Part B – Short Question Section 1. Who is the target audience and how do you know this? Use evidence to support your opinion. The target audience for the song ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry is young females. The song’s genre is pop, which appeals to young audiences (children to young adults) and is completely free of inappropriate language/swearing. It doesn’t contain any mature themes and the lyrics are simple and easy to understand. The song is most likely aimed at females because it tells them to be strong and uses similes such as ‘Now I’m floating like a butterfly,’ which is stereotypically a feminine animal. The singer, Katy Perry, is known to be a role model for many girls and the song in general sounds feminine with high notes and a catchy pop tune. However, different ages may think of the song differently. Children are able to listen to a catchy tune about roaring and animals whereas teenagers and young adults can understand the meaning behind the lyrics and maybe even relate to it. In summary, ‘Roar’ is aimed at young female audiences from the ages 5-20, but can be enjoyed by anybody for different reasons. 2. What rhythm (beat/pace) does your song have? Pick a line/verse which illustrates this rhythm well. The song ‘Roar’ has a steady but upbeat rhythm. It goes faster in the verses and slower in the chorus, as the lyrics are sung faster in the verses while the notes are held in the chorus. This works in the song’s favour because it makes the chorus easy to understand and memorise while more content can be fit into the verses. The song is about standing up to people instead of letting them have power over you and so while the verses tell the story, the song builds up to a powerful chorus. A part of the song with a distinct rhythm is; ‘I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire ‘Cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar Louder, louder than a
The verses each deliver a message of equality and the chorus is repeated with the intention of the audience considering their input towards reconciliation. The chorus is repeated 3 times, which is usually done to reinforce the central idea within a song. There are two separate verses, one that starts with the words “black fella white fella” and the other, which starts with “all the people of different races”. This format is repeated to help emphasise the idea that equality is important, regardless of your skin colour. The text structure is ordered in a way that tells a story about equal opportunity, and the way it is formatted is important in communicating this
The simplicity of the lyrics allows for the audience to completely understand each word, which speak directly to their emotions causing a feeling of personal connection between the song and the listeners. For example, the song starts
In the song, Humble and Kind, written by Lori Mckenna and performed by Tim McGraw, the speaker creates a tone of comfort to draw the audience into really understand what he is trying to say. The speaker’s purpose is for his audience to have high moral values. The speaker creates a mood of comfort intended for everyone in the world to have high moral values.
My personal choice memoir was The World is Moving Around Me by Dany Laferrière, it was a memoir about the Haiti earthquake. Throughout the memoir Laferrière conveys not only his emotions, but his peers. His choice of words and phrases made this novel not only about the Haiti earthquake, but the country of Haiti and its people. His fixed descriptions show this event didn’t only move him physically, but mentally. Lastly, Laferrières connection to the people out side of Haiti, specifically the United States is key to show the world wide impact.
Thousands of years ago, our ancestors were focused on surviving. Whether that meant from a horrible disease, a lion, or starvation. In today’s world, we happily do not have to worry about those things. We thank modern medicine, separation of dangerous wildlife from our homes, and grocery stores one every corner stocked to the brim. Many things have changed since then, but one thing that has existed since the existence of animals, stress. “Stress can lead to sadness or depression”, and “irritability or anger” (Mayo Clinic). Often people who can not handle stress very well, create a more negative lens of the world. Many of these people express their feelings or emotions through physical activities, and some express it through creating or listening to music. Float On is a song by Modest Mouse, expressing a point to not worrying too much about the negative. It is for people who take life very seriously or are
Objectification of women and misogyny is a common trend in song lyrics, but it is often socially accepted and further perpetuated. Finding a song in which the roles are reversed and a woman depicts a man as a sex object is incredibly difficult because when women try to break norms in the music industry, they are often criticized. In “Blah Blah Blah” by Kesha, she reverses the typical gender roles in song lyrics by objectifying men. Kesha has her own struggles within the male-dominated music industry because her producer sexually abused her and trapped her into a record deal. However, Kesha lost her court case, which illuminates gender issues within the music industry and the larger society. In 2010 when Kesha’s songs were popular, people weren’t aware of her battle with her producer. Instead, her lyrics classified her as more of a party figure and people even saw her as “trashy.” This song
Life passes by before you know it. Everyone is born into this world, lives their life, and passes on. Time moves so quickly that many people don’t stop and appreciate what they have. In Tim McGraw’s “My Little Girl”, he focuses on the emotional aspect of a father watching his daughter grow up and appreciating that time. The bond between a child and their parents is one of the most important gifts that God can offer, but most of the time people neglect it. Although, during memorable events such as graduations, weddings, births, etc. families are able to come together and make memories. The song “My Little Girl” speaks for every father and what he thinks during special events in his daughter's life. Through this song it creates
“Ladies First” is a feminist hip hop song by Queen Latifah. In the beginning, it says, “Let me state the position, ladies first, yes? Yes,” it seems like Latifah is trying to put women above men. She also says that “Believe me when I say being a woman is great,” this line proves that Latifah is a feminist, and this song is a feminist song. Latifah is demanding equal rights for women. She reminds the listener that women have a power too. Latifah showed the strength of African-American women in history. She intends to further the Civil Rights movement. Her message is that we have come a long way, yet we have a long way to go in terms of discrimination and sexism. In addition, she argues against negative stereotypes. Latifah showed us African-
I decided to expand on my Week 5 Post All About That Bass. Our assignment for that week was to analyze Meghan Trainor’s song All About That Bass and to give our opinion on what message we believe the song lyrics and video provided the public with. The second part of our assignment also involved watching “It’s Not About the Nail” and the Dave Barry article that addressed stereotypes about gender and what affect they might have on individuals.
The song I chose is called “Before He Cheats”. It was composed by Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins, and it was performed by Carrie Underwood. It is about when a guy cheats on Carrie Underwood so she demolishes his truck. I chose this song because it is hilarious and I like it. It also has a lot of imagery.
The song I picked for this homework assignment is called Runaway Love by Ludacris and Mary J. Blige. The song is describing the hardships of three young girls and their struggle to survive. Finally, the girls are fed up with the lives they are forced to live and decide to pack up their things and run away. I think this song can relate to many aspects of sociology that we have learned in class. Some examples shown through the song are poverty, education, healthcare, marriage and family. All three girls’ different stories and struggles they face.
All around the word there have been many cases of bullying, some that were prevented and some that ended in a tragedy such as death. The song “Mean,” by Taylor Swift is effective in using metaphor, similes, and symbolism to promote the prevention of bullying by letting everyone know to never let anyone push you around and to always stand up for your self. This song was written because, Taylor swift herself was bullied by Bob Lefsetz, a critic who heard her song, "did Taylor Swift kill her career overnight?…Taylor 's too young and dumb to understand the mistake she made.” This are the types of comments that can cause a person to feel worthless and untalented. We can see that no matter what age you are there’s always the possibility of getting
The song that I choose to do this assignment on is Fight the Power by Public Enemy. Fight the Power was written in 1989 and quickly became a street anthem for millions of youths. It reflects with issues dealing with both the Civil Rights Movement and to remind everyone that they too have Constitutional Rights. This particular song is about empowerment but also fighting the abuse of power that is given to the law enforcement agencies. It gave citizens of the U.S a more modern outlook on the many struggles that not only the African American community is up against but the other minority groups as well. The song’s message was eventually supposed to bring people together and make the world a better place, even though some teens saw it as a way
It seems to be stated as if it was a strong song to lure in young men to fight
The lyrics of music play an important part of interpreting the meaning of the song. The roles which women have been allowed by the society to embody have changed drastically. Women may question their roles because of what they see portrayed by popular culture or media. Change in female’s identity can be seen in how women are viewed or how they portray themselves in popular culture specifically through music. In general, music continues to...
