The modern and ancient Muslim Empire is similar and different in many ways. Whether it is the rituals, attire, agriculture, or ethnicity they differ. Some traditions have been carried through centuries or even developed into bigger situations. The Muslims have had a great amount of changes.
Muslims are known to worship in buildings called Mosques. Mosques are similar to churches, but are used for Islamic believers. There were a lot of disadvantages for females, they cooked, clean, and having children. Today, most women and men both have equal responsibilities within their household unlike ancient times where it was the opposite for men they had the most power over situations and the women had to stand back and support them.
Islamic women were very conservative, because the Islamic Empire was located in warm places, people that lived in the Islamic Empire mainly dressed to hide themselves from the sun. There was no sunscreen then, so the best way to keep from getting sunburns was to keep all your skin covered up as much as possible. At that time, another thing is that they believed that god wanted them to be covered up, especially women, so that men would not see their bodies. People said that women would be better off if their bodies weren't seen.
Muslim women wear the hijab, head-covering, in fulfillment of God's decree to dress modestly. This type of modest dress has been worn by many religious women through time such as Catholic nuns, Mother Teresa, and the Virgin
The Muslim Empire began to expand vastly under the Umayyads, with the empire becoming so large many people were converting to Islam religion. The Umayyads were the second of the four major caliphates after the death of Muhammad. The Empire used many different ways to spread the Islamic civilization consisting of war, classes, and appeal. The Islamic civilization spread so strongly because of the way it allured the common man.
In Islam, their communities are called ummah. Their mosque is in the center, and cities are constructed around it. This symbolizes a life built around faith. In the Nation of Islam, their temple is also their sense of community. Though their cities are not physically around the temple, their social and spiritual lives are centered there. With school, religious services, banquets, etc. the whole community of believers sees the temple as a common ground and gathering place.
The Koran says that women must be modest and hide their, "unseen parts." Unfortunately, this verse is imprecise and can be understood from a liberal or conservative perspective. The liberal view would only require women to conceal their breast and groin. Predictably, Muslim culture understands this verse in an ultra conservative way requiring women to cloth themselves from head to toe, allowing their eyes and in rare cases not even their eyes to be visible. The Koran does not state any specific regulations that men have to hide their unseen parts.
The early Islamic empire expanded drastically. This happened due to conquering done by the Muslim people. Evidence of this being a contribution towards the expansion of the empire is on Document A. It states, “The Muslims gathered together, and the Greek army marched against them.” This shows that the Muslim army fought and that they were strong, playing a big role in the expansion of Islam.
What is Islam, and where did it come from? What is this religion all about? Islam is not the new kid on the block in regards to religion. Islam is in fact an old, ancient religion. It is not that unlike of the Christian faith either; in fact, Islamic beliefs are in the Torah, which is Jewish, and also in the bible, which is Christian. The book that Islam goes by is called the Qur’an, which is the story of the Muslim Prophet Mohammad, Who is the founder of the Islamic faith and is believed to be the last of the prophets of God. Practitioners of Islam are referred to as Muslims, and their place of worship is a mosque, which is similar to the Christians place of worship which is the church. These days Islam has become a very common and widely practiced religion throughout the world. Islam has become very misunderstood, especially within western culture. Today, many Americans and Europeans see Islam as a serious threat to their way of life. Though there have been some very serious and unfortunate events in the news that have transpired to fuel this misunderstanding,
Muslim women cover themselves by wearing Hijab. Hijab, which is also known as the veil, is the Islamic dress for women consisting the head covering, along with the body covered modestly. In Learning Islam 2, according to historians, the practice of Hijab was “part of [the] everyday dress for women in Ancient Christian and Jewish communities”(D32). Back then, many Christian and Catholic women wore a head covering as a sign of chastity. We can also see that there are references to the practice of wearing the veil in both the Old and New Testaments, “…if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is too shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or head shaved, then she should wear a veil” (I Corinthians 11:6). As you can see, the Bible gives the woman the choice of wearing the veil or have her hair cut off.
As for Muslim women, they wear a headscarf known as the hijab. Hijab is a veil that covers the head and chest. Most Muslim women at the age of puberty, wear the hijab in the presence of adult males outside of their immediate family. Most women wear abayas. Abayas are long/loose dresses. The purpose to why they dress the way they do is,hence they want to protect themselves from harm and to keep their lovely beauty for their husband. This is worn in public, yet still they can dress however they wish in their place of residency.Abayas are very similar to the graduation gowns worn when high schoolers graduate and when judges in courts judge .If successful mortals wear them ,therefore it is a sign of greatness and achievement. Some citizens find that wearing religious garments in public should not be permissible, hence it would be as if they said a human being graduating shouldn't be permissible to wear the
Just like American women, Muslim women are diverse. Not everyone wears a veil or traditional Muslim clothes, and of those who do, some of them are only wearing them because they want to. They are also not all “oppressed women forced to stay in the house.” Some of them are very important and respected people in their communities.
In arabic the muslim headscarf is called a hijab. Hijab in arabic means to cover or covering. The hijab is a scarf of some sort that is wrapped around the head and commonly covers the hair, neck, and sometimes the entire face with a burka. Hijabs are worn differently depending on wear the women wearing the headscarf is from, where they are currently, and what type of muslim they are. “The hijab — or headscarf — is a symbol of modesty and dignity.” (Nomani and Arafa). The religion that implies the muslim headscarf is Islam. Islam enforces the muslim head scarf because the headscarf covers the beauty of the women from the men and keeps the woman modest. “Scarves and veils of different colors and shapes were customary in countless cultures long before Islam came into being in the seventh century” (Brief History of the veil). Many other religions have women wear headscarves such as Orthodox Judaism and
With 1.5 billion followers worldwide, the religion of Islam is the second most popular religion over the entire globe, and follows a strict set of rules derived from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, a messenger of God, or Allah. Founded in 622 C.E. (also known as A.D.) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Islam is a strictly monotheistic religion that drew inspiration from earlier religions like Christianity and Judaism. It is divided into three different sections- the Sunni, Shi’a and Sufi sects. The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam, and is considered the unaltered word of Allah. All followers of Islam adhere to many high standards of living and daily practices meant to better their lives like The Twelve Imams, among others. Islam brings together many different aspects of peaceful and devoted living that bring together the billions of followers to one family.
Within the Middle East, the largest population of the men and women are Muslim. The Muslim religion suggests that women wear a veil or hijab, which is a head scarf that only exposes a woman’s eyes, accompanied by a burqa which is a full body cloak. The sole purpose of the clothing is to cover a woman’s feminine features from men’s eyes. The Qur’an, an Islamic scripture, supports and slightly obligates the uniform by saying that women are to be conservative, “let them wear their head covering over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments.” (Qur’an).
Islam appealed to people in variety of societies and cultures, bringing important changes as a result of contact while often merging with the local beliefs. Islam sometimes spread to other countries because of military conquest. Muslims rarely forced people to convert to their religion, often preferring to tax the other religions instead. Islam spread through more conversions as people learned what it was through trade and missionary networks. The religion was simple as it had a set of beliefs about what to do and what not to do in order to to go to heaven and to avoid eternity in hell. First, Islam gained followers in the Middle East and North Africa, slowly to gain popularity in southern Europe. Christianity on the other hand believes that Jesus is God the Son who became a human being. People receive eternal life by believing in Jesus and following his teachings. Christianity had a major impact on the West, particularly in the arts, philosophy, and society. From 750 AD to the early 1400s, Islam was gaining territory in all parts of Europe by invading the countries in uncommon ways such as creating a cultural fusion and a pocket of Muslims that are inhabiting the area. Christianity then made it’s rise in the Americas in the late 1400s with the Spanish missionaries that forced conversion on the people. Both religions have changed over the time for the people who believe in it, but have stayed central to their beliefs.
Imagine being lost in a blistering desert and finally seeing an oasis ahead. Walking through a palace where color bursts through the doors like children running to recess and the stories of Muslim heroes described right in front of ones eyes; open for the world to see with nothing to hide; this is Islam. Although one may consider Islam a monotonous religion, Islam has a unique way of socially accepting Muslims, great advancements in architecture, and distinctive artwork. Islam is a monotheistic religion that follows the scared text called the Qu'ran. To be a Muslim, one must follow The Five Pillars of Islam and show dedication to Allah (god). With the development of Islam's unique culture came a brilliant artistic language that represents the stories behind faces, dedication to Allah and the rich culture Muslims all share. Islamic architecture is based upon both religious and non-religious types of composition which can be found in Mosques, tombs, forts and palaces. Even though there are many different laws and ways of life, with communication and the same dedication to god, the Islamic culture flourishes on its diversity yet similarity.
In the Islamic faith, Muslim women are required to dress modestly by God. In the Qur’an, God speaks directly to all Muslim women and says “...guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment (The Qur’an 24:31)”. Muslim women have to wear a hijab, or a head covering, when they are in public places and when they are around men who are not close relatives. In fact, countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a mandatory dress code enforced. Muslim women in these countries have to wear a hijab and an abaya, or a full-length, loose fitting garment on top of their clothes. Although God requires Muslim women to dress modestly and Saudi Arabia and Qatar have a dress code, it is entirely their choice on what they would like to wear.
On the board on Monday morning, there were numbers one through five and they each had a religion written next to them. 1 was Hinduism, 2 was Christianity, 3 was Judaism, 4 was Buddhism, and I was lucky enough to get 5: Islam. Oh, I know so much about Islam culture and their religion, are you kidding? I don’t even know where Islam is. I’m just kidding, it’s not a country. There are many differences between Islam and the United states like our religion, clothes, and food, and becoming a Christian or a Muslim, but Islam is the second largest religion in the world, so it’s important to a lot of people. The followers of Islam are called Muslims. Becoming a Muslim is not an easy process. You must do a long list of tasks. After you become a Muslim you must do everything in your power to try to have a good Muslim lifestyle.
