New York: Last evening around 11:13 pm a boy named Andy was fatally stabbed by the rival gang members, the Guardians. Andy Tucker was at a school dance with his girlfriend, Laura Dawson. He left the dance and went to Alfredo’s to get a pack of cigarettes. During this time was when Andy was fatally stabbed by the Guardians, a rival gang. Andy was wearing a purple jacket that signified that he was part of a gang, the royals. A member of the Guardians dragged and ripped a knife across his stomach. At the time Andy was bleeding out, one of the people to come upon the bleeding of Andy was, Freddie Lowe. Freddie was with his girlfriend at the time. He was asked why he did not help out. A hit was put out on Taylor and Zavala by leaders of the Mexican drug cartel because they were becoming a nuisance. This hit was carried out by the same Latino gang members who had previously done a drive-by shooting of a rival gang. The officers were enticed towards their imminent deaths with a car chase which was set up by the Latino gang members. This chase led them towards an apartment complex which was rigged with many gang members and artillery to ensure that neither Taylor nor Zavala would survive. The two were ambushed but decided that gunning their way out was their best option. When the officers made it to an alley they were met by another Latino gang member who fired at Taylor and Zavala, hitting Taylor once in the chest before being shot and killed by Zavala. The most obvious and simplest struggle in “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” is man vs. man. “He [Andy] had been stabbed ten minutes ago. The knife had entered just below his rib cage and had been drawn across his body violently, tearing a wide gap in his flesh.” This line describes the physical conflicts in “On the Sidewalk Bleeding.” Andy’s struggle with the Guardians involves several fights and rumbles in the past, and is typical of most youth gangs today. At first, Andy believes this will be his only dilemma of the night. “That was a fierce rumble. They got me good that time,” he thinks. At this point, only half an hour before his death, Andy is fully conscious and only worried about the big cut on his stomach that he expects is going to hurt in the morning.
The next morning, Maggie filed a police report about seeing the young boy in their house the previous night prior to her husband’s death. The police went to the Wilson’s house to investigate, but the boy was gone and there was no sign of any unusual activity. The three of them went back to their home where they mourned the loss of their dad and husband. The next night went smooth, they all stayed in the guest bedroom, avoiding the room where they had seen the young boy, and the room where Joe died. Two days later, at Joe’s funeral, Reagan spotted a young boy that looked like the boy she saw floating into her room that dreadful night. Reagan rushed over to her mom and Chandler to tell them what she saw. The night of the funeral, thunderstorms moved in and a big gust of wind blew a tree limb down onto the power lines adjacent to their house. This caused a power outage in the middle of the night followed by a loud lightning strike, which woke Maggie up. Suddenly an image appeared to be floating toward her. The shadow immediately made her think of the young boy they saw the other day. Before Maggie could call the police, the young boy strangled her to death. Her screams woke Reagan and Chandler up. Brandon then grabbed the fork out of Nicole's right hand and proceeded to stab her in the left fore arm. Cherry Valance is a red-headed Soc, who feels out of place among peers but hides it to fit in. She does not enjoy the parties and other joys other most Socs like. Cherry’s boyfriend, Bob, picks her up while he’s drunk and she has to go with him, mainly to avoid him and his Soc friends from fighting the greasers, even though she hates being around when Bob’s drunk. Soon after, Bob is killed by Johnny and she is heartbroken, and she tells Pony that Bob was a great person when he was not drunk. Cherry is faced with the fact that Bob was a cruel person to the greasers, and Johnny acted in self-defense, though still cannot face Johnny. Cherry decides the best way to support the greasers and aid them is to spy on the Socs then give the greasers information. Many greasers believe her and her fellow Socs have no issues whatsoever, and Cherry explains that while they have different problems, all people have stress and strenuous situations. She shows Ponyboy that greasers and Socs are not as different as he originally pictures. Cherry also accepts people for who they are and can see that everyone can be reputable at times, even Bob, who was always heartless when dealing with greasers.
