I am still an undergraduate student, so pursuing a PhD seems very far in the future, but you are correct that I may continue with this author in the future. "Clarinda" is only known for writing this one poem. Since the poets name was not included with the text, there is no way to tell what poems were also penned by her, but she makes references to several poets and texts in her poem that I would love to study. The exact idea on the American identity differs from each person. In Okita's poem, "Response to Order 9066," and in Cisneros's short story, "Mericans," they both touch on their own ideas on what makes an American. The poem tells of a young Japanese girl's experience as an American before and after Order 9066. It describes how the girl and her friend's relationship broke due to the negative views on Japanese-Americans soon after the order. In the short story, a young Mexican girl doe not enjoy or embrace her own culture and would rather do activities other Americans do for fun. Later in the the story, the girl and her siblings surprise an American photographer that they could speak English soon declaring that they are "Merican." When I first watched the video “Strange Fruit” I found it nothing short of gruesome. Set in modern time, the play Haiku written by Kate Snodgrass is a thirty-minute drama with themes of unconditional love and deception, in the play Haiku, the audience looks on the life of a mother and her two daughters. In the play, the mother, Nell, is described as a woman in her 50’s who has been taking care of her daughter Louise, who is in 20’s and has some form of autism (possibly Tourette’s). During her time taking care of Louise, Nell discovers that sometimes Louise is more present, and when so, she is able to communicate with Nell by reciting haikus. Some people are born into this world without as many chances to get a better position in life. This can affect the people born into a lower class for the entirety of their life. In the poem “Saturday’s Child,” Countee Cullen uses imagery, personification, and similes to suggest the differences between people that are born into poverty and those that are born into an upper class part of society. Throughout this poem Cullen speaks about how the different social classes affect people; he does this with a pessimistic tone throughout the entirety of the poem.

Being a teacher, he creates a piece of literature, where he considers the answers given by a teacher on one and the same question asked by a student, who frequently misses a class. The speakers immediately place the reader in the appropriate setting, where the actions of a poem take place – a regular classroom. The critics from Plato to Shklovsky might all treat the poem differently. Plato makes the feeling artist important. He addresses authenticity in a work of art, otherwise artist not having experienced what he writes about, would be a liar. However, Shlovsky, the one who introduce the term of defamiliarization sees art for innovation, in language as well as form, and seeks to bring poetry into the realm of science and emphasizes technique. He wants poetry to shock the readers into true perception. Plath has managed to do that.
