All around the word there have been many cases of bullying, some that were prevented and some that ended in a tragedy such as death. The song “Mean,” by Taylor Swift is effective in using metaphor, similes, and symbolism to promote the prevention of bullying by letting everyone know to never let anyone push you around and to always stand up for your self. The way Taylor Swift is promoting the prevention of bullying, and protesting for social change is very effective, because through her usage of similes in her song’s lyrics, and how she gives a more detail picture with her video where she connects with does who are victims of bullies. “You, with your words like knives/ And swords and weapons that you use against me/ You have knocked me off my feet again/ Got me feeling like a nothing…” This is a way of connecting with her viewers because its a clear picture of how bullies continue with the same routine being judgmental, and making their “prey” sad, disappointed of themselves, and fell like a nothing. “Physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school. Verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant.” This quote helps to understand the idea that swift is trying to give to society and to convince that we need to change and help decrease bullying and decrease the drop out rate. Taylor Swift also makes the statement of “Someday I’ll be living in a big ole city/ and all you’re ever gonna be is mean…” in her song because she wants to emphasize that bullies wont make it to be anything else than bullies and that the weaker man is going to have a great life and become a stronger man. Britt Nicole was going through some difficult times in her life when she was seven years old. Her parents were going through a divorce and that made a huge impact in her life. At one moment she remembered running up to her room with tears in her eyes and opening her Precious Moments Bible. She grew up hearing her grandpa reach about Jesus and she needed Him more than ever and to rescue her in the moment. After crying out to Him she felt His presence fill her room. Growing up, my dad controlled the radio almost always, and his choice was the local country station. This lead to hearing my fair share of Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, and Martina McBride. They often sung about beer, front porches and Jesus, and none of that really resonated with me.I never truly hated the music, it was absolutely inoffensive listening, but very few songs struck a chord with me. That is until I heard the Dixie Chicks. They made beautiful use of harmony, melody, instrumentation, emotion and storytelling that worked together beautifully.
Bullying has become a major problem facing the United States today. The American Psychological Association reports that roughly 40% to 80% of children are involved in bullying on some level during their time in school. (APA, 2014) The magnitude of the problem can be observed in the statistics. In the United States, a total of 4,080,879 children between the ages of five and 18 have been the victims of bullying compared to 3,892,199 who have reported that they have engaged in bullying someone else. Additionally, 851,755 said that they have been both the victim and the bully. Bullying is something that is present in all stages of life. Whether it is pulling someone’s hair, beating someone up, cyberbullying, slander, workplace harassment, or domestic abuse, it is bullying. Bullying occurs in schools, workplaces, in homes, on playgrounds, in the military, and in nursing homes. The documentary Bully sheds light on the bullying that occurs in schools across America. Bully takes us inside the lives of two families who lost their child due to suicide from bullying and profiles three kids who are still toughing it out. There are many factors that feed into the production of creating bullies, but the underlying cause beneath all these factors is the yearning for uniformity.
The word “bullying” can be defined as the use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force him or her to do what one wants. In the novel Nineteen Minutes, written by Jodi Picoult, the high school students prove the definition to be true. The forms and effects of bullying have no real limit, but are always going to be negative. Children, or even adults being bullied is extremely common, and can often get out of hand. A lot of the times there nothing is done to prevent bullying, which is a huge mistake that should be corrected as soon as it could be. Through the extremely emotion filled novel, Nineteen Minutes, Jodi Picoult goes deep into the face of a small town to find out what it means to be truly different in society. Jodi Picoult uses the social issue of teenage bullying to create a realistic story about the effects of verbal and physical abuse, leading to a tragedy for society. This novel is a great example of how bullying no only affects the people who are involved, but many others as well. Bullying in teenage children not only has an effect on themselves and their peers, but on society as whole.
Even though I work in a school district where we are expected to watch videos on bullying annually, this series was eye opening to the real problem of bullying. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development three out of ten children are a bully, victim, or both. Unfortunately, many artists don’t ever get to sell out any venue bigger than their local one. The Staple Center has a long list of iconic performers and even more iconic moments. Built in 1999, every year it has an average of 250 events with over 4 million audience members. With so many different events, the marketing and promotion team never fails to have an audience show up. In the last nine years, Taylor Swift has sold out the Staples Center sixteen times and is currently the only artist to do that accomplishment. In today’s society, we all need just a little push and that may come from parents, friends, or bullies. This push is necessary in order to mentally prepare children and teenagers alike for the world which is full of mean and disrespectful people. This world has no place for those who have a weak mind or cannot muster up the strength to assert their will. When I say that people need a push, I do not necessarily mean a positive one. When people think of bullying in a modern context they think of a group of children surrounding a single child throwing insult after insult while getting physically abused. Once people see this image in their mind they think of it as nothing but negativity and fail to see it in a positive light and that is the simple fact that getting bullied is merely a form of constructive criticism which is necessary evil in terms of building character.
When someone first thinks of bullying, their perception of the bully may be someone who chooses to be mean or cruel to another due to their own low self-esteem. This concept however is one that may not be true at all.
