Executive Summary.
John Hopkins Hospital was founded by John Hopkins a philanthropist and a Quaker by faith in 1867 and endowed in 1873. He dedicated his life and finances approximately $7,000,000 in cash to building a teaching hospital and a university named after him with designations of uniting functions of patient care with education and research. The John Hopkins hospital was officially opened on May 7, 1889. Before Mr. Hopkins died in 1973, he had committed himself to the principle of “united we stand and divided we fall” and selected board of trustees for the hospital and the university whom he entrusted with tasks and responsibilities to carry out his vision. On March 10, 1873, he put in black and white that the hospital must provide for “the indigent sick of the city of Baltimore without regard to sex, age, or color who may need surgical or medical treatment”. In his letter he also specified that the school of nursing and medicine must be established in conjunction with the hospital. is a teaching hospital and a Federally Qualified Health Center. There is evidence of C.C.H. being a teaching hospital right from the beginning of the book. The book starts with Dr. Ansell just finishing his time in medical school at Syracuse and him and his friends look to get placed in a hospital for residency. They decided to choose C.C.H. from the beginning for they felt it was the right choice and that this hospital needed change. Throughout Dr. Ansell’s residency many tough challenges faced him for he realized that he had to learn many things by himself. When facing all the hard challenges none was as inspiring to Dr. Ansell as the one he faced when he was seeing one of his first ever patients who refused care from him because he was a “little white boy” who didn’t look the part of the doctor. Dr. Ansell stated that “If I did one thing during my time here, it would be to learn to be the best possible doctor for my patients”. The teaching hospital that C.C.H. was is something that inspired many doctors and it really opened eyes for many doctors to really love their profession and teach them to become the best possible doctor, for it was not an easy hospital to learn

The cost of Medical equipment plays a significant role in the delivery of health care. The clinical engineering at Victoria Hospital is an important branch of the hospital team management that are working to strategies ways to improve quality of service and lower cost repairs of equipments. The team members from Biomedical and maintenance engineering’s roles are to ensure utilization of quality equipments such as endoscope and minimize length of repair time. All these issues are a major influence in the hospital’s project cost. For example, Victory hospital, which is located in Canada, is in the process of evaluating different options to decrease cost of its endoscope repair. This equipment is use in the endoscopy department for gastroenterological and surgical procedures. In 1993, 2,500 cases where approximately performed and extensive maintenance of the equipment where needed before and after each of those cases. Despite the appropriate care of the scope, repair requirement where still needed. The total cost of repair that year was $60,000 and the repair services where done by an original equipment manufacturers in Ontario.

While the concept of the profession began in the 17th century, our paper will focus more on the contemporary American history starting in the 1940s. Dr. Amos Johnson, a founder of the American Board of Family Practice, hired a hospital orderly named Henry Treadwell to assist in the daily activities of his office. Dr. Johnson’s practice in Garland, North Carolina, initiated the spread of the physician assistant model across the state. Dr. Eugene Stead and his general medicine residents at Duke University took interest in this idea. In 1942, due to the lack of adequate medical care during World War II, Dr. Stead created a three year medical doctorate fast-track program. This sparked the idea that perhaps one day he could implement a similar program to alleviate the physician shortage in the United States.
The University of California – San Francisco Medical Center is one the best hospitals in the country. In 2010 the hospital was the seventh best hospital out of 100’s of others. During the early 1900’s there was a deadly disease outbreak that had no cure. They called it “white death.” The scientific term was tuberculosis. The disease was terribly contagious and had claimed several lives so far. In 1900 Louisville, Kentucky had one of the highest death rates from this horrible disease. Due to the high numbers of people that were infected with this disease, the state of Kentucky built a special hospital that would specialize in the treatment of tuberculosis. The hospital was small and not enough rooms to house all the people were becoming ill. Eventually a bigger hospital was built. It was a state of the art hospital for our time. Big enough to hold and treat 400 patients. It also had housing for nurses, doctors and staff on the grounds. Not enough was known about this disease, except that it was very contagious. Anyone that came in contact with someone that was ill had to be isolated and treated. So far the only treatments that did seem to show minimal results were nutritional food, sunlight and fresh air.
