The Natural
My book is The Natural written by Bernard Malamud. It is a great fiction sport novel. I would give this book 5 stars. Some will say it’s the best novel ever written about baseball I would agree. I'm proud I chose this book because baseball is my favorite sport there's nothing like being on that field with your friends competing.

The main character in the book The Batboy by Mike Lupica is Brian Dudley. Brian tries to solve a big problem with one of the players on the Detroit Tigers, Hank Bishop. Brian knows more about baseball than most MLB players. He tries to get Hank Bishop to be a good hitter again. Hank started going through a slump and almost nobody believed in him. He struck out or grounded out almost every time. Brian helped him get out of his slump and get to his 500 home runs. Brian had three big character traits, nervous, respectful, and helpful. His character traits affected him by making him who he is and making him a great person. Nervous changed him because he needed to tell Hank what was wrong with his swing but he waited a long time.

Hutch, the main character of The Big Field, has played baseball all of his life. He has always played shortstop, the same position that his father dreamed of playing as a professional. “Hutch, had always thought of himself as the captain of any infield he’d ever been a part of” (Lupica 1). Hutch finds himself being demoted to second base because there is another player, Darryl, on his new team that is expected to go pro and also plays shortstop. Hutch struggles because he does not want to play second base and his father does not support him because he does not want baseball to break Hutch’s dreams like it did his own. Hutch is betrayed by his father and Darryl when he finds them practicing together. Hutch has to learn to adjust and eventually becomes friends with Darryl, the up and coming shortstop. He understands that if he wants to win, then he needs to work together with Darryl. His father also comes around and finally gives Hutch his approval. Students should read this book in a high school English classroom because it demonstrates how relationships can be difficult, but teamwork can help to solve many issues.
Million Dollar Arm by J.B. Bernstein. The genre is non-fiction. J.B. not only is the author but one of the main characters in the book. J.B. is a sports agent, he has represented some of the biggest clients in the sports industry including Barry Bonds and other great athletes. One he was looking for something different he was watching TV at three in the morning when he was flipping channels and saw a cricket game being played in India the speed that the players were throwing the ball was in the high eighties. That sparked an idea to go to India and look for the next best MlB pitcher. This could ruin his career but this also could make him a star.
Henry starts out as a low-lying baseball player and through the progression of his story, becomes a highly acclaimed player. By Henry’s “junior year, he was the starting varsity shortstop”, an impressive accomplishment that landed him rave attention from scouts of professional baseball (9). No matter how many games he played, when asked “how many errors he’d made”, he would always reply with “zero”, denoting his strive to the achievement of pure perfection and nothing less (9). Although Henry’s pursuit of perfection did him well in the end, as he became a top prospect for the MLB, it did so at the cost of losing his human sanity when faced with specific moments of failure. Instances such as accidentally striking Owen denote a moment of failure, as well as when Henry breaks down and is unable to continue with said pursuit of perfection. In addition, Henry always believed in maintaining both his pursuit of perfection as well as his own self-image of perfection. When Pella asks Henry, “So, what’s it like to be the best?”, this inflates Henry’s ego and encourages him to continue his pursuit of perfection (209). To this, he responds that you only notice that you are the best “when you screw up”, a seemingly pretentious response that only adds fuel to the ambition and quest for excellence through
The main character is Brain Dudley who is a huge baseball fan he knows a lot of stats about a lot of players. Hank Bishop is a baseball player that is Brain’s idol. Cole Dudley is Brian's dad who was a MLB pitcher that played for a couple of teams before leaving Brain and his mom in Detroit to go coach baseball in the Japan League. In his book A Discourse on Inequality, Jean- Jacques Rousseau turns to the state of nature in search of the real “essence” of man. What made humans to be humans? Rousseau is trying to determine the prodigious events, such as the acquisition of knowledge and errors, the mutations that took place in the constitution of the body, and the constant impact of the passions that eventually led to the separation of man between the state of nature and society (67). He describes how as time change, humanity change as well. He figures that if by first looking into the origin of man, it can lead to the “source of inequality among men” and the unnatural ways man has evolved to become (67).
The Natural written by Bernard Malamud was a very well written book. I really am not a big fan of baseball but I did enjoy this novel. This book is about never giving up no matter how bad the situations gets. Roy Hobbs wanted to be the best baseball player that ever lived, who broke all the records, and when he went walking down the street he wanted people to say, “Hey that’s Roy Hobbs, the greatest player of all times.” He would have been excellent and could have played baseball for many years, but someone didn’t want that. He was shot and it injured him terribly. Hobbs finally made it back and was found by a scout and was sent to play for the worst team in the league. I like how Hobbs never gives up. He goes up against the corrupters, the seducers, and the glory destroyers. No one wanted to let Hobbs play because he was old, they thought he should be at the age to retire not to just begin. This book goes to show that you can do anything if you set your mind to it and if you want it bad enough. Hobbs proved everyone wrong. He was worst possible thing happened, he met a girl. He started getting distracted and it a effected his game. Hobbs let a woman mess with his head. When Hobbs would go up to bat, he usually hit a home run but when he met this woman, he started striking out. I guess you could say that she was bad luck. Well, he eventually made is mind get cleared and was back to his old self. Another reason why I liked this novel is because it kind of gives a l...
The Great Depression struck out many during its run in the 20th century. From 1929-1939, unemployment struck one in every four people. And additional events such as the Dust Bowl, forced many farmers to the city looking for work, doing anything they could to obtain what little money they could. From the twenty-five cent, the twenty cent, and the fifteen cent worker, anything was worth it for money. And with anyone doing anything in order to get money, corruption was high, as well as the greed for said money. These aspects, along with the national pastime of baseball are all incorporated in Bernard Malamud's novel, The Natural.
Many people don't understand the point in playing baseball. Why would someone swing a stick, hit a ball, and try to get back to where they started before the ball returns? What pleasure is there in that? Why not participate in a sport like wrestling or track where there is an obvious level of individual improvement and therefore pleasure. Well, I play baseball because of the love I have for the sport, and because of the feeling that overwhelms me every time I walk onto a baseball field. When I walk onto a field I am given the desire to better myself not only as an athlete, but also as a person. The thoughts and feelings I get drive me to work hard towards my goals and to be a better person. The most relevant example of these feelings is when I stepped on the field at Runyon Complex in Pueblo, Colorado during our high school state playoffs in 2003. This baseball field will always be an important place to me.
Important aspects of naturalism are the ideas that people are essentially animals responding to their basic urges without rational thought, and the insignificance of man to others and nature. In The Jungle, Sinclair portrays Jurgis as a man slowly changing into animal as well as a man whose actions are irrelevant to the rest of the corrupt capitalist world of Chicago in order to show the reader the naturalist ideas of the struggles between man and society.
"He was like a hunter stalking a bear, a whale, or maybe the sight of a single fleeing star the way he went after that ball (Malamud, 162)." Since he is young, Roy Hobbs has great ability and amazing talent in baseball. However, just like a tragic hero in Greek myth, those ones who fight for their honor, but fail because of their hubris or the desire of being such immortal and an aspects of not accepting the truth and reality, Roy Hobbs' hubris, ambition and a desire for fame and his fortune really tell that he is a tragic hero.
Remember when it was published that Pluto is no longer considered as a planet? I remember that our physics teacher was really angry about the fact that in space agency discarded the fact that was known and generally accepted by the general public. In my essay I will discuss how the “old” knowledge was affected when there were new aspects of particular knowledge discovered. I will focus on two areas of knowledge: The natural sciences and the arts and I will ask myself: To what extend can new knowledge contributes to abundance of old, generally recognised facts?
Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth by Robert Burleigh is a great story for demonstrating the importance of sentence fluency. This text uses sentences of different lengths to convey feeling. There are a variety of great passages to choose from to show students the many different types of sentence structure used in this text and how they affect the story.
