3.1 Introduction of XYZ Company

3.1.1 Organization Foundation and Structure
XYZ Company was incorporated in 1970 as a limited company. It engaged in safety glass business. The company is located in Samutsakorn province, Thailand. It is one of the leading manufacturers of safety glass and energy-saving glass in Thailand. It has engaged in the business and has long experience and extensive expertise in the production and the marketing of producing safety glass, interior decoration glass and glass for other industrial uses both domestically and internationally for over 40 years. Besides, the company understands well the demands of customers, and has always been developing, researching and improving the design and quality of its products while maintaining the international standards quality under the management of a professional management team and seasoned technical staff in glass design and manufacturing, using computer system and modern technology. The products’ quality is guaranteed by international standards, ISO 9001:2008, TS 16949 (technical specification) and many more.
As of 31 December 2012, it has 1,044 workers, in which 80% are Thai, 20% are non-Thai workers. The management of XYZ Company is divided into 3 main work lines: Marketing and Sales, Factory and Production, Administration and Finance. The organization chart can be illustrated in Figure 6 as followed:

4) Method: Some steps in production process are unnecessary. Although it yields better quality control of the products, it adds too much extra cost into the production cost, which eventually lowers the profitability of the company. In addition, frequent change in working method also result in confusion and need of time to be familiar with the new method.
5) Environment: the working conditions such as place and weather also affected the productivity. In the factory, the temperature near the machine is very high, in addition, Thailand’s weather is rather hot, which might lead to stress during work. Besides, the terrible relationship between workers and their bosses also created the unpleasant working environment, which eventually affects the workers’ efficiency.
NVE Corporation was founded in 1989 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Originally called Nonvolatile Electronics, the company changed its name to NVE Corporation after going public on the Nasdaq stock exchange in 2000; their ticker symbol is NVEC. The word “nonvolatile” refers to memory that retains information after a power source has been removed. Since their founding, NVEC has been granted over $50 million in government research contracts, especially for their research in the nonvolatile memory called MRAM or magnetoresistive random access memory. These contracts helped NVEC develop an intellectual property portfolio and accumulate over 50 patents regarding spintronic and MRAM technology. Recently the company has reduced their dependence on research contracts and has grown tremendously through product sales, averaging an increase of 25% top-line growth the past three years.
However, RLK’s competitors are downsizing and outsourcing R&D and exploiting on the cost advantages. If RLK decides to invest more money into R&D and should the new product stall on launch, they face the danger of becoming bankrupt.
The absence of appropriate motivation, fairness, and communication are recognized as the root causes of the issues at the Engstrom Auto Mirror Plant. These are the real issues that added to the decrease in efficiency and product quality. Workers who are affected in an organization might be a result of de-motivation, poor communication, and personal conflict. The presence of these components is the thing that could result in a decline of workers’ productivity, since workers feel they have no control over their work and what they produce. “The success of any Analysis Organization depends on the ability of managers to provide a motivating environment for its employees” (Osabiya, p. 63).

Secondly, from years of quality control practice the firm established a well-know quality control procedure, "the Method". It has great value to the company in that it includes detail best practices for the production procedures which guarantees and improves the quality of the products. The main problems that are affecting the company were the high level of labour turnover, below target production rates, high levels of scrap, the employees had little input in the decision making, therefore resulting in low motivation and job satisfaction, and didn't have enough feedback on there performance. Added to this was the conflict between the supervisors and employees in the production and packing areas, and the grading and payment levels wasn't satisfactory to the employees.
