The book which I have chosen is County by David A. Ansell, M.D., MPH. This book entails the story of Dr. Ansell and his journey of becoming a doctor from the time he starts his residency to the end of his career at one of the nation's most controversial hospitals. The name of this hospital was Cook County Hospital (C.C.H.), this hospital no longer exists and now it is called John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Dr. Ansell’s journey was an impactful one because he was a first hand witness to the struggles the hospital faced in everyday life and how much change had to be done to better the hospital. C.C.H. was a public hospital and people without health insurance were able to get treatment at this hospital but there was a price one had to pay, People had to wait hours to see a doctor and this possibly could be life threatening to the patient. This is the struggle one has to deal with being uninsured. More than that the hospital was filled with overcrowded rooms, inefficient doctors, and even the politics that ran the hospital were controversial. Throughout the book though Dr. Ansell talks about different health care providers who despite working in a corrupt hospital that is basically broken they were dedicated to fixing C.C.H. and loved working there. …show more content…
In Professor’s Hanlon’s class we discussed about many the factors that County entails in relation to the class, for example C.C.H.
is a teaching hospital and a Federally Qualified Health Center. There is evidence of C.C.H. being a teaching hospital right from the beginning of the book. The book starts with Dr. Ansell just finishing his time in medical school at Syracuse and him and his friends look to get placed in a hospital for residency. They decided to choose C.C.H. from the beginning for they felt it was the right choice and that this hospital needed change. Throughout Dr. Ansell’s residency many tough challenges faced him for he realized that he had to learn many things by himself. When facing all the hard challenges none was as inspiring to Dr. Ansell as the one he faced when he was seeing one of his first ever patients who refused care from him because he was a “little white boy” who didn’t look the part of the doctor. Dr. Ansell stated that “If I did one thing during my time here, it would be to learn to be the best possible doctor for my patients”. The teaching hospital that C.C.H. was is something that inspired many doctors and it really opened eyes for many doctors to really love their profession and teach them to become the best possible doctor, for it was not an easy hospital to learn
at. Since this hospital was a public free care hospital it was categorized under as a Federally Qualified Health Center so it saw its patients regardless of financial status, and this book focused on how patients with low socioeconomic status were basically dumped into Cook County Hospital. There was also a struggle politically with funding this hospital. Funding situations are seen throughout the book, insufficient funding lets many things go wrong. Dr. Ansell talks about how at C.C.H. they would have no funding and would struggle because the hospital was old and out of date. For example the hospital had no back up generator so if the power went out it would be life threatening for the people who were on ventilators. This would mean these people couldn’t breathe so they were in trouble, and the doctors would have to perform cpr and try to keep their patients alive.
War. Author Michael Shaara does an excellent job of showing the bravery and valor of
...and his vision in successfully transforming the medical center to a tertiary care facility. However, in 2008 under Ron Henderson, the medical center expenses began to skyrocket and revenues failed to keep up. Also, a hospital census indicated that, on average, Medicare patients consisted of 58% and Medicaid patients consisted of 18% which caused the medical center to suffer from reductions in reimbursements. Although noted by solid evidence that utilization was experiencing a steep decline, Mr. Henderson added 127 new positions to the medical center. In 2009, Mr. Henderson was fired after the board of trustees realized that this financial bind of an $8.6 million deficit was caused by Mr. Henderson. In order for the new CEO, Richard Reynolds, to succeed at his new job title, he must create a benchmarking process adopting certain goals to remain a worthy competitor.
The book that I chose to do is Street Pharm by Allison van Diepen, the book has 297 pages, the reason I chose this book is personally I am tired novels taking place years before I am born. This novel pertains to urban problems and one kids' attempt to survive in the pressures of present day Brooklyn. Within the novel, there are several subplots, one being his love interest, Alyse, and Ty's fight to stay in school. As well as, his fight not to lose money or control of his territory. It is interesting to watch this young man, balance these things in his life and not let them interfere with each other.
Atul Gawande writes an outstanding book about surgery that displays the true color of surgery. By telling stories of all the flaws he saw and experiences in his own year as a surgical resident. Atul vividly demonstrates this by the use of annotations to show that he know what he is actually saying and to make the reader understand his thoughts as a resident. He also uses through the book repetition to make his readers have the same rush doctors feel while treating a patient. By doing this the reader is able to understand the difficulty of being a surgeon and the truth behind
“Hospitals today are growing into mighty edifices in brick, stone, glass and marble. Many of them maintain large staffs, they use the best equipment that science can devise, they utilize the most modern methods in devoting themselves to the noblest purpose of man, that of helping’s one’s stricken brother. But they do all this on a business basis, submitting invoices for services rendered.”
The hospital in this novel is a scaled down version of the outside world and is equally corrupt. A system with strict policies is created forcing patients to conform to its standards, stifling individuality. The narrator is a mute patient named Chief Bromden, who refers to the hospital as the ?Combine? because it?s mechanized to create uniformity among the patients. Chief believes the Combine?s purpose is to fix the ?impurities? by transforming them into identical and perfect packages. The ones who are unable to conform to the rigid norms must remain in the Combine, patients are only allowed to return to society when they are completely ?fixed up and new? (40). Nurse Ratched, the antagonist, is in charg...
This book (the last lecture), is filled with awe-inspiring circumstances. Of course life can come with some hurdles or challenges, but the tendency for Randy to handle his medical situation with phenomenal valor, is an outstanding qualities that shows leadership and focus on what matters to him, his family, and vision before he moved on to the next realm.
This book definitely changed my perception on becoming a care provider. As I care provider I will get consent from every patient before doing anything.
Question Quote "I doubt that these experiences are unique to the hospitals or the medical school at which I have thus far trained. I expect that they pervade health care systems throughout the country. I give credit to my medical school for teaching me to be critical of the culture of medicine, apply interdisciplinary perspectives to clinical quandaries, and reflect on my experiences." (Brooks KC. 2015.)
The University of California – San Francisco Medical Center is one the best hospitals in the country. In 2010 the hospital was the seventh best hospital out of 100’s of others. How does a hospital reach this level of success? A hospital such as UCSF they have to be willing and able to find better and new ways to approach the care for their patients. Superb patient care is only one of the reasons why UCSF is one of the best. The innovative research and the extensive education in the Science of Health at their medical school are more reasons. UCSF Medical Center has been known to specialize in many of areas of medicine but there are areas they are most popular for. They also have many strategic plans that are already being putting in affect to better their hospital reputation and for the coming years.

My book is The Natural written by Bernard Malamud. It is a great fiction sport novel. I would give this book 5 stars. Some will say it’s the best novel ever written about baseball I would agree. I'm proud I chose this book because baseball is my favorite sport there's nothing like being on that field with your friends competing.
Beginning in 2007, two reporters from the Chicago Tribune, David Kidwell and Alex Richards, launched an investigation of what seemed to be the wrongful citation of thousands of Chicagoland drivers whom were ticked by robotic cameras over a nine year period of time. Many of these tickets were dealt during a camera spike, in which case cameras that would usually give a lower number of tickets would dramatically increase the amount of tickets given in a short period of time. The Tribune gathered useful input from numerous chicagoland citizens, city officials, and traffic safety experts while their research was conducted. While reading these three red light articles, a media consumer must analyze the the reliability and credibility of the source
About a year ago, while searching for a new book to read, I came across the book Complications at the library. Since I am considering becoming a physician, I picked it up and started reading. Needless to say, I couldn’t put it down. The way he explained his training as a surgeon and the moments he has experienced have intrigued me. In the little free time I had, I finished reading the three other books he has written. They
