After reading Who owns the Ice House, I was very moved and inspired by the ordeal the author had to go through to accomplish something in his life. The five topics I chose from Who owns the Ice house to compare to this Human Resource Management class is choice, action, knowledge, community and persistence. The first chapter in Who Owns the Ice House is all about choice. There was a quote from the author that states, “The ability to choose the way we react to our circumstances is perhaps the greatest power that we have” (Taulbert 2010). This in my opinion is a very true statement. Our choices are what define us and set us apart from other people. Action was the reason that both Uncle Cleve and Clifton were both able to accomplish something big. Uncle Cleve, dispite the challenges around him sought out a need by everyone and came up with a solution. That solution was the ice house. Cleve went against all odds and took action and became an entrepreneur, even though society said he couldn’t. Clifton did the same thing when he was in St Louis and he took initiative and applied for the position at the bank and for the position in Washington D.C. Action is what got these situations completed. Action is very important in Human Resource Management because, every action that is taken has a positive or negative effect on someone or something. There will always be people to deal with in a positive or negative way. Deciding who to deal with those situations can be the hard part. Clifton says, “It took courage to set my own path, to remain friendly and not captive to the ideas of others.” This is a good example of one of the challenges of dealing with your peers. Deciding to be a leader or a follower is a hard. In Clifton’s situation, he chose to pave his own way based off the morals and values of someone who inspired him. In most situations, these days’ peer pressure is hard to say no to. Image is everything to most people and others will pray on your pride to get you to do what they do or what society deems acceptable. I noticed merging from the group were leaders; males. According to (Banaji and Greenwald, 2013), “leader = male stereotype is generally valid,” (pg. 88). The males that were taller and more athletically built displayed confidence and direction for the group. I stood back and didn’t take the leadership role because I assumed people saw my mannerisms revealed the lack of confidence I had about myself. I eagerly listened to directions and cautiously abided by the ideas of others, so that I could have a positive impact on the group activities. I have learned that people gravitate toward leaders who show unrequited respect to those they serve. Because I believe that all people are equally human, people never have to worry about facing disrespect from me. One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
There are a lot of people that might disagree and argue with me. Some people might argue that being a leader is boring and can be embracing, why not fit in with society. However, I know from personal experience that not fitting in and being yourself can be really fun, and it can be embracing at first but you have to get over that and then its fun. Everyone was expected to know how to do their jobs and if they didn’t know how to do something they had to “figure it out”. Needless to say, mistakes were made. Of course, natural leaders emerged and became pseudo role models to a few of us but the firm never made the step to establish role model relationships for training purposes. Both inside and outside of school, I make it a personal commitment to be a kind, helpful, and respectful role model to others, and I use those character traits to be a successful leader in my community. The most effective leaders know better than to try to be someone they are not. They should always be searching for opportunities to reinvest in their strengths. Leaders need to stay true to who they are and make sure they have the right people around them. The book says those who surround themselves with similar personalities are at a disadvantage to those who are secure enough to be surrounded by people who strengths will compliment theirs.

Ms. Geis feels that to be an effective leader one must demonstrate with a high level of confidence, “even if I’m unsure of myself, I have to be ready to stand by my decision and carry it out.” Although, she also stated a competent supervisor must also be able to accept when they are wrong. Ms. Geis provides supervision for 15 direct care workers in the programs and finds “That’s a lot of different viewpoints and perspectives to sort through.” Therefore, she finds difficult people are not easy to work with.
