and the seven group concepts any individual can alleviate the problems that stem from uncontrollable anger issues. They can have healthy relationships in their personal and professional life and be free of the damaging emotional baggage that comes from being unable to express anger in a healthy manner. These three women are truly lucky to have found one another and be able to work toward their personal goals together without any
